Yeah, that's probably him. I thought it was a Soudal rider when I rewatched the finale but it was very hard to see.

Well I don’t think either Pog or MVDP took it to their absolute limit. Going just a little bit faster entails exponentially higher risks. I believe they can but why would they? Piddles caught them but so much faster wasn’t he. Will be interesting to compare their descent with previous years.

yeah, just found a fan video (must mute!) from the descent, but it doesn't really show him clearly either. As there's no other Ag2R rider in the video, it must be Cosnefroy, though:

• +17s Kragh
• +23s Battistella, Asgreen, Trentin, C. Pedersen, Pithie
• +28s Everyone else who finished in G2

Really enjoyed that, from the Cipressa onwards. Impossible to call even to the last km. Loved seeing all the genuine bonhommie among the riders at the finish. Some great throws of he dice ... Pidcok winning would have been fun. And Ala finishing in the top 10 with a flat. Most entertaining.

Van der Poel shut all doors, first Pog on mid part Poggio, then a second time at the end of the climb and then finally Piddles in the last kilometer. It would have been Pog or Piddles otherwise…

MvdP also said in the post race interview that Philipsen told him he had great legs (but that was after Poggio and everything came together) and MvdP siad he "knew what he had to do" - i.e. reeling in Pidcock.

People saying a sprinter won... Philipsen is much more than that by now. Not comparable in any way to the run of actual sprinter wins up until Démare.

Philipsen is more of a sprinter than Degenkolb and Kristoff were back then.

Pog is an average descender. MvdP coasted down after him, not worried about the small gap and kept looking over his shoulder to see where Philipsen was. Pidcock is a good descender who could gap Pog but not MvdP.

Because Mohoric said on Wednesday in training Pogacar dropped him behind a motorbike because speed was simply so high but in the race on such low gradients, Pogacar has no drafting in his attacks but for the others Pogacar is the motorbike. So harder to force a selection.

I don't know, no explanation, just the usual Strava "morning ride" template. But it's odd that he published it days later. I wouldn't be surprised if he's now really pissed off at some of his teammates.

But you would need a smaller n to describe the number of people who are more likely to survive the Poggio than Philipsen - compared to those two.

it also doesn't really matter, as they surely didn't do it at the end of a 280km training ride.

I havent really followed the whole discussion here....

Degenkolb had interestingly enough finished 2nd in P-R 2014, before winning MSR in 2015.

Same as Philipsen. 2nd PR 2023. Now won MSR in 2024. Also 4th in Dwars last season, not particularly a sprinters race.

Degenkolb was surely more known as a sprinter guy, before his MSR and PR wins? Cleaning up Vuelta stages and so on. Unfortunately, he had his accident later on and we will never know if he could have gone on to win more monuments. Heartbreak last year for him in PR.

I think him and Philipsen has very much followed the same sort of path in their development though.

Kristoff had his best classics season so far in 2013. 8th MSR, 4th Ronde and 9th in PR. Then won MSR in 2014.

Trend for each one seems to be they each had a bit of their breakthrough in classics the year before they won it.

Was nice to just see Ala back in the hunt, though I don’t think he had the means to pull out a win.
