I thin it's smart of Quintana to build his season up slowly. Obviously 2017 was a huge *** up for him, but the worrying thing would be that he missed his peak in 2016 too in the Tour. I'm pretty sure a more traditional build up with the Dauphine would do him well.

He'll have a great team in the mountains, and I don't doubt Valverde's support. Landa is a bit of a wildcard honestly, but so much depends on how the cobbles stage goes.

If anything is gonna hurt Quintana's chances at the Tour it's gonna be a team that's probably gonna be a little light on rouleurs. Cobbles are a huge wild card, especially if they're wet. They also come pretty late into the Tour. Man I hate that that stage is the same date as the World Cup final and the Wimbledon final.

The WC final wont be a problem at all, its much later I think
Wimbledon may be another problem, but what an insane sports day. I don't even care for Tennis tho, but its still pretty awesome IMO

WC final is Moskow and starts at 18.00 local time, but I'm not sure what time that is here with DST...

Yet it was Quintana wanting to do the Giro/Tour double
Don't think that's true. His father said otherwise.
His father might have had some beers in his head at the moment! :D

I read and follow Quintana and I feel it was his idea.

At the end of the day it is a team work and everyone has to accept defeat in order to get up, learn and try again. No need to point fingers at anyone. That is not the right approach.

Quintana was making all sorts of comments to the Spanish speaking media about doing the Giro/Tour double and really wanting to do both. I would be shocked if he father was making those comments because Quintana basically screwed up.

I must admit I am growing a little tired on Quintana lately. We heard all the talk about him wanting the double, then now its Unzues fault for pushing him too hard? Please...

Idc, I just hope he shows up in the Tour in actually great shape for once.
At least the list of consecutive Tour disasters isn't as long as Contador's ended up being.

Lol, I was thinking of SeriousSam, so I checked the odds out for the Tour win (without Froome), and while Quintana is the 2nd favourite behind Porte (odds 3 vs. 4), Dumoulin is as low as 5.5  (bet365, it was just a quick check)

I'd probably rate him as weak favourite, just ahead of Nibali, Porte and Bardet, but it'd be so hilarious if Landa wins :D That would actually be pretty bad for Nairo, I think.

It would be hilarious if Landa wins, and that may very well force Quintana out of Movistar by the end of the year. What would be crazier, but definitely very possible is if Valverde ends up higher in GC than either Quintana or Landa.

I don't know if hilarious is the right word. Landa is no pushover and all indications are that he will have a free role, so it wouldn't be that surprising if he ended up being Movistar's best placed rider.

What would be hilarious is if Valverde finished ahead of Quintana and Landa, what with Valverde's long history of failure at the Tour and all. I'm still puzzled why so many expect him to do well now that he's approaching 40...

I only think a couple expect him to do well in the Tour. :)
You might find plenty who expect him to do real well in the spring, Vuelta, and Worlds.

Did you saw him ride recently? Guy finished 4th, 3rd, and 6th (while riding for Quintana) in his last three Tours he finished. He seems to be on very top of his game, nevermind his age (remember Horner). So tell me what would be so hilarious about him finishing ahead of Quintana and Landa?

And finished 6th riding the Giro before and a heavy schedule that year. Which pits in perspective Quintana's double attempt when Valverde did a lot better with the triple.

Plus with maybe Froome gone people could just look at Quintana and Lands more than Valverde.

Valverde's failure at the Tour? Of all the Tours he's finished (and yes he's abanonded 3 with injuries, two knee and one collarbone) he's only finished outside the top 10 ONCE and that was 2012 in his first GT after his ban. In 2016 he raced all 3 Grand Tours finishing 3rd at the Giro, 6th at the Tour, and 12th at la Vuelta. Looking at that he did much better in racing not just the Giro/Tour double, but the triple than what Quintana did in the double.

Hey Valverde is a very special rider BUT he is not a GT specialist , Quintana is that and he has more chance to win leotur not once but multiple times

That is exactly why Valverde's not just Giro/Tour double, but his Giro/Tour/Vuelta triple is so impressive. His Giro/Tour double wasn't that far off Contador's attempt (who is a GT specialist), whereas Quintana's (also a GT specialist) was a disaster. What makes Quintana's even more of a disaster is he's a good bit younger as well. Contador at 32 Giro - 1st, Tour - 5th. Valverde at a 36 Giro - 3rd, Tour - 6th, then add Vuelta - 12th. Quintana at 27 Giro - 2nd, Tour -12th.
Valverde is more of a classics specialist if you are going to categorize him as something other than an all rounder.

I wouldn't say that a rider who won 1 GT and podium 7 others (including all 3) is not a GT specialist! I agree that Quintana has more chance than him, but to say that it would be hilarious if Valverde finishes ahead of Quintana and especially Landa is way too much!
