Moondance got a week ban for quoting scarface after the gp Quebec in 2010, because the quotes contained the f word.

Oy, Mark L, yer really cruisin' there, eh? Otter throttle back the afterburners, imo.

Some words that were once considered obscenities have entered the normal usage lexicon. Older examples are "shat", and "crap". More recent examples are "sh*t", and "suck". The f word has not made that leap. And the four letter C word has most especially not made that leap. If anything, it is perhaps deeper in the pit today than 40 years ago. "w***er" I would not know about, as it is not even on the radar in the US. In the UK or Oz it might be a different story.

Moral of the story: f is not equivalent to sh*t. Comparisons are, therefore, de facto exaggerations.

Side note to story: the forum auto-edit feature is likely set a bit more tightly than what I've just said might indicate. An auto-editor is unable to determine context, and thus must be set tightly or it will end up being pretty useless.

Edit (for clarity): because a word has entered the normal lexicon does not make it acceptable in all situations or conversations. I am often offended by common use of the word "suck", but I've gradually grown accustomed to it. Still, I would not use it either when meeting with upper management, or in an audience with the Queen. Now, the Pope, since his business is forgiveness - I might consider it there!

Sorry, but this is all rather childish. If SB wasn't a mod you all wouldn't have taken a second look at his use of the word ****. This is grasping at straws to find something to attack him for.

Further, I fail to see how the way in which he used it is offensive in any way. If you think it's offensive then IMHO you needs some thicker skin.

He violated the rules in two ways: (1) he used a vulgar word, (2) he circumvented the censoring software of this forum to do it.

Sitting Bison has stated that it is acceptable to use the word "shit" to "demonstrate the depth" of his anger. That means we all can use vulgarity (and circumvent the censoring software to do it), when we feel a need to demonstrate the depth of our anger.

If it doesn't mean that, Eshnar, then it means that mods can say shit, but other forum members can't say shit.

Now, that's bullshit. And I'm expressing the depth of my anger.

So let me get this straight. You never, in the last, say, 2 years, never saw a normal user writing a bad word and getting away with it? Because if you mean that, then I'm rather impressed by the fact that evidently only I saw them.

There was indeed a rule about "avoiding foul language, and not circumventing the censors in order to do so" which is obviously what you're quoting, but that rule was just a relic from the past. Since I'm a mod, that is 18 months roughly, we never enforced that. And by never I mean only once Hiero2 did (he gave an infraction), and after a discussion in the mods room we overturned that. And that rule is not even in the current rules, btw.

I'm getting one vibe from you and Sitting Bison, and I'm getting a different one from Afrank. With all due respect, you mods need to get your shit together.

Oh. Sorry. I reread his post. I think you are all being consistent. I guess use of vulgarity is now acceptable in this forum if it is not done in an "offensive" way.

I can live within those rules.

We're cool.

Actually, I concur. And, imo, SB should apologize to the forum. Or at least validate and show sympathy and recognition of the quite logical objections to his exception. NOTE! I do not mean that SB should remove his "***". Let it stay. He has represented WHY he used it, and done a good job of explanation, imo. But, he would do well to recognize the logic of the opposition in this case.

WHAT!?!? You overturned one of my decisions? I am appalled! I am incensed, aggravated, irritated, ANGERED! FEAR MY ANGER OH YOU MERE MORTALS . . .

Ok - now off the ghostbusters second play - I'm not really upset. But I did find it humorous!

Esh - all - read my post about what is in the lexicon carefully. I would strongly recommend you regard it as a guideline to the border between acceptable and not-acceptable. Of course, if the mod room mutually decides to modify the details, behind my back (!)no problem. I won't sweat it. I might give you a hard time, tho, given the chance.

I don't have to put up with shit like that, if any of you want to play that card there is only going to be one result....

Are you a transparent hypocrite, or what? Can you NOT see the double standard you are postulating? Why don't you just do the decent thing and delete the vulgar word from your post? The rules ought to apply equally to everyone, shouldn't they?

The rules apply equally to all posters who are not mods, they are above that ****.

Edit: Huh, look at that I can't say ****, but sittingbull, or whatever, can say ****, and has been most of the day.

Mark, I moderate this forum to keep it moving, keep it relatively civil and relatively on track. I don't moderate (or oarticipate) torecieve the vile insults delivered to me by sockpuppet thrice time over butterhead under any circumstances.

I have said my bit, I have explained to you that it is not acceptable to swear, and that lo and behold I am not perfect.

My comment intended to get across the depth of my agitation and anger at what I received and if anyone wants to go down that path its a one way ticket to outta here....which it does quite succinctly.

Mark you have said your bit, I and others have answered. I now consider you are being intentionally obstreperous and argumentative ie trolling. Time to stop.

Is this topic over, as per mod Sitting Bison's edict, or has it been reopened, per mod Eshnar?

At most you can say I opened the topic "Hiero2 doesn't remember a pretty insignificant episode". You can discuss this if you find it interesting.
