We have two riders quickly approaching the greats of the sport in terms of most GT podiums achieved during their careers. This (incomplete) list surprised me at first, seeing how many active riders feature in the all time rankings. It must be noted that in the past top riders often skipped the Vuelta because of calendar issues.

Jacques Anquetil - 13/16 partecipations - 81% of podiums - 8 wins

Bernard Hinault - 12/13 - 92% - 10 wins
Eddy Merckx - 12/16 - 75% - 11 wins
Felice Gimondi - 12/20 - 60% - 5 wins

Christopher Froome - 11/21 - 52% - 7 wins
Vincenzo Nibali - 11/27 - 41% - 4 wins

Raymond Poulidor - 10/18 - 55% - 1 win
Gino Bartali - 10/22 - 45% - 5 wins

Fausto Coppi - 9/17 - 53% - 7 wins
Miguel Indurain - 9/23 - 39% - 7 wins
Alejandro Valverde - 9/32 - 28% - 1 win

Tadej Pogacar - 8/8 - 100% - 5 wins
Primoz Roglic - 8/17 - 47% - 5 wins
Joop Zoetemelk - 8/18 - 44% - 2 wins
Pedro Delgado - 8/24 - 33% - 3 wins

Jonas Vingegaard - 7/8 - 88% - 2 wins
Jan Ullrich - 7/12 - 58% - 2 wins
Alberto Contador - 7/14 - 50% - 7 wins
Charly Gaul - 7/14 - 50% - 3 wins
Roberto Heras - 7/16 - 44% - 4 wins
Gilberto Simoni - 7/25 - 28% - 2 wins

Gustave Garrigou - 6/8 - 75% - 1 win
Giovanni Brunero - 6/9 - 66% - 3 wins
Bartolomeo Aimo - 6/9 - 66% - no wins
Alfredo Binda - 6/11 - 55% - 5 wins
Francesco Moser - 6/14 - 43% - 1 win
Greg LeMond - 6/16 - 37% - 3 wins
Luis Ocana - 6/16 - 37% - 2 wins
Nairo Quintana - 6/20 - 30% - 2 wins
Tony Rominger - 6/18 - 33% - 4 wins
Laurent Fignon - 6/18 - 33% - 3 wins
Claudio Chiappucci - 6/20 - 30% - no wins
Carlos Sastre - 6/26 - 23% - 1 win

Another interesting statistic is the % of podiums achieved out of all partecipations in GTs. Hinault dominates this ranking with an unbelievable 92% of podiums (and 77% of wins!).

Hinault's percentage would be 100% if not for a knee injury forcing him to retire a Tour he was dominating
And even then when he retired he was wearing the Yellow Jersey.

I haven't done the maths on the others but 9/15 is only 60% not 66% for Froome's podiums

Feel free to add riders that I forgot in the list.
Joop Zoetemelk 8/18 2 wins
Raymond Poulidor 10/18 1 win

Also is Rodriguez's five podiums the most without a win?

Absolutely, I did all of these while I was drunk last night (Berto :( ), thanks for the correction.

I'll add all the suggested riders later. Cheers.

I'll have the cutoff at 6 for now. I'm sure there are a few more to add but can't find them.

Active riders are underlined. Riders are ranked per numbers of podium, then % of podiums.

I think podium rate may be better measured if you just take don't include the GTs before the first and after the last top 10 result.

Looks like 20 GTs is close to the upper limit of how long you can be competitive.

How are the podiums counted anyway? One can argue that Heras has 7 podiums. Or 6 podiums and 3 wins.

If your name isn't Alejandro Valverde, yes. :D

Valverde's last podium to date was in his 19th GT. Of the riders listed in the OP Simoni and Sastre podiumed their 20th.

Edit: Delgado podiumed the last one he rode.
