Trick (2019) - Even your average porno has more plot than this slasher, the filmmakers waisted no time on story and character development, they just went straight to the slashing. The actors looked like they didn't even want to be there, if at least they looked like they had some fun this flick might be worth watching.

I had a Tower Records just up my street when I first moved to the States, it was very easy to just walk over and flip through all the vinyl old and new. Good times, good times.

The funnest and most bewildering movie-going experience I've ever had ages ago was going to a Rocky Horror midnight show, I just had no idea what the audience was doing because I had never seen Rocky Horror before. Don't know if they still do the shows, but at least now I would know better and I would take my own newspaper with me so I could partake in the fun. :D
For those unfamiliar, historical photos of Susan Sarandon during her Rocky Horror years are amazing.. I find her to be a sensational old woman and she was one of my favorites when she was very young.. Oh yeah and she is a good actress also..

13 Assassins (2010) Japanese Samurai movie directed by Takashi Miike. Remake of a 1963 Japanese movie. The emperor's nephew is out of control and has become an embarrassment to the ruler. Assassins have been tasked with making him disappear permanently. Well shot and acted, culminating in an epic battle scene. A movie for fans of good action and martial arts movies. Reasonably long but never boring.

Graduation Day (1981) - Instead of the usual sorority girls in this slasher an entire high school track team gets killed off, not sure how I feel about that. lol. This horror flick is a total time warp into the 70s-80s, there's a lot of nowadays considered unacceptable behavior between the sexes, and even how the track coach interacts with his athletes - total Bobby Knight behavior! Otherwise it's fairly paint-by-number, but you do get to see a young Vanna White in a very small role. (Even in the small role you could tell she had some acting talent, she wasn't just standing there awkwardly acting pretty.)

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) - Admittedly I didn't pay too much attention and just had it playing in the background because I had already seen it, but each time Donald Pleasance came on screen I had no choice but to pay attention. He was just so over the top I was laughing my ass off... I'm not sure who was more mental, Donald Pleasance or Mike Myers! :tearsofjoy:

From the whole Halloween franchise I truly only like the original and Halloween II, Halloween 5 I can take or leave as things were becoming pretty redundant.

Fingernails
Cool movie by Apple Studios.. premise is you don't waste a bunch of time in life, you get a test were they cut off your fingernail, run some elaborate DNA type test and tell you everything including who you are compatible with.. little problem the female character is living semi happily w her pre determined soul mate but falls in love with another dude, old school, organic animal attraction. Good film.worth your time
Pain Hustlers
Another movie about opioid crisis and director does a good job making you smile and feel happy, until he doesn't and instead of fast, easy money, most of the characters battle with what they sell, their success is killing people. Oh yeah the government does not like it either and everyone starts ratting on one another. Good movie
Five Nights at Freddy's
An absolute must see if you are a heavy pot smoker or recreational drug user!! Don't miss it. A movie about a Chucky Cheese clone pizza place, down to the big mechanical singing and dancing animals.. Ooops this time they are possessed by evil spirits and murder folks, except for one big animal costume is inhabited by an evil employment agency manager that lines people up with the overnight security guard shift at the pizza place. If that sounds dumb,it is and everyone makes no excuses.. It's so bad you can't stop watching it. Could be the most important film you ever see..or not
Old Dads
With Bill Burr
It's so bad that you want to send him some money because the only reason for the movie is for him to get a paycheck, disgraceful
The Burial
Jamie Fox and Tommy Lee Jones, who plays a guy who owns a failing funeral home chain.. Fox plays a lawyer and it's based on a true story. Sounds screwy and it is, good movie and entertaining.

The Guilty (2000) - A fairly decent thriller if you don't mind all the twists and turns and unlikely coincidences... actually all the twists and turns wore me out to where I didn't even really care how the movie finally ended. But up to a point it's thrilling to watch whether Bill Pullman's character truly will screw over his newly found son or not.

Filmed in British Columbia the scenery at least was wonderful, that much I can say for sure.

