Two points:
1. Debating Chicken's 2007 Tour performance is impossible in this forum.
. Naturally at just 24 Alberto faded on Aubisque under the onslaught.
2. Pantani was on a different planet uphill compared to any rider I have seen including Contador. Different era sure but nothing compares to Pantani's long range demolition of Jan Ullrich on the stage to Les Deux Alpes in the 1998 Tour and his domination of the 1999 Giro before the start of his tragedy. To group Contador with Pantani is unfair to the latter IMO.

The Chicken destroyed all and sundry in that Tour. That shouldn't really be up for debate.CyclingNews said:"Three minutes is too much," stated Discovery Team Manager Johan Bruyneel to Jean-François Quénet of Cyclingnews. "Alberto did all he could, we must accept the defeat. It will be necessary to go flat-out in the time trial because we never know."
