I'll say this: as a British person who isn't particularly patriotic that 'Brits don't dope' thread is a constant source of ire for me, I am mostly offended everyt time I go in there

I keep bleeding every time I stab myself with this knife, and it's really painful.

Can you please ban all knives?

No, I don't feel like giving this behaviour a pass anymore by ignoring. It doesn't matter to you because it's not directed at you. When it is judge me then, and stop being pompous.

Jimmy, there is a simply solution if you are feeling bullied. Put the perpetrators on ignore. I did exactly this to a couple of creeps who latched on to me pretty quickly, one of whom sent me unsolicited abusive emails. Problem solved, I don't have to read their ***, nor be on the receiving end of their personality disorders (remember, its the internet: you don't have to be stable to post on it ;) )

There is another aspect to this, though, and that is that different sorts of behaviours deemed acceptable in one nation can be unacceptable in others, regardless of a shared language. Offence can be caused when none was intended. As you might see under my photo I hail from NZ, but live in the UK, via several other countries. I've been with the same Australian partner for quarter of a century, and whilst I picked up on the nuances of language pretty quickly it took him a little longer.

He caused offence to British people on numerous occasions, without realising that his behaviour was seen as crass. It took me many months to get him to understand that if he was having a friendly chat with somebody and they said something he didn't quite agree with, responding by saying "you're full of ***" wouldn't be interpreted as the friendly banter in which it was intended. His response was that the British are stuck-up. In reality, the problem wasn't the British, in whose country he lives, but his own ignorance of local manners.

It's the same all over the world. If you blow your nose in Japan you will offend. Seems strange, but true. This is an international forum and it needs to be born in mind that there is plenty of room for misunderstanding

I don't feel bullied. What I feel like is double standards are being applied. During the 2012 Giro d'Italia I referred to a group of Italian riders as a 'mob' and the clinic responded with outrage and I was warned by a moderator for 'cultural insensitivity'. However I feel like a completely different set of rules are in place for the British. I have seen some pretty monstrous things said about us and frankly I'm tired of seeing it. Yes I can put people on ignore, yes I can turn my back on the forum and walk away however I'm fed up seeing it and it being tolerated when my remark brought censure. There's a Brit on here, MartinGT, who hates Sky and think they are dirty as they come but I remember even he snapped and told people to pack it in.

And I know plenty of Aussies and Kiwis, have lived and worked in New Zealand so I know and appreciate Antipodean humour. What I wouldn't do is go onto an internet board and try to characterise them as a country full of thick convicts totally devoid of culture (as an example). Because its a stereotype, and because I'm not a tosser.

Well I have to accept what you say as I haven't been here long enough to notice a pattern. I know there are a few who like to stir the pot but as it isn't directed at me I guess I've no real right to comment. All I can say is I've dealt with the people I think are d1cks (and there are only two, everybody else seems nice enough) and I'd suggest you do the same. Its just an internet forum just like any internet forum...it only has the value you choose to give it, so if it is getting to you then cut the bits of it out that are troublesome. You don't even need to justify it to anybody.

I think its more expecting people on a moderated board to not resort to making mocking statements and use disparaging cultural stereotypes about nations or races, and expecting if they do for the moderators to something about it.

I can't believe that you demonstrate the absolute lack of cultural sensitivity by implying a British nationality! A legion of Scotsmen and women would disagree in the strongest terms! Before them, so would many Africans and Indians. When you say "Britain," you mean "empire." Nothing is more culturally demeaning than empire. You have whole nations--real nations--to apologize to!

:D

I'm not sure you can expect too much from volunteer moderators beyond reporting a post and hoping that they get the time to have a look. It isn't light-touch moderation here, it is pretty harsh, but I'd surmise that there is a concrete reason for that. I haven't seen much that is too bad beyond some subtle and some not-so subtle wind ups. The trolls are obvious but most of them are quite funny and harmless. There are a couple of unpleasant posters but it takes less than a minute to deal with them forever.

I once helped out a friend by offering to help moderate a fricking dog show forum. I don't know why, I hate dog shows. If you think this place is bad you've seen nothing. I had physical threats and actually received a solicitors letter :D This place is truly mild in comparison.

I am almost certain the person to whom you refer is just joking. Taking the piss, as they say.
That said, maybe send a pm to the person who offends you and try to work it out behind the scenes.
No need for further suspensions/bans because of misunderstandings.

Thank you for a voice of reason and understanding.

It's a person's choice to be offended, and that is usually associated with a lack of humour. A very sorry state of affairs that all the banning and rules in the world will never solve.

Not everyone who mocks the country where you were born is your enemy.
Not everyone who appears to support you is your friend.

Also: this pause between posts for posters who are clearly not bots is fvcking stvpid.
There's always the possibility to edit your own post.

It doesn't stop the pause, which is stupid.

I open threads in multiple tabs and reply via those tabs. Editing posts is only good for one purpose, and making multiple replies is not one of them.

I not sure why posters are complaining about excesses in a forum, where they can opt out off, which the sport does exceeding well in the excess department, especially doping!

Some folks need to chill or avoid the bits that upset them. It is sport, not life and death, being talked about in a forum. Get over it!

I'd have nothing to whinge about if I avoided the bits that annoy me, Benotti.

JFC even doing things in a single tab it's fcking stupid.

Send a PM.
Try to send a PM to someone else. TOO SOON.
Wait.
Send the PM.
Try to reply to a thread. TOO SOON.

Ridiculous.

Plus I think there is a bug because if you hit SUBMIT repeatedly it FUBARs completely and won't submit from that page regardless of wait time.

Stupid.

The Brits don't dope? thread was locked. Yet these threads remain open, albeit buried since they've been inactive for a while:

Colombians Considered Clean?
Are Iranians Just Taking the Piss Now?
Australian Crime Commission investigation finds widespread doping
Amnesty for Australian cyclists??
Proof of government doping program in Russia
Systematic doping of Kenyan runners
As McQuaid says : Only in Spain.
Has any Spanish athlete NOT been "exonerated" by Spain ?
The Loss of Italian & Spanish Teams = Crackdown on Doping

What's the difference? Why are these OK to remain open and just fall off the front page naturally, while the Brit thread has to be the subject of major anti-bias complaints and then closed.

As one looks through the first 5 pages of clinic threads, there are 9 locked threads. Anyone want to guess what subject matter 2/3 of these locked threads have in common?

bait

Chill..

I quite often see you posting twice in the same thread in a short period of time. Also it's annoying to read three different posts of the same user in a row. So then there's the possibility to edit your post instead of posting a new one.

But apparently you were talking about posting in different topics. Okay, you explained that and now the mods can respond. Don't get mad at me

change the title for the forum section from "The Clinic" to "The Asylum"

anything goes.....a complete free for all...."the lunatics are in charge of the Asylum"

no poster can be banned whilst posting in "The Asylum"......only in other sections of the forum where the normal operating procedures and rules are to be adhered to

win / win - the comedic element of "The Clinic / Asylum" will return - posters / members will return in droves to go toe to toe

the mod / admin team have one less area of the forum to police - i can only imagine this section gives them the most headaches?

I've thought about this before, but my conclusion has always been -that it won't do much good.

We already have a sidebar thread (several years old) but no one is using it...

And never would we create a free for all thread just so we could be free of moderating on tough and complicated issues. That would be against the spirit of every mod here I think.

Letting posters go all out on eachother in one single thread will no doubt in my min create spillover to the genereal tone of the forum.
Let's remember this is a forum not just for long time posters with thick skin, but also for all the lurkers, potential new members, and people who don't thrive with a rough tone.
