Movie thread: Did you catch a great movie lately

I searched the forum and couldn't believe that nobody has started a thread where you can discuss recent movie experiences.

So here it is!

This thread is meant for casual discussion. Maybe you catched a good movie on the telly yesterday, maybe you had a awesome experience in the movie theater.
Doesn't matter, only restriction is it has to be a recent experience.

I'll start out.

Nothing speciel, just a feel good movie. "Race the Sun". (although Halle Barry is quite special).

Story line in short: A group of high school kids from hawaii, for whom life has teached them nothing but failure and defeats, is inspired to break free from this culture by participating in a science contest, where the contestants have to build their own solar car for racing.
Basically we follow these kids from the point where they are stuck on the tag lolo (loser), until the great succes in the world solar challenge in Australia.
Of course they experience a lot of "speed bumps" on the rode to succes, but they manage to overcome it all.

Based on a true story. Probably not the kind of movie you would rate very high, but Who doesn't like an occasionally feel good movie? in addition it's was well played by the actors.

Attack Girls Swim Team versus the Undead. Maybe it was not a great movie. Maybe it was not even a good movie. Okay, it was terrible. But I did catch it, and I caught it lately. So two out of three ain't bad.

Who's seen 'unstoppable'? Any good?

Yeah! that's my kind of movie. Simple plot all action. What's not to like about that?

In all seriousness I love a wide range of genres. But sometimes it's just nice to sit down and enjoy some classic hollywood action.

City of god.

Like all things the book is better than the movie, but the film is amazing, and anyone who wants to go round calling themselves a gangster or a g, should watch it and see what real criminals are like.

Its Brazilian so LS with his love of all things Portugese in language, should like it.

I'll agree w/BikeBoy. I liked it. Simple movie, lots of action. Love Denzel Washington and Chris Pine did a nice job. The thing I liked about it most was it was a true story. I'm sure it had it's dose of added Hollywood drama, but it's amazing how the situation portrayed by the moving actually can happen, and did, and more amazing what people did to neutralize the situation. In one word, it was entertaining.

Saw Black Swan today, and while I do not like it more than Requiem for a Dream, it was quite good. I am becoming quite the Aronofsky fan. Just saw that he is directing The Wolverine. That sounds like a great match.

I discovered that a few older movies are becoming available on BluRay. I just bought 'Otto e mezzo" by Fellini. Haven't seen it in a while and I was surprised how great it looked. I'm going to get a few more Blu Rays now.

As Mrs Rat puts every film in the entire world she hasn't seen on our Lovefilm list (currently over 500 titles listed  ), I haven't seen many new ones recently. The latest one was some Danish piece of garbage that we switched off after 10 minutes. Green Zone, Gran Torino, Girl with Dragon Tattoo and Scott Pilgrim were good though.

Oh, and 'Arry Braahn, starring Michael Caine and with Plan B as a complete and utter c[word Susan would ban me for using, but which his character seems to use every sentence]. This is a film NOT to be seen with parents, children or more sensitive souls, but is cracking. "You failed to maintain your weapon, Son".

That's news to me. Very interesting.

Saw 'The Fighter' Friday night. Was a little disappointed considering how much Conan was hyping it up. Bale overacted in my opinion, and as a result overshadowed Wahlberg (who the movie was supposed to be about.)

True Grit was my favorite of the year so far, but haven't seen Black Swan yet.

"Control"

Just watched the movie 'Control' about Joy Division and Ian Curtis by Anton Corbijn

Flipping brilliant! Best movie I've seen in ages.

Most but not everyone will no. Joy Division were the precurser to the band New Order. Ian Curtis was the lead singer but comitted suicide the eve of their debut N American tour - this is the story as told by his wife Debbie Curtis.

If you can believe it Wiki is good for something... But the movie is almost unbelievable.
Unstoppable 2010 Film
Inspiration
Main article:
CSX_8888_incident
Unstoppable is inspired by the CSX 8888 incident (also called the "Crazy Eights" unmanned train incident) in 2001. The train, led by CSX Transportation SD40-2 #8888, left its Walbridge, Ohio, rail yard and began a 66-mile (106 km) journey through northwest Ohio with no one at the controls. The freight train consisted of 47 cars, some of them loaded with hazardous cargo... I'll leave it at that

True Grit
Jeff Bridges... outstanding acting.
Matt Damon... pretty good job.
Hailee Steinfeld... excellent job, came across as an assertive 14-year old rather than one that needs a "what-for".
All acting was a big improvement over the original True Grit.

I really didn't like Unstoppable. It was just full of cliches and too 'americanised'. Very Hollywood might be a better way to describe it!

That's a brilliant film. The lead actor (can't remember his name) was spooky in how well he captured Ian Curtis. Keep meaning to see that again, but it's not a film to watch while trying to destroy yourself on the turbo.

+2 that was a great film. Excellent decision to do it in black n white too - really added to the whole thing.

don't really go to the cinema much these days, but the last dvd I recently saw was SALT. A really good little film.

I saw "The Horse Boy" last night. A doc about the parents of an out of control and suffering autistic child who take him to Mongolia to be treated by shamans. A really beautiful film. I'm usually pretty sceptical about "alternative" medical treatment but the effect the shamans had on this boy was undeniable.

Black Swan was outstanding, thought provoking film making. And an excellent acting effort by Natalie Portman, digging deeply into a very complex and conflicted character.
"The Fighter" is my other favorite, of late. With stellar performances by Christian Bale, and Melissa Leo.
