Peter Schrager (who strikes me as off-putting, a bit of a know-it-all. I don't think I'd even want to have a beer with the guy), thinks the Steelers could pursue Kirk Cousins if they can't sign Rodgers. Oh sure. Kirk Cousins. While younger than Rodgers, he's basically at this point in his long career another geriatric, immobile relic, who also suffered a severe injury recently and is one play from a career ending hit. Oh, and $40m is what they would pay. And if he doesn't have it, gets hurt, or even cut? A $75m dead cap hit!!!

All I can repeatedly think about is how on earth did the Steelers ever let Justin Fields walk out the door? I'm not saying Fields will be an all pro. People that hyped him as the next Lamar weren't being fair to him, but he's young, a prototypical future dual-threat QB, played his best ball last year for them, has a very positive attitude, and the Jets absolutely stole him at a mere $20m per year. And it was a team friendly deal - the cap hit is just $8m this year!!! At the very worst Fields could have been the Steelers bridge QB starter a couple seasons until they found/groomed their future guy. I mean, what else did they think was going to happen? Cam Ward would fall to them in the draft? They could make a trade for Patrick Mahomes? I can't possibly comprehend what their plan was. Unreal how foolish Pittsburgh was with Fields.

Apparently the Steelers must see Fields as a journeyman backup & not a capable starter despite the improvement he showed in completion pct & QB rtg in those 6 starts (these were areas that killed Fields at Chicago). Granted, he's the least developed passer out of the dual-threat starters out there & was a disaster at times in Chicago, but you're right - he played his best ball for the Steelers.

And the Steelers didn't seem interested in a franchise QB & potential rookie-year starter. They could have drafted Dart with the 21st pick but instead took a DT. That left them not drafting a QB until the 6th rd. Despite the endorsement by Big Ben & Gruden, Howard had a poor showing at the Combine revealing some concerns with arm strength, velocity, throwing mechanics, etc (NFL. com scouting site has him rated only at 5.90 = "Average Backup").

What I still don't understand is the Steeler's infatuation with Rodgers? Is it because he made it through an entire 17 game season on the repaired Achilles injury last year? Granted, that was a surprise but it doesn't change the fact that Rodgers at 41 is an aging QB who's become immobile & injury prone with his best days behind him. And the Jets were 5-12. Lol

Didn't he say the same thing about Alex Smith? Or was it Kaepernick? Scott Tolzein?!

Regarding Howard, he actually played quite well in clutch, big games this past season. But he still has "backup NFL QB" written all over him. Not much different than Ewers, honestly.

Jets are apparently all-in on Fields, and he reportedly has been working quite hard on improving his game already. Tyrod Taylor says he's there entirely to support Fields, and the Jets didn't even bother drafting a QB. They are going to struggle in that division, but I think there's chance for tangible improvement, certainly over the raging dumpster fire they were in the "Aaron Rodgers era".

What a surprise. I thought they would have traded Levis once they drafted Ward. They have Brandon Allen & Tim Boyle as experienced backups, and if Ward for some reason wasn't ready to start, one of these backups could start.

Well, he's going to have to win...period. They were 5-12 last year barely ahead of the hapless Patriots at 4-13. The last time the Jets made the playoffs was 2010 when Rex Ryan was the coach & Mark Sanchez at the helm (only 5 teams in the history of the NFL have had longer playoff droughts).

And Fields couldn't win at Chicago: In 3 seasons & 38 starts, he was 10-28 & last in the division each year. There will be no break-in period for him. He's not a rookie but has been in the league for 4 yrs now. He'll have to do what Mayfield has done in Tampa - win right off the bat. And that will be a tough division especially if the Patriots show improvement with Vrabel in charge.

Bluster. Unless Ward just doesn't have it at all through camp and the preseason, he will start week 1. I also think there's a chance Levis will be drafted now even sooner, after the GM making it sound like he's capable of being a starter. Maybe the Steelers will trade for him?!