Better Watch Out (2016) - This psychological holiday horror flick started out with much potential as a terrific parody of Home Alone and such, I really liked the humorous vibe. But then it took a wrong turn with a scene that was pretty rapey, all of a sudden I felt like I was watching A Clockwork Orange. I kept on watching but was so turned off I didn't pay much attention, and then I quit watching entirely. Too bad, I really enjoyed where the movie was initially heading.

This brings to mind movies I never care to watch again because of their rape scenes, those include the aforementioned A Clockwork Orange (1971), I spit on Your Grave (1971), Irreversible (2002), and most definitely Deliverance (1972)!

Manodrome..a good movie as dark as any I can remember seeing in years.

R.A.D.A.R
B- movie about a bionic dog..Dean Cain..ex Superman is the crooked mayor..
Give Me Your Eyes
A blind girl is suddenly alone after her shifty boyfriend leaves her alone in a remote, snow covered house and 2 Jason type killers come after her..she video chats w a random girl who talks her through walking through the snow in the mountains, fighting off the two spooky killers and has a bizarre happy ending
The Baker
Starring Ron Pealman. Yep he is a baker in Florida. His looser son shows up w the baker's granddaughter who he doesn't know or want. And things go kid is mixed up w the mob and they come after the girl. Pearlman's get a way vehicle is a bread delivery van for most of the movie.. Think of Equalizer, every Liam Neisson movie.. Grandpa bakery dude takes on all comers and lots of action sequences.. Not terrible

As far as TV tons of awesome.. New Fargo is great so far.. Jon Hamm is a bad sheriff.
The Curse is about scumbags who look to be getting what is coming to them.. Takes place in New Mexico.
A Nearly Normal Family
It's a mini series made in Denmark. Young daughter appears to have murdered some guy and her parents do anything.. I mean anything to get her out of trouble.
one of my favorite things I have seen. The Long Shadow.. an English mini series about a serial killer in the UK.. It's just excellent.

Not surprisingly Irreversible is a gruelling film for many people as are many of Noe's movies. His latest movie about an old couple coping with Alzheimer's is a complete change of pace for him but supposed to be very good. Just about all of his movies are not easy to watch but interesting. Deliverance was a classic as was A Clockwork Orange. The other two were so so quality wise.

Fargo always delivers. enjoying the new one so far.

Oppenheimer is eminently rewatchable. It's long, but didn't feel too long the second time around. The visuals and sounds make the telling of its story work and truly delivers the final gut-punch, but as an ordinary European, I had no grasp of AEC, its GAB nor for that matter who Strauss was. So that part clicked after reading up on it. I could also better pay attention to how carefully the two framings played off one another, I even totally missed in the cinema that they were titled Fission & Fusion. And goddamnit, I shed a tear in the end again. Even if I think Teller and von Neumann were right, it's such a profound tragedy.

Rewatched Eyes Wide Shut (1999) because I consider it a Xmas movie for adults and tis the season, the first hour that mainly centers around Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise's relationship is a real chore. Kidman's acting was cringy and obnoxious, and Tom Cruise cast as a whimpering doctor I didn't buy at all. (Cruise's acting was actually reminiscent of how he acted on that infamous Oprah episode, he was bizarre and just all over the place.) Things don't really start rolling till Cruise arrives at the mansion and new characters are introduced, things finally get pretty spooky and interesting.

Visually this adult drama is spectacular with all the Xmas colors and decorations, but there were too many super-slow mo shots that didn't really add to the drama, they made the movie unnecessarily long. And, it's weird because Kidman and Cruise were actually a real life couple at the time, hopefully their real life marriage was more tolerable because on-screen they were just the cringiest couple I would never want to meet. (For a real life couple that actually worked well on-screen watch Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf (1966) with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, their real life love/hate relationship seemed very real on-screen.) Having said all this basically I think Eyes Wide Shut would have been better with someone other than Kidman and Cruise.

I thought it was Kubrick's worst film and it was very slow. Had a few moments, not many but the visuals were good.

