Pittsburgh is a good landing space for Howard.
I was surprised he was even drafted...he's not that good (if he was, his old OC at OSU, Chip Kelly, would have persuaded Carroll to take him over Miller).

If Tomlin goes into this season with Rudolph, Skylar Thompson & Howard as their QBs...I think they're in trouble & not keeping Fields could really bite them.

C'mon, Carroll is going to have to do better than that if plans on coaching a 2nd yr. He's not breaking in a rookie QB - he's got a seasoned veteran who's got a lot left in the tank. He's got an incredible talent at TE - the next Dave Casper. He's got a one man wrecking crew with Crosby. And...now one of the best RBs to come out of college in a long time & a generational talent. With Jeanty you'll have a punishing running game that'll open up the door for play-action passing that'll benefit Smith like crazy. Plus Jeanty can catch the ball with the the best of them. Jeanty is classified as a "workhorse back" - a 3-down give it all back. He's "plug n play" day 1 starter.

Carroll needs to go 8-9 at the very least - preferably 9-8 & a shot at the playoffs. Payton in his first year took the Broncos to 8-9 from 5-12 the previous year, 10-7 & postseason this past year. Last year Harbough did a complete reversal taking the Chargers to 11-6 from 5-12 the year before. This is what Carroll is going to be measured against. Carroll's legacy is on the line as a SB winning coach. He has to win now....no excuses. A 7-10 season would be an utter failure for a coach of his status.
This is all new, top to bottom pretty much. It will all hinge on Geno's protection and Jeanty is as good way to keep defenses off balance to buy time. They have great TEs, like you said. That helps the O-line, Jeanty and passing time if it wall works. If.

Want an example where the GM and head coach make the picks with no meddling from the owners? Look at the Raiders. There was a lot of talk about how Tom Brady helped mentor Shedeur, with private workouts, and Tom is good friends with Prime. Mark Davis also spoke highly of Shedeur, and had been seen talking with Prime in recent months. Raiders fans even thought if Shedeur fell to round 2 or 3, the Raiders would take him for sure. Well, Raiders GM John Spytek, and Pete Carroll, ignored all that, eventually drafting Cam Miller late in the 6th round with a compensatory pick. Miller is, you guessed it, a dual-threat QB.
All you need to experience is what an emotional player like DK Metcalf can do in a game. Avoiding possibly uncontrollable outside interference having even a "developing" QB with a loud mouthpiece would be a nightmare. A costly one if you took him in the first 2 rounds, too.

Some teams accept "distractions", thinking since they are aware of the issue, they can control it. But look at how many teams tried that, with anyone from Terrell Owens to Jeff George to AB. Most failed.

I don't think I'm being pessimistic when I say the Raiders OL just isn't really that good. The back 7 on D is also filled with guys you don't recognize, who arguably many who would not make other team's rosters.

I'll be really surprised if Aaron Rodgers isn't their starting QB this season. I just can't believe they didn't try to fortify their OL for him in the draft or FA. But expect the signing to happen soon. He just didn't want to be "Kirk Cousinsed" and sign before the draft, then find out some young QB dropped to them and they grab that guy.

That doesn't mean I think it will work. I agree it was a huge mistake to let Fields out of the building. At best he would have kept improving, and maybe been a QB to build upon. At worst, he could have been their bridge QB for the next 2-3 years until they find their QB of the future.

With the geriatric, immobile, walking controversy machine that is Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers may have their first losing season in years. Davonte Adams is saying the only reason it hasn't happened is Rodgers is waiting for the Steelers to roll out the red carpet for him. Basically worship him as the savior for their franchise. The irony is Rodgers may ultimately be the guy who gets Tomlin fired.

Upton Stout is really undersized at 5'8" (the average height of a corner is 5'11"). How is he going to match up with these Megatron WRs out there? 6'4" guys with great size, blazing speed & incredible vertical jumps? Maybe he could play at the college level
being that short but is the NFL.

