I like a lot of the old school japanese films. I am a big Shintaro Katsu fan. Aside from the Blind Swordsman series, the Razor series is too funny.

I also really like Takeshi Kitano's films.

In fact right now Japan has the some of the most inventive cinema. The French are making great horror films, and the Koreans have a lot of good stuff.

Will have to make some time to start watching more...
I'm not a horror fan...I need 'nice' and 'settling' movies these days haha..I love Jaques Tati. You need to take yourself down a notch in energy and get in the flow of his stuff for sure. 'Traffic' by Tati is hilarious.

You must see Runaway Train. It was written by Kurosawa!

I saw that again a few years ago when it showed up on cable. Good show.

In a similar vein, if you have never seen Emperor of the North then you might give that a go. Two hobos in the 1930's battle a vicious train attendant. It stars Lee Marvin and Earnest Borgnine as well as a young Keith Carradine.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Shintaro Katsu and his Zatoichi character. I have all the films and most of the TV episodes. (If it weren't for California law I'd probably have a cane sword, too. )

Zatoichi was popular in Hawaii. In the seventies Katsu came to Honolulu to promote something or other, and was caught trying to smuggle hash-hish into the country in his underwear. When he was released (after paying a fine or something) local reporters were waiting. They asked him, "Shintaro Katsu, have you learned a lesson from this?" "Yes," he answered, "I have. I shall never wear underpants again."

Also fond of Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune.

Ugh, I thought they over used his slow mo fight planning, just show us the action, the slow mo didn't add anything to it. Would of been funny if his slow mo thoughts of the fights never transpired and the actual fight was much faster due to his thought of it, not the same exact thing... ugh.

I'd say wait for the DVD or stream.

Yeah, during the movie I had the same thought... until the final fight scene following the chess match. Then I realized the slow mo scenes earlier were more about seeing things before they happen, much like good chess requires the players to think many moves in advance. Holmes' (Downy) ability to see events in advance dictated his final move of the last fight... which included the oxygen breather.

Ian McKellen is Gandalf again. Lots of Dwarfs and I imagine some related humor. I wonder if Glamdring will be in the film?

The Senna movie is great. Horrible Bosses, and MI at Imax was good. Red Dog was so moving. The Movie about the Mossads' attempts to kill a German Doctor who committed war atrocities was also very well shot, with lots of emotion.

Saw holmes game of shadows last night, kinda enjoyed it but the 1st was better, jeremy brett was the best holmes ever in that old UK tv series.... I also really kurosawa n japanese sword films. January or 2012 will have cool movies releasing..btw has anyone seen tinker tailor sailor spy, cant wait to watch it.

Dunno, i don't find the second part any worse than first. Great movie without claims to be a 'proper' Holmes but just a film that makes fun. A scene with Watson right before his wedding is priceless

As an aside, I recently picked up an Apple TV, and one of the coolest things is the ability to take a movie, anything, rip it, and convert it in iTunes to an Apple TV movie. From there I can watch it on my regular TV (instead of the computer). While it takes up disk drive space after a while, it's really handy and typical Apple easy/friendly to use.

I have four movies coming up to watch soon that are either at home from Netflix, borrowed or now on my Apple TV. Anyone have any thoughts?

I liked Contagion. Much more realistic than some of the other infectious disease disaster movies out there. I haven't seen the other three yet.

Apple TV rocks. Plus with sharing your iTunes library, you can watch any movie in your library on any computer. I was watching Colombiana yesterday while on the trainer from a cheap PC connected to a TV in the basement.

Margin call is a frightening and disheartening movie. I loved it. I was in the lower end of the industry, so I understood some things about it beyond what is explained in the movie. It to me was the best movie I saw last year. It also exemplifies why no entity can do anything about what happened in the secondary market for mortgages and things like CDO's in the future. Greed will always find an outlet.

Croupier is an interesting film. Clive Owen is deliciously cold in that.

Thanks for doing that, that is helpful. I think I saw the Clive Owen film in an actual theater, because I happened to be at the mall on the one day it was there.

Dunno about those movies (don't think I've heard of any of them), but the Apple TV thing sounds really interesting. I've often wondered exactly how that works. The great thing about Apple in general is that it's so easy to rip movies. On a PC you have to use at least two different programs and go through so many steps, it's simply not worth it. (As far as I know anyway. I'd be happy to hear about it if somebody knows of an easier way.)

A guy I know who's a huge film buff is also an Apple fan. Right after the Macbook Air came out, he shows up with one. He was on his way out of town, going on vacation. He had ripped eight movies and put them on a thumb drive, for watching on his Macbook Air. And he's not a particularly techie guy. I was just amazed by that.

I'm really interested to see what Apple comes up with next year for their new TV that's supposedly coming out. Just before he died Jobs is supposed to have said that he "cracked" the problem of how to do TV. Awesome if true.

Meanwhile, it sounds like you think the Apple TV device you have now is worthwhile. Correct?

It took me a bit to understand all it can do. But yes, you can put just about any movie into iTunes on your computer, and with one click convert it to an Apple TV movie. Your Apple TV can see this (and anything else in iTunes actually) and play it back on your TV, even though the computer is in the other room! I get tired watching movies, or videos, or tutorials on my computer and sitting in my chair there. But my couch is really comfy!

My iPad also acts as a remote control for the Apple TV. The Apple TV also mirrors my iPad directly on the screen if I want, so I can watch anything on the iPad right on the TV! Anything I find in the web. YouTube, Vimeo, I can mirror Angry Birds on it even. I could be reading this very site on my TV!

But the Apple TV will do more than that. It can play back your Netflix movies, YouTube stuff, watch MLB games, other sports, tons more. It's pretty impressive once you start using it and getting into it. And it's easy, just like most Apple stuff. You plug it in, updated it, and you're off and running. The only un-Apple thing about it is the price. $99. That's it.

God, that sounds fantastic. I should have one of those. Is it basically a drive with dedicated wi-fi? What happens to the resolution though if you're mirroring an iPad game on a large high-res screen?

I just hook up my laptop to my TV and watch. Works great.

Tree of Life was very good as are most of Malick's films. Woody Allen film, Midnight In Paris was an embarrassment. I walked out and I'm a Woody Allen fan generally, my pick for worst film of the year.

The Ides of March was ok but not great. It took a long the for the storyline to develop and the ending was ambigious. Clooney also got a new girlfriend in it as well ( a bit young ) though it was good with him as the " baddy "

I just watched those as well ( they were out on TV ). I felt sorry for the Uncle in Manon des Sources ( after he found out the "Hunchback" was his son )
