And one can argue Joe Namath doesn't. Big time player in a huge game, but after that his career wavered, lots of bad games, bad seasons as he aged and was banged up.
On the contrary, I think Broadway Joe is very deserving. During his 5 AFL seasons, he was a 2-time MVP leading the league in passing yds & TDs. After the AFL-NFL merger, he was the first QB to throw for 4,000 yds (14 game season back then). And of course, the high point of his career was the victory & MVP over the Colts in SB III - which was the first SB victory for an AFL franchise. Remember the Colts were favored by a whopping 18 pts (they were considered the greatest team in NFL history that season), where Broadway Joe made the famous "I guarantee it" victory prediction statement that still follows his reputation some 55 yrs later.

All joking aside, I always felt it was a combination of things, and that may have been one of them.
  • Gross overconfidence.
  • A very focused Jets team.
  • The fact Schula sat Unitas late in the season, even when he was healthy, because Morrall had been playing great (but was terrible/hungover in the SB).
  • Namath also said the Colts D were like statues, making blocking calls and audibles very easy at the line of scrimmage.
  • Bubba Smith later said the plays they were calling were predictable as could be. So bad, he even suspected it was on purpose, which made Shula very upset.
  • I also think the Jets may have either stole the Colts signals, or figured them out early in the game. I don't mean stole like stole the playbook physically. I believe Richard Sherman said in SB XLVIII the Seahawk D figured out pretty much what plays the Broncos were mostly going to run by just being smart, focused, deciphering audibles, etc. That may have happened in SB III as well.

Most interesting games:

NYJ@MIN - If the Jets have anything to show, now is the time. In London. Can the Vikings, with Sam Darnold, really go to 5-0? JJ who?
BAL@CIN - One of these teams will show they are for real. I think it's the Ravens.
BUF@HOU - Last week just occasional blitzing from the Ravens disrupted Josh Allen. Can Hou do the same?
CLE@WAS - If the Commanders win they go 4-1, and the Browns 1-4. Assuming this happens, and unless Watson has a great game, at what point do the Browns bench him? I know, Joe Flacco has left the building.
LVR@DEN - Broncos haven't beat the Raiders in aeons, but here is their best chance. Denver playing well, Raiders completely banged up, star WR has a tantrum and won't play.
DAL@PIT - If the Steelers win, does Justin Fields just become the starter? This would mean Dallas goes to 2-3.

NO@KC - Which Saints team shows up? And will the KC offense ever come alive? This could be a somewhat high scoring game, but something tells me it won't, and KC will win, like 24-23.

Ravens and Vikings look real at the moment. be surprised if either team lost. Commanders should win on current form. Once again Kansas will probably do enough to win. Be surprised if the Cowboys beat the Steelers at home and the Cowboys have some injuries on their shaky defense. 49ers and Cardinals will be interesting if the 49ers run defense lets Conner run and Murray. 49ers defense looked better last week against the woeful Patriots offense.. Buffalo and Houston should be a good one.

Not the way I’d want Rodgers to go out but I think either Alpe or Nomad called it.
Rodgers came back out after looking to injure his left leg and was in the middle of going into the medical tent when Vikings got flagged for roughing the kicker. He then led Jets down for a touchdown starting at their own 2 or 3 yard line and even helped a Viking off the ground at one point after his “injury”. The game was a lot closer than I thought but the Jets defense couldn’t overcome the offense’s shortcomings. I wonder what was going on and how his leg is holding up, especially if he just started running on adrenaline. Vikings with an ugly win by their offense to stay 5-0.

Wow...Broncos destroy the Raiders! Impressive performance by Nix: 206 yds, 2 TD passes/no picks & a rushing TD!

Dominating Bronco D - shutting down the Raider run game & Minshew to a dismal 136 yds with 2 picks - including a 100 yd pick-6 by Surtain II! It looks like neither Minshew nor O'Connell is the answer for the Raiders moving forward. Pierce better figure this out or he'll be a short-term coach looking for a job.

With about a third of the season in, who would have thought the Broncos, breaking in a rookie QB, would be 3-2 while the Jets with a future HoFer would be 2-3. Lol.

The people of Pittsburgh like to say things like being "steel town tough" and yet here they are with a weather delay.
It's football.
Like jmdirt said, it's liability if a fan is struck by lightning. That's obviously one of the drawbacks not having a dome or retractable roof. Nonetheless, with the delay it's looks like this game is going to go way past midnight - I'm going to have to make some coffee. Lol.

Rodgers wasn't benched, but choked the game away at the end. What a desperate pass, when it didn't need to be forced like that. Jets still relying way too much on their defense.

I loved Rich Eisen's Monty Python reference when Rodgers came back to play, "'tis merely a flesh wound." :D
Might not have been benched but Gilmore’s eyes went wide and he had a smile on his face when he saw Rodgers throw him the ball.

49ers blow another good 4th quarter lead. Seems to me the 49ers are edging closer to a rebuild. Their defense has been getting worse since the SB loss in 2019 and that was two DC's ago. They have plenty of offense but in the red zone have looked lost without CMC. Didn't help that their kicker also went down. They have to play the Hawks on Thursday then Kansas and the Cowboys. That stretch of games might decide their playoff chances as each loss makes the margin for more losses even narrower and they still have to play the Lions, Bills and Packers. As of now they are 0-2 in their divisional games as well. The only thing in the 49er favor is that three of the four NFC West teams have lost in the past two weeks.

Flacco still playing better than Watson ! The Browns look terrible, maybe even the Patriots look better. Good win for the Giants. Giants and Jones seem to be improving. Off season hype about the Jets is starting to fade. Rams drop to 1-4

Washington and the Vikings keep winning which also makes it harder for the 49ers. Bills and Texans was an entertaining game as was the Bengals game. Bengals will be gutted after that loss. Jags finally got a win. Cowboys needed that win.

Chiefs defense continues to be elite while their offense looked better but still settling for field goals. Not that it matters with how dominate their defense is. Saints had some big plays they missed but Chiefs were blanketing almost everything while Carr was fighting for his life. It’s good the game didn’t come down to the missed DPI on Saints followed up with the missed Butker field goal. Hunt should grow into a bigger weapon as Chiefs look like they’ll continue the run and quick plays. Chiefs still look like the favorite in the AFC.

So, ownership is blaming Saleh for the team's poor start despite Rodgers being healthy & playing. This should be an easy one to evaluate: If the team turns it around & starts winning then Saleh was the problem. If not & the team continues to struggle, then this is on Rodgers & the Jets need to move on from him.
