He mentions what I did, about Denver being good at holding leads. That is, jumping out to a 10 point lead, which seems like more than two TD's, and the other team is forced to play their game to catch-up. As I said before, if this happens to Seattle, and Denver is ahead by double digits in the 2nd half, I don't see Seattle winning without some lucky bounces or turnovers.

He also subtly asks a question I wonder what people's response is: If Seattle is down in the 4th quarter by more than 8 points, do you think Russell Wilson can lead the Seahawks to victory?

Yes, I definitely do. They came back from big deficits in both playoff games last year (down twenty to AT late in the 3d quarter), and they did it twice during the RS this year when it appeared they were going to be upset. Mostly on Wilson’s passing. They overcame a ten point lead against a very good 49er defense in the NFC championship game.

I think a lot of people have forgotten that at the end of last year their offense was frightening, scoring 150 points in three games. Obviously that was a flukish run, and one that happened a year ago. But the composition of the team is pretty much the same this year, and to do that even as an outlier, you have to be working off a pretty good base. Can anyone imagine AZ or CA scoring 50 points in even one game?

The big question for me is, how good is Denver’s defense? It was pretty weak for much of the RS, getting away with it because the offense scored so many points. They seemed to be much better in the postseason, shutting down two of the best QBs in the league for three quarters, but are they really better? They have lost Von Miller and some other key players, and neither SD nor NE was capable of testing their rushing defense the way SE will.

Favre, another 1-time SB winner, feels Manning’s pain:

If people don't mention me in the top tier, well, what matters is what I think and what players that played with me think."

The first SB is always the best.

The first one I saw, the first ever, was ranked only 35th here. But I guess Max McGee was Foxxy’s kind of player:

Gil Brandt's take: "The Packer receivers, Boyd Dowler and Max McGee, were in the old locker rooms there at the L.A. Coliseum before the game. McGee says to Dowler, 'Hey, you can't come out of the game. I can't play today. I was out all night and got in at 7 a.m.' Well, of course Dowler gets knocked out and McGee comes in and catches that slant for a big touchdown."

McGee would go on to finish with seven catches for 138 yards.

The 49ers had two of the bottom five worst, including the worst of all, which is high praise, because the worst SBs were ones in which one team was dominating the other.

My own choice for the best ever, Broncos-GB, only came in 11th. And can you guess which one was ranked 1st? I wouldn’t have, it wasn’t that close at the end, but it was a great game in many respects, a classic matchup between two dynasties at the time. Obviously, there are many possible factors that can go into a ranking other than how exciting the game was. The Jets-Colts game that set up the merger was ranked 3d.

Btw, Foxxy, did you know that the first three SBs Montana played, the opposing QB was MVP for the regular season that year? In his fourth and last, Montana himself was MVP, and the QB he faced, Elway, had been MVP two years earlier. So Montana faced 4 MVP QBs in SBs, and of course beat them all; their teams scored a combined just 63 points. Those MVP QBs (two of them HOFers) combined for 3 TD passes and 7 interceptions vs. 11-0 for Montana. That's a record of sorts that probably won't be broken. (Though Bradshaw faced an MVP in one SB, Tarkenton, and MVPs in two AFC championships, Stabler and Earl Campbell).

I had me some Skittles and the wuz fine. Seattle's offense posts 300 yds passing and New Jersey feels the seismic event.

NFL.com and Bleacher Report have some good updated articles.

Here's a very good X's and O's article from Bleacher Report on what to look for in the game.

Pretty good read. One thing they did not mention in the run game for SEA was use of heavy set to establish the run game. Not just 2 TEs, but an extra OL (Bailey or Bowie) as a TE. SEA used that a lot in the last game vs SF, but the article did not say anything about it. Instead the article used an example from the last Rams game. Not the same. I don't know if SEA will use that set vs DEN, but if they do I expect them to do something new out of it... like a quick pass to Harvin.

Any thoughts on the "entertainment" portion of this year's Super Bowl?

