I wouldn't say it's the greatest film ever made, but I just so love The Commitments.

Good call. Haven't watched that since university. I'll have to pick it up and see watch it over the holidays. Great music, good story, good acting, that was a very entertaining film. Thanks for the reminder!

I'll go with
1) Last of the Mohicans
2) Dr. Stranglove (Stanley Kubrik's best film)
3) The Life Aquatic
4) Band of Brothers (Miniseries)
5) Rob Roy

I saw the remake of 3:10 to Yuma and I really liked it.
Is it worth it to go and rent the old one? Some movies really didn't age well and I usually don't have the patience for average movies if I already know the story.

Apocalypse Now
Chinatown
Schindler's List
Network
Hoop Dreams
Pulp Fiction
The Last Temptation of Christ
It's a Wonderful Life

Idiosyncratic Picks:

Leaving Las Vegas
Bad Lieutenant
The Rapture
Fresh
Electric Horseman

I also like Spike Lee's stuff, especially Crooklyn, Do the Right Thing.

Can't help but like Titanic. Cameron set out to make the biggest picture ever and pulled it off remarkably well.

Apocalypse Now > The Godfather

Yup, couldn't agree more.

The Godfather looks and sounds dated now. Apocalypse Now is timeless and the ending will never be topped for a war film. It blows my mind that at the time of its release the ending was considered "murky" and unsatisfying, and that many still don't get it.

BTW, Godfather II is greatly superior to the original, although The Godfather is still an all time classic. Just shows how incredible Coppola is.

I wonder when the day will come when a computer wins the "Best Actor" award.

(p.s. -- Bladerunner!)

A computer should have won in 1968 if you ask me. Stanley Kubrick was a great filmaker, "Dave."

That reminds me, I have to go rent 2010 this weekend. ;)

There's a good movie theme-fest to watch in a few years: 1984, 2001/2010, and 2012 -- and compare to how things really were!
