Looks like 20 GTs is close to the upper limit of how long you can be competitive.
If your name isn't Alejandro Valverde, yes. :D

Valverde's last podium to date was in his 19th GT. Of the riders listed in the OP Simoni and Sastre podiumed their 20th.

Edit: Delgado podiumed the last one he rode.
And that was his 24th GT. Lejarreta and Poulidor are one ahead: their last podium was their 25th GT.

UPDATE: Chris Froome is now tied with Nibali, Poulidor and Bartali with 10 podiums in GTs.

I know this is about podiums, but the implication is that podiums are a proxy for palmares/quality. I’d clump by wins for quality, personally, especially since there are some riders who were win or bust. AC’s 7 (9), wins with 0 podiums sticks out, for example.

Valverde could very well get another Vuelta podium this year or next year. Also his form last year was certainly good enough to get one.

Contador with no podiums outside of victory. Absolute killer.

That might be the most amazing part of Contador's GT stats.
It's really such a petty stat, but I love it, with the 2 4ths and 2 5ths.

Anyway, I think it's more interesting to look at success rate in races where they actually rode for GC. I don't think it's great to count Nibali riding the 2016 Tour for example.

It could get a bit tricky though.
For instance, should we count Froome's first try in the Giro or the Tour? Who knows if he rode for GC or simply as a learning experience?
Same applies to most riders. And going back to the past it geets even more difficult.

Leave it as is. It draws a distinction between the riders who were GT leaders from the start (Hinault, Merckx) and those who served their apprenticeship (Indurain, Froome), but also allows for those who achieved podiums even as they served their apprenticeship (Lemond, Ullrich). It doesn’t say that one path is better than the other, as it’s merely a statistic, but to eliminate first and last would distort the records of those who achieved a podium in their first and/or last more than those who didn’t.

With a more calculated riding style he would have more podiums. But also less wins ;)
Which would have turned out as podiums? (of the 4ths and 5ths)

2011 Tour, I think. No chance for the others.

Probably Voeckler loses less time than Contador gains in that scenario in the 2011 Tour.

And for all the people gushing about the wins-no other podiums stat, when did Contador risk a likely podium to go for a win? So really, apart from the 2012 Vuelta and maybe the 2017 Vuelta the stat has nothing to do with any aggressive riding.

He also won 1 GT and lost 2 podiums with a margin less than 30 seconds so there was probably some degree of chance involved as well.

He was 2nd in GC after stage 19 in the 2013 Tour and launch an all-out attack, cracked, and finished up 4 overall.

Not only that, but his teammate Kreuziger was sitting in 4th and slipped a place working for him, allowing Purito onto the podium.
