Another crazy stage during the infamous Giro 2006 is Stage 19, Trento-Aprica with the Mortirolo. That stage was infamous because Gutierrez (189cm, 80kg) kept the pace of Cunego (169cm, 57kg) on Mortirolo and Simoni famously accused Basso of being extraterrestrial. Of course journalists called Simoni a coward for those charges, but in 1 month and 2 days we learnt about Basso’s involvement in Operation Puerto.

1986 Conconi (yes, that Conconi!) was commenting the race for Rai. At about 3:50 Conconi said that Argentin was the guy who was able to recover much faster than everybody else. At 6:13 Conconi said that we were not even close to have reached the limits of the human body. And at 13:55 with half a lap to go Conconi said that he was sure Argentin was going to win.

Erik Dekker 2004 Paris Tours.

If it was a film it would be panned for being too far-fetched but to sum up the plot Dekker is in the break for over 200kms, drops everyone one by one until he's alone with 10km to go, gets joined by fresh blood (Flecha, Kessler, Astarloa), attacks and drops them, only Kessler can get across but he's left for dead in the sprint, and frankly so is the chasing peloton. Also some amusing quotes in the CN report

I think this a little too far fatched as well.

Dekker certainly went to the pharmacy that morning. Yet...

Group up front for 200 kms. Dekker clearly the best but not good enough. 4 other riders got back. Dekker obviously having difficulties to keep up with them. Than attacks again (slightly) DOWNHILL because the others are looking at each other. Than beats Kessler in a sprint while Dekker is known to be fast.

Than I would say Richard's Virenque win in Paris-Tours is more odd. Chasing peloton behind Durand and Virenque who have no more than 2m30sec with 50kms to go. Virenque still manages to survive with all the little climbs at the end, and chasing riders.

Pretty much agree on everything. Especially that Museeuw win was a disgrace. When he once said he was using doping at the end because he wanted to finish his career in style, every sane person knew he was lying.

Thats the worse, dopers who partly confess. Just confess everything or just deny.

@ Duitema, I believe only 20 riders got to the finish. Together with Sallanches 1980, steepest climb ever.

I've encountered a pretty interesting case some time ago - TdF '79. Hinault and Joop were so flying, that they flew away on the Paris stage from the entire peleton to finish over 2min ahead. Zoetemelk was later busted for dope and got penalized 10min. Still he ended up being 2nd in GC. Interesting that Hinault wasn't busted too. I know that Paris stages were quite hilly those days and Hinault was a pretty competitive sprinter, but dropping entire peleton on a mostly flat course in 1979 (not 1939) is quite E.T.

Ugrumov '94 was fun. Any GT from '99 was like from outer space. Pantani taking Pampeago like flat & Madonna di Campiglio like a descend, Armstrong with lifeless eyes having trouble to fit in turns going uphill, VDB soap opera + now kinda forgotten Ullrich's Avila TT. Freddy Maertens in TdF '76 is pretty dope too. One of the more montainous editions and he some kinda hung on to end 8th in GC. If he could, then why Sagan or Matthews cannot? Hesjedal & Kruijswijk in Giro '15 going Sella all over the place, Amador being suddenly a GC guy and Astana being... Astana.

Claudio Chiappucci's legendary Sestriere stage in the 1992 Tour de France, he attacked the first time after 14km, attacked again with 200km to go and rode alone for 125km, the stage was 254.5 km long.

These two.
Bauer could climb when he needed to. He'd been tenth in the 1985 Tour. And he was in yellow (I know, I saw that stage pass the village I was on holiday in). Hampsten just had a bad Tour. He'd won the Giro, maybe he wasn't up to two GTs (few were).

As for Gilbert v the Schlecks. The Schlecks did their usual think of not attacking if the other couldn't follow.

I haven't seen this one mentioned before. Is of Martin Farfan, lesser known colombian cyclist, in Vuelta a España 1990 in stage 18 with finish in Cerler (Alto de Ampriu). For several times he had to wait for the team's leader, Fabio Parra, one of the best climbers at the time.

As a Finnish sports enthusiasts just experienced the Lahti 2001 doping fiasco a year before, I can vividly remember my disbelief when I saw how this teutonic Spaniard led practically every second of the entire 30 km race at the 2002 olympics and won by a huge margin of 2:02 (ie. 3 %) even after all the disadvantages of solo effort (drag etc.)

Everyone knows how that fairy tale ended.

My most memorable doping performance has nothing to do with the pros.
I used to ride with a fellow cat 2 rider who swore that something involving baking powder enhanced performance. I can't remember the cocktail, but he entered a cat 4 race using a friend's licence just for kicks and won by a mile. That is something I will never forget.

There have been so many drug fuelled performance to chose from but Chris Horner at Vuelta 2013 takes the biscuit because no one. not one person, believed it. Not the commentators, not his own team, no cyclist in the race , ...but what made it even more spectacular was he rode every stage standing up with a manic grin on his face .he never sat down , not once . while being 42!!! (and looking 92) ..the whole thing was so bizzare and so blatant ...and no one could do anything about it...sums up the madness of cyclng
