Alpe, you made my day. this in the morning and I can actually go to bed again ;)
I would say that Hassel, Eno, Laswell, Coil are old school musicians, whose thrust isn't necessarily Dark Ambient. Classic stuff that defined the genre (along with Tangerine Dream's Zeit) no doubt.

But I was sort of referring to Dark Ambient of today. I mean, we all know what it is. But do people even know who Lustmord, Deathprod, or Biosphere are? I feel like artists such as False Mirror, Circular 2, Triangular Ascention, Blood Box, Tholen, have put out some pretty impressive music in DA genre in the last couple of years, but despite people talking about interest in DA, it remains very underground.

Thats spike island prison which closed down back in 2004. Thats was a well talked about location here not just in cork but throughtout ireland when it was open. There was talk by the government building a new prison there but now they have turned it into a tourist destination. I live in the city part of cork but when i am down that area by the coast you can see the island in the distance. It was actually nicknamed Ireland"s Alcatraz.

Since we are talking about prisons why dont we listen to this. It was the soundtrack to stallone"s prison show Lock Up:

Ever Since The World Began - Jimi Jamison

It's a nice area down there. But also upper Cork.
So, it's closed. :D
Found the paper. 1995. Wow.

If you only allow your kids to listen to the "safe bands" they're likley to turn to drugs just to relieve the boredom! That site is hysterical!

I guess I'm going to burn in hell cus I'm not giving up my Radiohead or Bjork.

I am so pleased to see that Dean and Gene Ween made the list. They'd be proud. Reckon I'll give The Mollusk a spin tonight after the kids have gone off to bed.

On heavy rotation on the digital plattenspieler lately:

Bonnie Prince Billy-I See A Darkness
The National-High Violet
The Flaming Lips- Embryonic
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds--Dig!Lazarus, Dig! (Honestly, the best thing ever out of the Great Penal Colony)
The Low Anthem- Oh My God Charlie Darwin
Pink Floyd--A Saucerful of Secrets

Hopefully, all of the above are exceedingly gay.

Listening to Soundgarden - Superunknown. Speaking of which, my list of 33 favorite records came to an abrupt halt, so I might as well continue here. Still chronologically.

16. Soundgarden - Superunknown (1994). What a coincidence! Heavy metal never really appealed to me - still doesn't - but back in 1994 this monster showed its gloomy face, and somehow won me over. It's a five-star masterpiece in my universe with all its rage and doom, and nothing is heavier and doomier than this one:
4th of July

17. Sebadoh - Bakesale (1994). One of lo-fi indie rock's most monumental records. Perhaps because it's not all that lo-fi anymore, perhaps because Eric Gaffney - the most excentric (read: crazy) songwriter of the three main members - had left the band, which meant that this album was chock full of actual songs courtesy of Lou Barlow and Jason Loewenstein and one from third member Bob Fay. With 15 songs in about 40 minutes, it's short, bitter and to the point, and it's utterly brilliant. Lou Barlow delivers some of his finest melancholic songs ever, while Lowenstein's usual fury is spot on. Especially on this one:
Careful

18. PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love (1995). Her transition from furious siren to a more mellow (well, not exactly mellow, but you know what I mean hopefully) artist. This is where she caught my ear. This one has it all; the blistering guitar attack of 'Meet Ze Monsta' and 'Long Snake Moan', the creepy 'Down by the Water', the poppy 'Send His Love to Me', the disturbing but pretty 'C'mon Billy' and the strange, unnerving ballads 'Teclo' and 'The Dancer'. Really a fantastic album, my favorite of hers. The opening 'mm-hm' of this track is legendary:
Long Snake Moan

19. Radiohead - The Bends (1995). This album was the beginning of a serious Radiohead-mania for me. I enjoyed opening single 'High & Dry', but what really lured me in was the majestic ballad 'Fake Plastic Trees'. On the strengths of these two singles I got the album and was blown away. 'The Bends' may not have the excentricity of later-era Radiohead, but what it lacks in creativity, it delivers in straightforward pop rock songs. The singles are all well known and loved, but the perhaps strongest track on the album is this beauty:
Black Star

20. Teenage Fanclub - Grand Prix (1995). Best band in the world. Period. And "Grand Prix" is the collection of songs to rival earlier mentioned Go-Betweens' "16 Lovers Lane" as best pop album in the universe. There's nothing much to say about this one, it's just gorgeous songs with perfect harmonies and jangly guitars, spiced up with a slight melancholia. As with The Posies, I don't understand why Teenage Fanclub never hit the big commercial waves - they've got it all! Oh well.

So what do y'all think of this list?

50 Greatest Guitar Solos

I can't say I'm the god of knowledge when it comes to music, especially compared to the top posters in this thread, but what does it really matter? music is more about taste anyway.

My Personal favorites from the list is Matt Bellamy (As he says in the commentbox, even a guitar master class wouldn't help us understand how he does it), Slash, Eddie Van Halen and Brian May. They are all badass, especially Slash..! Whether they are the best or not I will leave for other to judge, this is just my humble opinion.

Here is the top 20 from that list:

20. Stone Roses - 'I Am The Resurrection'

19. Muse - 'Stockholm Syndrome'

18. Queen - 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

17. Michael Jackson - 'Beat It'

16. The Eagles - 'Hotel California'

15. Led Zeppelin - 'Communication Breakdown'

14. Oasis - 'Live Forever'

13. The Rolling Stones - 'Sympathy For The Devil'

12. Neil Young - 'Hey Hey My My'

11. Deep Purple - 'Highway Star'

10. Pink Floyd - 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'

9. Radiohead - 'Paranoid Android'

8. Chuck Berry - 'Johnny B. Good'

7. Radiohead - 'The Bends'

6. Nirvana - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'

5. Muse - 'Knights Of Cydonia'

4. Rage Against The Machine - 'Killing In The Name'

3. Jimi Hendrix - 'All Along The Watchtower'

2. Led Zeppelin - 'Stairway To Heaven'

1. Guns N' Roses - 'Sweet Child O' Mine'

I intended to write the whole list for you guys to scroll through, But I was tired after the first 20, So stopped there and reversed it in order make it a countdown. Not that it matters, there's nothing here that doesn't appear in the link of course.

Any way as you will see in the link a great deal of these solos are from specific live concerts. No surprise there either, only mentioned it to prevent anybody from search for the songs and end up with the studio version.

Add to that: Rush--The Spirit of Radio

Top 2 not mentioned, and should be above at least half if not all of those mentioned:

Pink Floyd ~ Comfortably Numb
Jane's Addiction ~ Three Days

Purple Rain as low as 36 is a travesty too.

Before I forget I need to add Prince to my list of personal favorites, don't know how I failed to mention him, he's truly amazing with a guitar.

Not trying to sound like i Know it all, but for me Comfortably Numb is also the obvious miss on the list (but then again who wouldn't think that..?).

By the way I never really given Jane's Addiction a good listen before, have to say I like the build up in that guitar solo, although I didn't really appreciate the lead vocal (not that i matters in this context).

Xiu Xiu

They can be tragic
They can be deranged and catchy
They can occasionally not be TOO depressing but on the other hand...
They can be disturbing
They can do some really good covers too

A pity that as they've developed they've padded the sound out; I think the stark, bleak emptiness of the early records really made the gamelan stuff more jarring. I had almost forgotten about them, but that was a foolish thing to do, for "A Promise", "Fabulous Muscles", "*** Patrol" and "Knife Play" are all great.

Three Days is a seriously good piece of music.

Floyd's One of These Days should be added to the list too.
