Thanks for the tip but I think the owners of the forum would still take issue.wendybnt said:Make the troublesome part of the forum invisible to non-members then. Its what I did on the really sh1tty dog forum I moderated.
mrhender said:JackRabbitSlims said:change the title for the forum section from "The Clinic" to "The Asylum"
anything goes.....a complete free for all...."the lunatics are in charge of the Asylum"
no poster can be banned whilst posting in "The Asylum"......only in other sections of the forum where the normal operating procedures and rules are to be adhered to
win / win - the comedic element of "The Clinic / Asylum" will return - posters / members will return in droves to go toe to toe
the mod / admin team have one less area of the forum to police - i can only imagine this section gives them the most headaches?
I've thought about this before, but my conclusion has always been -that it won't do much good.
We already have a sidebar thread (several years old) but no one is using it...
And never would we create a free for all thread just so we could be free of moderating on tough and complicated issues. That would be against the spirit of every mod here I think.
Letting posters go all out on eachother in one single thread will no doubt in my min create spillover to the genereal tone of the forum.
Let's remember this is a forum not just for long time posters with thick skin, but also for all the lurkers, potential new members, and people who don't thrive with a rough tone.

Ridiculous.
Plus I think there is a bug because if you hit SUBMIT repeatedly it FUBARs completely and won't submit from that page regardless of wait time.
Stupid.
Chill..
I quite often see you posting twice in the same thread in a short period of time. Also it's annoying to read three different posts of the same user in a row. So then there's the possibility to edit your post instead of posting a new one.
But apparently you were talking about posting in different topics. Okay, you explained that and now the mods can respond. Don't get mad at me![]()
When 'bot' is used to describe a group or individual poster here on the forum we (mods) treat the term as we would any other insult.thehog said:Mods - Is the term 'bots' banned from usage? If so, why? If people talk about going against the Clinic faithful why can't the term 'bots' be used for those who spew out pro-Sky messages?

As with any insult, they're treated on a case by case basis with regards to potential action taken by mods.

The term clinic 12 on the other hand, has been taken up by many posters as more of a badge of honor. Granted, some do refer to and call clinic regulars terms that have the same meaning as the term bots, and those should/will be dealt with in the same or similar manner.
All these terms depend on the context in which they are said. The term bot used in reference to other posters though is an insult plain and simple.

The problem with using it on this forum is that you may think it's a playful term but the members on the other end may not share the same opinion and take it as an insult.thehog said:Afrank said:I'm not entirely clear on how the term clinic 12 came to be. The term ‘bot’ came from the Demand Media people who used to write pro-lance stuff on forums and comment sections back in the yellow band wearing glory days. It’s a reference to those who don’t put much thought into their postings about Sky and post material like “there is no evidence”, “innocent until proven guilty”. I think in some ways “Skybot” is affectionate, it’s not meant to be an insult it’s more a jibe to get people thinking a little more than posting the same stuff on repeat, “there is no proof”. Critical thinking is what we are looking for.
I do agree it depends on the context. Most of the time its a playful term to encourage discussion.

what about referring to the clinic as "rancid". Is this an insult and if so is it better or worse than being called a bot?

Clinic 12 was originally used as an insult, yes.
And is used as an insult when leveled at people as a means of dismissing people's opinion through labeling and grouping people who tend not to believe the schtick published by alleged anti-doping advocates.
Black people call each other and themselves, ******, and it's accepted / a badge.
Someone non-black calling them a ****** tends to be insulting.
Clinic 12 is exactly the same.

Depends partly on the context, but I would most likely consider it to be an insult.
As for better or worse...no idea. Again, I'd judge that on the context. No matter what they are both terms that it would be wise to avoid using.

Calling somebody a bot implies that he cannot think doesn't it? I'd say it is a pretty straightforward insult.python said:i dont quite understand the restrictions on certain common words usage.
i mean, the words like the bot, rancid etc are used in the leading printed media all the time. unlike a hundred or so of the active cn users, those words are read by hundreds of thousands daily.
what matters is if the bickering and a personally jibing attitude has displaced a constructive discussion. i can think of at least a dozen far more insulting words that would raise my flag. calling someone a skybot or a lancy poo or a clinic 12 is imo innocuous.
calling me a snake, instead of my stated handle, isn't![]()

you could say the same about pretty much 90 % of the users here. Most of them have their opinions which do not change over time, so they end up saying the same thing over and over. Does that make them bots?Benotti69 said:Eshnar said:Calling somebody a bot implies that he cannot think doesn't it? Calling someone a bot implies they have been 'programmed' what to post. It sure does appear that way in certain threads, imho.
