Update.
Nibali matches Froome's 11 podiums and they currently share the 5th place all time behind Anquetil, Hinault, Merckx and Gimondi. Froome has a chance to get his 12th podium next month.
So does Nibali ;)

I very much doubt that, but yes, technically you're right :)

Froome's streak is in line with the very best of this sport, indeed.

Another interesting stat: in 18 of the 25 GTs ridden since 2011 at least one between Froome or Nibali was on the final podium (9 only Froome, 7 only Nibali, 2 both).

Since the start of 2016 it's actually even more impressive: 9 out of 10 (5 only Froome, 3 only Nibali, 1 both).

anyone has a "most GT Top 10s without podium" statistic? Would be really interesting in my opinion.
I think a list of current riders would be dominated by Dutch riders:
Kruijswijk 6, Mollema 6, Gesink 5

Contador was only on the podium when he won?

Speaks volume about what type of rider he was.

Pozzovivo has 7, don't know if that's "best".

Franco Pellizotti - 5
Roman Kreuziger - 5
Manuel Beltrán - 5

Domenico Pozzovivo - 7 (as someone mentioned earlier, havent been able to find someone with more)

Don't know about without podiums, but last I checked Delgado held the record for most top 10s in GTs.

Equal on 18 with Gimondi and Bartali it seems. And one ahead of Valverde.

Bernard Hinault - 12/13 - 92% - 10 wins
Two things stand out for me from this amazing statistic. First, just how good was Hinault, when the only time he started a GT and failed to podium was the 1980 Tour, when he had to drop out because of injury while in the lead? Second, just how good was Fignon in 1984, when he beat Hinault in the Tour by more than ten minutes?

Safe to say, those guys were good. I would love to see a French rider win the TDF soon, just to see Paris go nuts.

Only counting finishes, though. DNFs in 2014 Tour (probable podium) and Vuelta 15 (probably not, he wasn’t at full strength) fall right in the middle. But yes, impressive.

Dan Martin, Pierre Rolland 4 top 10s each. Louis Meintjes and Davide Formolo 3 each and counting.

That statistic is helped by the fact that Hinault didn't ride a single GT in his first three years as pro and retired at 31 when he still was at his best or very close to.

Regarding 1984 we should take in account the fact the he was coming from a knee surgery and missed all the second half of previous season due to the tendonitis and the surgery to solve it. If i recall correctly he won only two races prior to this Tour in which is probably the second worst spring of his career after his debut season.

UPDATE
Alejandro Valverde matches Coppi and Indurain with 8 career podiums in GTs. In the process he clinches two other records:
  • most top10s in GTs (19)
  • most years between first and last (?) podium (16)

Nairo Quintana had a realistic chance of joining Contador, Ullrich and another handful of champions at 7 career podiums but he came short. Quintana had a brilliant start to his career, podiuming 6 of his first 9 GTs, but has failed to make the podium in his last 5 attempts. He is still 4th in number of podiums among active riders.

In 2019 Geraint Thomas and Primoz Roglic have joined the club of riders with multiple career podiums. They'll need at least another couple of years to make an appearance in this very selected list though.

As always, if you think riders are missing feel free to make your contribution.

Jacques Anquetil - 13/16 partecipations - 81% of podiums - 8 wins

Bernard Hinault - 12/13 - 92% - 10 wins
Eddie Merckx - 12/16 - 75% - 11 wins
Felice Gimondi - 12/20 - 60% - 5 wins

Raymond Poulidor - 10/18 - 55% - 1 win
Gino Bartali - 10/22 - 45% - 5 wins

Fausto Coppi - 9/17 - 53% - 7 wins

I would bet against both of them at the moment, but I've been wrong before about them so who knows.
