To me, as repeated several times, he has a problem with his program. Diet and training. The only good thing about his training around his home is the altitude. Everything else looks horrible. Social events, poor diet, lack of racing, etc.
Everytime a see him is on social events and with too many friends. Next we see him being a bit thicker than he used to be. At the beginning we thought it was the winter clothing. After that there was some lack of racing, due to focusing on solely the Tour. I think that made it worse. When I saw him in the Tour of Suisse I couldn't believe my eyes when he showed up. Next I couldn't believe he was climbing that well in Suisse. Really, he is that talented. But of course I knew he was going to fail in the Tour because you have to be 100% top notch, as we have seen. I told my wife and She told me I was being so negative. But I found it hard to believe that he was going to be like in 2013 or 2015. I was so upset.
I don't think he is going to be the next Andy Schleck. Besides he is still climbing much better than Schleck on his decline. Much better. Those comments about peaking early and stuff, I don't buy it. Natural talented just don't disappear like that unless there is something physically wrong with you like an illness.
Some people trying to downplay him all the time was annoying to me. Because I knew that he was very talented but at the same time I knew that Quintana was not being very professional so there was a concern for failure.
Last but not least, I think a change of teams will be a good start. He needs a new environment with new coaches. Money of the contract should be the least of his concerns right now if you ask me. He should focus on righting the path of becoming again what he once was.
My 2 cents!