And what's with them drafting a big stiff like Kurtis Rouke? He had ACL surgery in January & may not be even ready for preseason camp. He's not very agile/athletic & is more of a pure pocket passer. The way Lynch hypes on him you'd think this is their franchise QB moving forward. Lol.

Yes an odd choice especially when they still have Mordecai on the roster as QB3. I thought the 49ers wasted a few picks on day 3. A rebuilding team with many needs shouldn't be wasting picks in the draft They had 11 picks and at least three look like they will never see the field. A shame as they did pretty well in the first three rounds and it's odd for them because usually they do well in the later rounds. . You can never tell though as there are always surprise rookie busts and players that do something unexpected.

Rob Rang's grading of this draft. Only 3 teams received an "A" - Bills, Raiders & Seahawks. One team received a "D" - Dolphins. The majority of the rest were either B or C. Of course, this is just based on their potential impact at their position and we really won't know until after a few seasons.

Someone explain to me this infatuation that Tomlin has for Rodgers??? Granted, Rodgers was a heck of a QB in his prime. He was big, athletic & had a rocket arm coming out of CAL. He's a SB MVP, league MVP & future HOF. But that was then - at 41 he's a shadow of himself now & can no longer play at a high level. The Achilles rupture was catastrophic & adds to his already declining mobility. When he plays, he looks like he has lingering effects from the several concussions he's had over his career.

John Elway turned in his cleats after 16 yrs at age 38. His body was so badly beaten he could barely walk after a game in his last two seasons. Peyton Manning called it a career at 39 after a serious plantar fasciitis injury in his last season & his poor performance in SB 50 despite pleas by Elway to stick it out one more year. Even Brees had enough of the beating he was taking & called it a career after 20 seasons at age 40.

WTH makes Rodgers think he so much different than these guys? He's no Brady if he thinks he can play well into his 40s & still perform. Lol.

All this crazy passion that the Steelers have for Rodgers just inflates his already big ego. Instead of retiring with dignity, he spends his time whining about how the Jets treated him so poorly. Lol.

A lot of the faces in the Browns front office didn’t look happy Sanders was taken. I think Watson and Pickett will be gone and it’ll be a fight between the two rookies for second string. To make it interesting, Browns need to throw the sink at Rodgers to get him to sign and the team bed the NFL to be on Hard Knocks again.
Well at least Shadeur has solved his problem by firing his Dad and suggesting some misdirection from that camp.
Does that scream "I'm ready and deserve to be Pick Numero Uno!!!" That locker room is going to be rough.

And Indy for Leonard.
Not so good for Richardson:

Leonard has much better accuracy than AR, and as a dual-threat RPO guy, provides the same running threat. Leonard in 4 seasons of college had 37 starts (Duke/Notre Dame,) plus the national championship game appearance vs OSU. AR in 2 seasons at Florida had only 13 starts (with that limited amount of college experience, AR was clearly not ready to come into the league as a 4th OA & expected to perform right away as an undeveloped passer).

I have to admit, this is the first time in memory I look at the entire Raiders draft and it looks like they played it very smart. Several BPA picks, and picked up some guys who can fill holes, including a couple who may have fallen to them. I was concerned Tom Brady would meddle and make calls, but apparently he did nothing, and let John Spytek and Pete make all the picks.

I don't see Flacco starting. Watson I think will spend the entire season on the PUP list (even if total team decision) and be cut after the season.

Riley Leonard has much better...
I too see a NFL prospect in Leonard. He's big, a true dual-threat, and while he needs some work on his passing, there have been plenty more QBs drafted on potential who couldn't pass better than him (like, Richardson). He also has a very positive attitude and seemed extremely grateful to just be drafted. I don't know if Leonard will start early this next season, but with Daniel Jones also on the bench, I think Leonard is in a perfect position to end up their starter whenever he's ready.