I actually think there's a 50% chance Jaxon Dart starts week 1 for the Giants. Wilson is old, a bit of a headcase, and Winston is basically washed, and has never been clutch. A few impressive drives and throws, followed by an interception right into a defender's arms at the worst possible time. His entire career.

As to Fields and the Jets, I think what honestly needs to happen is they have got to show improvement, look competitive, not make stupid mistakes, and at the end of the season look like in 2026 they could make a splash and make the playoffs. Even if they still finish about 7-10. I'm not saying 2025 is a mulligan, but they (like the Raiders) are indeed in a tough division, still have holes to fill, and I think there's going to be a little slack for a new coach and GM during a rebuild. But if they get to week 14, and look like they are 4-10, don't have it together as a team, lose a few bad games, Fields looks like he did in Chicago, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Woody just flush it all again.

No matter what happens, I think both Ben Johnson in Chicago, and Pete Carroll in LV are safe for this coming year. Very likely Mike Vrabel as well. Aaron Glenn, Liam Coen, Kellen Moore and Brian Schottenheimer will be on shorter leashes. They may not get fired after a bad season, but I can see much of their team being taken out of their hands if their teams don't look good.

As to Justin Herbert, right now his career looks like he's the next Jameis Winston.

I'm not surprised, and I'm happy for him. I wrote a bit back about all the injuries he's had, and it's more than people realize. That 2016 leg break was his best chance to get to the big dance. The following year started so-so, then he suffered a transverse fracture in his back and somehow played through it. This same injury knocked Tony Romo, Jameis Winston and others out for several games. Carr was never the same after that. He just wasn't as mobile after the leg break, and took less chances when he ran after the back injury, trying to make up for it with his arm. Too bad he didn't play his entire career as a Raider, but so be it.

Saints have three young QBs now on their roster. Shough, Rattler, and Haener. But the job has to be Shough's to lose. Rattler is 0-6 as a starter, and Haener 0-1. Both played mixed in relief of Carr. Rattler more streaky perhaps.

What do you think is wrong with Rattler? He was thee #1 recruit coming out of HS. Played some good college ball at Oklahoma (under Lincoln Riley) & at South Carolina. They say he has an elite arm with one of the quickest releases in all of football (some scouts have compared his arm with Mahomes!). Though he's not a dynamic runner, he's mobile & athletic enough to scramble & take off running. But his 6 starts were absolutely a disaster! More picks than TDs (4/5) & a low QB rating of 70. Plus like you pointed out he couldn't even win one game in those 6 starts. Any hope for this guy?

My short answer is no, I doubt it. Haener looks like a career backup, which is fine. But more was expected of Rattler, for years growing up. I tried watching some of their games, curious about both. My initial thought is Rattler has a chip on his shoulder, and tries to force the ball too much. One of those games he was so bad they benched him for Haener, who looked decent. Jake doesn't have the same arm, but he gets rid of it. So they started Haener the next week, and he then looked bad, and was replaced by Rattler who looked better with some good throws, at least on that one day. If Rattler has a chip on his shoulder, Haener is maybe too relaxed.

If Jake Haener's ceiling is maybe Cooper Rush or Jake Browning. Then Rattler's looks more like Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, or Gardner Minshew. A guy who will start at times, win a few games, but lacks any real consistency. Both guys are still young and could completely turn things around this coming season though.

All of that is why I think the starting job really is Shough's to lose, even though those guys have started games. He has the arm, and gets rid of the ball.

I stopped watching football when they made it into a girly sport by taking away the endzone celebrations, and the sacking of the quarter back celebrations.

Taunting is a part of the game, you have to get into the other teams head, and the more you can screw with them the better the odds become of winning. Plus the crowds loved that stuff.

There were other changes too that spoiled the game.

Probably in about 15 years they'll go to flag football, I can't wait...NOT!

Only A A Ron uses "era" after his name; in his imagination. Probably doing that now in a depravation chamber.

Girly sport? Have you watched WNBA or serious women's football (soccer to you)? They chat and make contact with the best of them.

They're still drilling QBs (check out the legal hit on Murray - knocks his helmet right off!). And look at some of these hits running QBs are putting on the defenders.
