When I consider the kind of vicious personal stuff I have regularly seen on this forum since the beginning, when I consider the systematic, deliberate trolling perpetrated by many of the regulars, and when I then see the kind of pathetic wrist slaps that have been handed out to regular, repeat offenders, to trolls of the most annoying kind, it really does gall me that I was hit with a month bannination for one momentary expression of disgust at the personal abuse directed at the late Nelson Mandela, to wit, "fcuk off and die" - something that clearly was not intended to be taken literally.

Moreover, despite this being my 'first offense', not one mod saw fit to address me privately by PM. Instead, more than a week after the post in question was removed, I suddenly found myself banninated for a month, when far worse offenses by repeat offenders have attracted bans of days or weeks.

Just one small, personal example of why this forum has lost many decent posters, who presumably also got fed up with the lack of any consistency on the part of the mods, and with the way some posters are able to 'get away' with far more than others.

banning someone for a month for something that was said in the heat of the moment and clearly not serious is a joke. Ban him for a day, delete the post and everyone can move on with their lives.

Banning Hog for a month is of course a joke as well. What did he do to deserve that?

This is why no one respects any of the mods.

very funny.............if your really so concerned why not encourage hoggy

to post with a certain level of humility instead of thinking that the forum

is for them alone and forum rules are for others

the forum is better without hoggy's continual trolling , baiting , flaming and

misrepresentation of the truth

It looked to me like he was making an effort to tone it down a bit. Anyway, in my opinion he isnt any worse than the people he is arguing with.

Just seems ridiculous to ban someone for a month for basically nothing.

I know everyone wont agree but I find Hog very entertaining most of the time and the clinic is pretty dull without him.

Doesnt seem like a good idea to ban everyone with a different opinion or that is able to stir up some ****. Eventually well be left with everyone agreeing with each other and Dr Vortex/Benotti posting wars that nobody will read.

While I do think TheHogs ban is overtly harsh, his style has gotten very old.
They used to be quite amusing - but they started becoming increasingly nasty.
Ultimately he trolled too well, the major victims of his trolling stopped posting here, and TheHog went and trolled them there too. Although with a little more subtly, which shows the difference in knowing a way around moderation.

Well, which is it?
Are you saying me & Benotti agree with each and are boring? Or we disagree with each other, and are still boring?

Also - while I do wish there was more humour & fun here, I do not come here for 'entertainment' - this is a cycling forum!!
If you want some entertaining websites I can PM you some.

TheHog went where?
I agree his month ban seems like an overreaction.

Not boring, but you do post a lot of OT, in many threads, that usually make them unreadable.

I genuinely do not believe I do.
This is not flamming, nor saying you are wrong - but if I find a post that I find interesting or worthy of response to, then I will post it.

As I said before, technically - we are both engaged in OT right here as its the Mods threads.
But as it may be something that helps in the overall smooth running of the forum, then I am certainly interested in your views.
(And if mods want to move it wherever, they can do so)

You didn't answer the question where you said TheHog went trolling too, I assume you meant another forum?

You know very well what I mean, you've clogged so many threads, don't act like you don't know that.

I always like to hear different opinions, there's never a right or wrong in them.

To get back on topic, TheHogs month ban seems ridiculous, unless he posted something very ott.

And I do thank the mod team for the ungrateful job, but this is still the place even the pro's read, so keeping it readable serves us all.

I could name a couple others at least that are way more 'unreadable culprits' than Mas

Apologies, I am not going to out TheHogs other places of residence publicly.
Mainly, because it should not effect what they do or are allowed do here.

(If you feel the need to know you can PM me.)

Honestly. No, I didn't, that is why I asked.
And you said I take threads OT, which again I do not believe I do.
The clogging - sure, I can see that. It is not my intent, but I can accept that.

And to be clear - the reason I asked you is because you are someone I respect and quite frankly I would regret if I peed off.
So, when i ask, I am not defending myself - just attempting to understand so I can modify my behavior.

Good point, I'll leave it at that.

I respect you too Dr. Mas, and I respect your opinions too even if I don't share them sometimes.

You know what I mean about clogging up threads, as you said.

You haven't peed me off at all, I welcome all talk as long as it's not repeating page after page :)

I do indeed do that - again, it is not my intent - but often somebody posts something that interests me and I ask for clarification, as I have with you because I genuinely do not understand a point. And on that....we better leave it.

I think Hog is pretty harmless, as long as you dont take him too seriously. Of course I havent been on the receiving end so its probably easy for me to say. Anyway, I think banning regular posters for that long for relatively minor offenses is not a very good way to run a forum. Of course, if the alternative is to go post on BikeRadar, maybe the expect people to come back anyway..

Well I dont really know what you and Benotti agree/disagree on, I just find it really boring when you two launch into those long exchanges and both refuse to give up.

But I could probably have just written that I agree with what peloton said.

No. Hog is apparently annoying enough to make some Sky sympathizers/fans seek refuge in the sanctuary of the b*******r.

hog used to be quite humorous and kept his disdain fairly well subdued..

on the surface his posts look fairly innocuous

as of late he has been going at the throat of RR if no one has noticed. What's going on with that?

It is not like RR has not been giving it back with equal or greater disdain for thehog and everyone else who disagrees with him.

A month long ban is ridiculous. That thread was under control. I think the real issue is the Skrybabies are pursuing a campaign to ban thehog by constantly reporting his posts, and the mods don't have the swingers to not act if someone hits the "report" button. The forum has been reduced to reactive moderation done without thought.

Benson saw the 40 odd post flags, just like I did, and for a change decided to take action personally
Why do I get the impression that there's an entire army of non-posters who sit behind-the-scenes and do little more than report posts?

Are they completely unfamiliar with the "ignore" feature?

Personally, I have a good twenty-odd names on my ignore list. Makes navigating the forum much more productive and a better use of my time.

Who doesn't react when they are getting trolled?

Particularly when its a deliberate attempt that appears fuelled by jealousy. Pretty clear that things amped up when RR said he met Porte. Which for someone inside the sport should not be that unusual, yet TheHog, who of course claims great inside access went crazy.

TheHog claiming inside knowledge was amusing for a short while - but then they started to believe it and literally would keep it up after being exposed.
While a month is IMO excessive they aren't really heeding the warnings and are not giving the mods much alternative.

I think we need some statistics on whose posts get reported the most and who is doing all this reporting.

Maybe Benson could share that info with Papp, and then he could inform the rest of us.

Or maybe we need another poll! :D

That is not the type of "reaction" I am talking about. I was referring to reactive moderation rather than proactive. I have seen it happen on a lot of forums. Instead of reading threads and participating in discussions, so they aware of the give and take of a discussion plus the mood of the group or thread, mods get lazy, even losing interest in participating. They rely on reported posts to decide when to act. They charge in without knowing what is going on and make bad moderating decisions. Maybe a better term would be "squeaky wheel moderating." That is what seems to be going on here.

I would like to see the posts from the after the Armstrong thread lock where thehog was "trolling" RR. RR made some clear distortions of what Hincapie said and got called on it.

Ah, gotcha - and yes, I would agree that if the mods are merely reacting to the report function then they will get a distorted view of an exchange.

I may be wrong, but I suspect that a lot of reports are from people taking exception to something 'bad' being posted about their favourite rider.

My crystal ball tells me that there are thread lockdowns and member bans on the immediate horizon.

I just want to log my protest of such actions ahead of time. :D
