With every passing day, I think the bolded section is true. Tomorrow we'll have a pretty good idea of whether today was due to his untimely mechanical, or if he's just not good.

Contador's no longer good enough to win the race in normal circumstances. If Froome is not ready, the TDF is going to be The Great Nairo Quintana Show.

Normal circumstances refers to the level they have at the Tour, which isn't comparable to any of the one week races. Quintana has been strong in 2013 and 2015 and will likely be stronger this year.
Meanwhile, Contador last displayed a level of riding at the Tour that would certainly put away Quintana... all the way back in 2009.

Quintana is getting and age to get his best level, although he can improve still a little, he is young. so, of course he is better year by year.
Anyway toay, although the climb wanst very hard, he couldn rop Zakarin, so this is not a superlevel despite Zakarin level in this kind of races is really high.
if tomorrow Quintana is better in the ITT than Uran, all his rivals should shiver.
But I think Froome will put to him 30 seconds.

Back in '09 TdF-wise, but TdF-form-wise, there's a case to be made that Bertie's '14 form was his recent-history's best. We'll never know. Froome, we know: he's the man to beat. Nairito looks strong right now, improved ITT, if his team is as good as Sky's or not too far behind, he has a real shot. Team tactics will play a huge role, rest-day discussions between DS may create alliances, in any case, this could be a TdF for the ages if the three of them are 100%.

100% agree. I think Catalunya gave us an idea of how important tactics will be. Contador burned far too much energy trying to chase down attacks on his own--which I think cost him the overall. Whoever is on form and rides the best tactical race (and frankly has a strong team to chase down attacks), will win. I don't think being the strongest will be enough...not with this many top riders shooting for the win.

Quintana does one big tactical mistake in the tour 2015 "what a coward"
Quintana doesnt attack when he isnt in top shape "what a wheel sucker"
Quintana wins a stage because of a jury decision "what a whiner"
Quintana does a great attack "meh nothing special anything else would have been a disappointment."
According to some people here it doesnt matter what someone does, it's always wrong. If a specific, Spanish cyclist would make a big tactical mistake everyone would say "things like that can happen"
If he doesnt attack when he isnt in top shape "everything else would be stupid"
And if he would win a stage because of a jury decision still nobody would blame him.
Meanwhile whenever he attacks we can read what a hero he is.
I'm not saying this specific Spanish cyclist who's initials might or might not be AC doesn't deserve his fame I'm just saying it annoys me that riders like Quintana get disliked no matter what they do, just because the fans don't like him.

Would be impressive if he can win another WT stage race before the tour. If he manages to win he would have won every WT stage race in spring except Paris Nice, which afaik he never entered as the team's leader. Weren't there some people last year who accused him of not trying to win the races he enters?