Kubrick wasn't even around to say what the final cut would have been like being he died, I would like to think his vision would have been a bit better.
Yes, many movies get saved in the editing. I didn't mind it and will rewatch it in the future.but not up there with his best movies for me, anyway and you were right about the acting. many people have said the same. Unusual performances to say the least but it's hard not to think it wasn't partly to do with the direction they were getting.

It's kinda fun to watch youtube videos where people dissect and discuss various movies, I get the impression younger people who weren't around when Eyes Wide Shut came out seem to regard it a lot higher than when it was first released. And it's too bad Kubrick isn't around, apparently he was driving the entire cast and crew nuts with all his retakes, something tells me he would not be happy with the current and only version of Eyes Wide Shut.

Having said that I will still rewatch it, but I'll merrily fast-forward through the first hour that mainly features Kidman and Cruise.

P.S. Wonder what Sydney Pollack, an esteemed director himself, who also starred in this movie thought of the whole mess of working with Kubrick. He was also a surprisingly good actor as well as an esteemed director, which I think is fairly rare.

Yes Pollack made some really good movies.

Kubrick's retakes and perfectionist quibbles drove jack Nicholson crazy and virtually ruined Shelly Duvall's mental health. Sadly her career was never the same after The Shining and she has had mental health issues ever since. Maybe it wasn't just the movie but it certainly contributed to her career slide. Once again the two lead performances in that film also were strange with lot's of over acting especially from Nicholson. Nicholson admitted later that he developed permanent tics and twitches from the repetitive nature of his performance which took years to disappear !

Only Kirk Douglas saved Kubrick from being fired on his first major studio movie Spartacus and Douglas was also the one that pushed for Kubrick to be selected, as the director was young and untried at the time. Douglas co-produced the movie and was a big star at that time so he had plenty of clout. It went over budget as well in shooting but the finished product turned out well with a great cast. They re-teamed again on Paths of Glory which was even better.

Back to Eyes Wide Shut at last I found a review that doesn't hail it, I found it just hysterical. I listened only to the first part where they talk about Kidman and Cruise specifically, their description of Kidman's and Cruise's performances (especially when they were supposed to act like they were drunk and/or stoned) fits mine to the t. Have Kidman and Cruise ever gotten stoned? Had Kubrick?? Cause none of them looked like they knew what they were doing! :tearsofjoy:

Kiss the Girls (1997) - This crime drama starts out well enough in that it's all creepy and stuff, but then it slowly unravels once the killers are revealed. It just gets sillier and sillier, and while it has a R-rating it feels very sanitised. Not that I need to see gore because I certainly don't, but the whole tone seems very made-for-tv so the kids can watch, too. Morgan Freeman was good though (playing the usual wise and knowing father figure), so there was that.

Watched it last night. I enjoyed it. I am confused about the movie and it's depiction of Kai Bird's book, American Prometheus, which I read months after it was released. I listened to a Terry Gross, Fresh Air interview with Bird and before it was over I couldn't wait to read the book. Still consider it one of the best things I have ever read, fiction or non fiction.
Movie was really long, in my opinion spent little to no time on Oppenheimer's early life, and just a little more time of how he felt and lived after inventing a bomb to end the world.
Everyone in the movie are excellent

I really enjoyed it as well, especially the part after the bomb test. I mean, up to and including that scene, you kind of know what's going to happen even if you know very little about Oppenheimer, but the story about the security clearance I wasn't familiar with at all, so I found that really exciting to watch.

There were many geo political and historical issues that had to be boiled down and ultra concentrated to tell the story and even w that it still took 3 hours!! Oppenheimer went to a school in NYC and was raised as a very liberal progressive thinker. In history, not a stretch, that is pointed out over and over in the film that he was a man in demand. He would summer in New Mexico as a boy and young man. It was all smooth sailing in the movie, but history has Oppenheimer gave an ultimatum, either we build the lab and testing facility in New Mexico or I am out.
Hemingway and Oppenheimer were men of a certain age and in the film, Smoking and drinking were downplayed in the film. Both guys had some similar habits. It was never clear in the movie, book or American history when the clear time line of when Russia was depicted as an adversary instead of our ally defeating Germany, Japan. Communism is still a thing.
I watch Napoleon soon..
