Milano - Sanremo 2023, one day monument, March 18

The dust has settled. Ireland have won the grand slam and MVDP has won the greatest race. All within one day. MVDP probably would have won the sprint if it came down to it, but it wouldn’t have been as flamboyant and he wouldn’t have had time for the traditional salute on the via Roma.
What a day!

But how am I supposed to know that you saying it would have been good if he had stayed in front for longer didn't mean that he at same point had been in front?

Or were you referring to Cipressa? I just don't get it...

Are you joking, or?

I'm not referring to any particular point in the race. I'm just saying that it would have been an advantage for Powless if Cort had been in contention further into the race than he was - which many expected that he would be able to, but for some reason he fell behind. That's all, that's it. EOD.

I guess Pogi and WVA did not have enough in the tank to do anything. WVA tried but was spent force.
WVA was leading the 3 through the descent from 4.6 Km to go until 2.3 Km to go, at which point the gap was still 6 seconds. Then Ganna came to the front, looked behind waiting for Pogacar to pull through, with 3 of them “working together” in the next Km, the gap went out to at least 10 seconds by the red kite (they didn’t show the chasers go through so it’s an estimate). Given how much he put into his surge to get 2nd, if he had committed fully to the chase they had a chance to catch MVDP, although the latter still would have won.

Textbook win by VDP, but one also has to have a special pair of legs on him to successfully pull off this kind of attack against a group of WVA, Pogacar and Ganna. In hindsight, on the Poggio Wellens and Pog ended up doing a perfect lead out for VDP.
I also noticed rewatching that whoever was the 3rd UAE rider in the line as Wellens was stringing out the peloton either cleverly or exhaustedly gradually let go of the wheel in front of him, automatically creating a gap to the front 8 (9?) riders, and when those behind him hesitated to close that gap it essentially eliminated everyone behind from contention, even before Pogacar launched his attack. Would be interested to know who that was and whether it was planned that way.

Trentin, I believe.

Don't get people complaining about Ganna. If he goes ITT mode on the last 3km everyone will call him a stupid donkey because he pulls superiors sprinters in WVA and Pog back to MVDP (another superior sprinter).
I think the chase was doomed because Pogacarhad invested too much on the Poggio and WVA was dead already on the Poggio and also leading the chase the whole descent.
I’m still willing to complain about him. The very second he ended up on the front with about 2.3 Km he immediately turned around and looked for Pogacar to come though. That’s his right to decide he’s set on trying to get 2nd and giving up any chance of a win. Both those of us watching and hoping the chase group might add to the drama at the finish don’t have to like his choice.

For the complaints about Group 2 dynamics, I think it didn't matter. MvdP was the strongest on the Poggio, the tailwind was huge, and he had like 6 seconds in the final 2km.

MvdP even said his legs were still great and he thought he could win the sprint even if they brought him back.
I think he would have, given they other 3 would have needed to put everything into a chase to catch him.

The total number of activities on their profile continues to go up, even if they aren't made visible. I believe at the time of CX worlds, his was at around 1200 rides, after today it's 1236.

So MVDP is just going to let Pog have the Poggio KOM?
