From the view of an ex-racer I can say that i have only personally seen this kind of performance unfold under two scenarios.

1. A vastly superior pro team shows up at a small/local event and they have the 7 strongest in the field and the gap to the next strongest rider is considerable.

2. A team with a big budget, well organized team has picked a specific event to gear their doping program (includes a team I raced with).

Note: Don't even bother asking me for specifics names (team, riders, or race). Apologies in advance of inevitable questions.

This reminds me of the Tour Mediterrannée in 1994 (or 1993) where on stage 2 the GB-MG team completely shelled the peleton.

I'm not sure if this counts - but how about Thor Hushvold's break in the mountains to take the green jersey from Cavendish, TdF stage 15 in 2009? Was an amazing ride when I watched it. I see he also repeated the feat in stage 13 of 2011 TdF - both summarised here:

That performance isn't too suspicious and isn't too memorable either.
Hushovd isn't a Cav, Guardini type of sprinter. he can get over a mountain,
and he does have a reputation of being clean.

Aye, you're probably right but i hadn't seen him do that before & i was suprised - i might have been confusing my take on panache with testing positive :)

Yeah, not sure Hushovd's stage win belongs in here. Was a very smart win: chipping away from the break before the climb so he could climb at his own pace (and have a bit of a head start so he wasn't 5 minutes down at the top), descending like a demon and then being strong enough to get rid of Moncoutie when he stopped working, and having the confidence to bomb past Roy rather than leaving it to the sprint. Classy victory.

Vaughters tt win in the 2001 dauphine, he came clean on twitter yesterday that he was doped to the gills for it and then pulled out in case he got caught.

Luz Ardiden 1990. Big Mig even has time to manouvre LeMond, watch minute 16 to 17.
And of course, the last 400 metres, lol.

actually that stage is a symbol of the passing of the guard...the young, non-doped french guard...Delion and Fillipot, for the last time prominent in the mountains...two very promising young careers cut short by cheaters like chiappucci, bugno, indurain, etc...

Just watching the Sestriere 99 stage. Funny comment from Sherwen: "I was talking to Armstrong a couple of days ago about his performance in the time trial. He said "Well if you think that's good, wait till you see me in the mountains, my advisers have told me I'm going to be better in the mountains than I am in the time trial".

HOW did the general sporting press not immediately start investigating this stuff when it happened. I mean, he was so blatant. :)

The sporting press knew exactly what was going on.

LeBlanc actually came in the press room that day and ask the journalists to not write the obvious.

He said save the Tour to save yourselves.

I believe I already nominated chiappucci at sestrieres which was ridonkulous. That guy would have had a completely anonymous career without epo. This is where epo changed the game - real prospects like fillipot and delion lost their careers to freakin non talent chiappucci.

And now I'd like to nominate moser's hour record - destroying the ultimate effort by Merckx - a rider who beat him in almost every itt they competed in. And it comes out that he blood doped his way to it...

Agreed. I recently read "the death of Marco Pantani" and noticed Chiappucci "normal" Hct was 35%. Easy to understand how he came from nowhere using EPO and raising his Hct to 57%. His decline began in '93 when many started EPO - as he had really no talent without it - and the 50% rule ended his fake career in '97

Most memorable undoped performances.

How about the most memorable UNDOPED performances?

I happened on a youtube link last night to the 1994 TdF. Started it up, and found I couldn't watch it. Too boring - not because of the racing, but because I knew the racing was bogus. I have a feeling all those VCR tapes I converted to CD will sit in my archives for many a long year - untouched. I will go back to the recordings I have from the 80's, though.

So, I looked about for a minute for an 80's performance, and found THIS magnificent race. It IS possible to win with a long breakaway, WITHOUT testosterone, HGH, and EPO. Here we see why Hinault was named the Badger.

Hinault, World Championships, Sallanches, 1980.

And before somebody says he was probably doped to the gills on speed and painkillers - I don't give a goldarn. Those weren't game changers. Steroids and EPO were game changers. But we've been over that territory already. Many times, eh? You didn't get a performance like this from speed. You got a performance like this from talent.

i believe you have to lay that sweet pink hilite over delgado and indurain, my friend. both tested positive.

there is tons of anecdotal evidence on both roche and hinault.

sastre, wiggins and evans -- probably too early to say as these things can take a while to come out...

leaves you with lemond.