Singing the Star Spangled Banner this year: Renee Fleming. (It's my understanding this is the very first time the anthem will be sung by a soprano opera singer, can't wait to hear what she does with it.)

Halftime show: Bruno Mars (don't know anything about him), and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. (Liked them way back when, but didn't know they were still around. [Thought half of them had OD'd back in the 90s.]) Should be interesting, at any rate.

Alternate entertainment if the game gets to be too boring: The Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet, The Kitten Bowl on the Hallmark Channel. (I have no favorites between these two, they'll all be just way too cute.)

Studying Seattle all season I'm not sure if Harvin is more useful as a pass decoy or actual receiver. Would think they'd try something bold early with him and then establish rhythm that is reliable. As much as I'd like to see him be effective and the Seahawk party line is: he's a full go, he has yet to take several solid hits and remain playable. They'd be smart not to find out too early exactly how much punishment he can take and misdirect with that asset.

You're correct about the run set. And just when a defense keys on that something can happen down field...

They should fly in Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Eric Adams or Michael Kiske next year. Very good falsetto singers, and they make awesome music with their bands...
We have yet to have some great metal at the SB.

A couple of them I have not heard of, but still, how could you have not mentioned my main man Geoff Tate?

Still, we can only keep on dreaming...

If you heard of Tate (good :)), you should listen to Kiske... Unluckily he had enough of metal after four alben with Helloween. If he kept going he would own the world today. He was only 19 back then.
Listen to "Keeper of the seven keys Part I & II". He´s a legend here...

I guess you know Dickinson (Maiden) and Halford (Priest). Adams is from Manowar. Ok they sometimes suck, but they have some nuggets too. And Adams is undervalued...

To Admin Alpe: This is not off topic, since we talk of future SB singers. ;)

I predict Seattle. Forget Greatest offence vs greatest defense. Russel Wilson and co >>> Denver D and they will put up points.

someone mad an interesting point that sherman had cleverly diverted attention from the seahawks constant issue with drug tests with his mad out burst at the end of the last game and the mind games played since.

Good, because that's my pick, too, meaning you can't catch me. :D

For me the big question mark is Denver's defense. They were pretty weak most of the season, but got away with it because of the high scoring offense. In the postseason they have looked much better, shutting down two of the best QBs in the league, at least for three quarters. Is that a fluke, or have they really gotten better? Remember, they lost Von Miller and some other key players.

I don't think their run defense has been tested as it will be by the Beast. Even if Wilson has a poor showing, gets sacked several times, SE should be able to eat up the clock to some extent, move the ball enough to score a little, and with their defense keep the game fairly close. But to win, Wilson will have to have a decent game, probably make some big passes off play action. And don't forget he's a very good runner, really in a class with Kaepernick. He hasn't done all that much recently, but for just that reason it wouldn't surprise me if SE tries some plays of that kind.

Most of you probably heard Manning won his 5th MVP, though of course some idiot had to vote for Brady, so it wasn't unanimous. And 10/50 voted for McCoy over Manning for offensive player of the year.

Riverboat Ron is coach of the year, and Kuechly was defensive POY, so some consolation for CA not advancing in the playoffs. Andy Reid was runner-up coach. Rivers was comeback of the year. I could see RG3 winning that award next year.

Don't want to jinx it, but wow, the Broncos have been about as flat as this year's commercials. (The latter have been just awful so far, I'm still waiting for an amusing ad.)

Foxxy-the second half will be tough for both teams.
Like I said earlier, the Beast is coming. Russell Wilson can play, too.

Ok that wasn't a bad halftime show once RHCP rolled in.

I was really crying for "under the bridge" though.

As for the Football, ball game.

At 36-0 I can't even imagine what could happen at this point in order for the Broncos to win, and I hate getting ahead of myself. But geeez, stick a fork in them, they're done.

I'm happy for the 'Hawks, but this game has been so anticlimactic... I was hoping for a lot more competition.

I told you we had offense.

Russell Wilson didn't even break a sweat.

Payton's Legacy? Losing end of the most lopsided Super Bowl in history setting a Super Bowl completion record? now that is a trivia question of the future.