I don't truly buy that Shedeur tanked interviews. Maybe one. But otherwise it makes no sense. Especially since the Giants gave him a private workout, and word is they weren't impressed. Raiders also easily could have drafted him but passed multiple times, and he's had connections to them forever. The fact the Raiders took Cam Miller (not well known, but a dual-threat QB) late in the draft was also telling. And in the end Shedeur ended up on the most QB killing franchise in the NFL, which tells you all you need to know there.

They definitely weren't impressed or they wouldn't have taken Dart with their 2nd 1st rd pick (Dart was never projected as a 1st rounder).

If Dart has a good preseason & wins the backup job, there will be tremendous pressure for Wilson to play flawlessly & WIN. Because at the first sign of trouble, I could see Daboll making a change (plus the fans will demand it!).

Final thoughts on some QB "shockers" of this draft.

1) Shedeur Sanders. This is the shocker of all-time shockers. A consensus 1st rd pick with some scouts having him as QB1 plummeting all the way down to the 5th rd! No one saw this comming... no one. I could see him dropping to the 2nd rd (early 3rd in the worst case scenario) but the 5th? Unfathomable. This will be talked about for years to come.

2) Quin Ewers. If it wasn't for the Sanders shocker this would have taken center stage. A projected 2nd/3rd pick free falls all the way down to the 7th rd & the last QB taken. Ewers was a 5-star & thee #1 recruit coming out of HS. His breakout season at Texas was his soph year where he threw the ball exceptional well leading the Longhorns to the playoffs (All Big-12). Last season wasn't statistically as good as the previous year, but still solid again leading the team to the playoffs (he played well enough to keep Arch Manning on the bench). The clincher here is that by declaring early for the draft & foregoing the transfer portal, he gave up ~$6m in NIL money for 7th rd draft money (7th rd picks average only about $4m for rookie 4-yr contract).

3) Tyler Shough. Here's a guy that was deemed by some scouts as having the best arm talent of this class. But due to a horrendous injury history including a fractured leg he played only 1 full season healthy in 6 yrs of college - that being his last season. Though he had a great season throwing the ball & leading Louisville to a bowl game, he was projected anywhere from a low-round pick to an UDFA. Then came his impressive performance at the Combine & his draft stock shot up like a big day on Wall St with the Saints taking him in the 2nd. Depending on how he does in preseason, and the situation with Carr possibly missing all or some of the season, Shough could be the starter on day 1.

Brock Purdy, obviously. But who's going to block for Purdy? SF didn't address their OL at all this off-season, and are expecting Trent Williams to return, and wind the clock back. I also expect a falloff from CMC. I'm sticking with my prediction of the 49ers finishing in last place in that division.

I saw an article combining every single mock draft up until the last day showing where Shedeur would be drafted. He was consistently in the top 3 projected picks for months. In the last few weeks he slowly dropped to 26 overall (ironically, Dart was taken at 25), but still a first round pick. There were comments that in theory, this meant at worst he would have fallen to a QB needy team in the 2nd round. That should have been his floor.

The issue with the Giants is they also have Jameis Winston. So there are two buffers before Drabol has to throw Dart out there if the team struggles.

Regarding Ewers, I thought the Raiders would take him late, but instead took Cam Ward. When you look at the money, he should have done what Carson Beck did and transfer to another school. I'm sure one would have offered him good NIL money. Maybe not at the level of Texas, but someone would have.

The Saints now have three QB prospects. Both Rattler and Haener have been spotty, but mostly look like young guys who need a lot of work, and may never start in the NFL, but certainly belong in the league. Will Slough overtake them? And Carr has to be on his way out. He implied he's rehabbing fine, but this is definitely a warning to him. Play elite this year, or you're done. If he's hurt, I can see Slough beating out Haener and Rattler for the starting job.

Zero surprise about the Commanders new stadium. This was a given from the moment Josh Harris and his team signed the papers buying the team. The NFL absolutely loves Harris, he's everything Dan Snyder wasn't. And even more important, nothing Snyder was.

I think a few of us here (and elsewhere) felt Denver overpaid and overreached with both Greenlaw and Hufanga. Both were/are a risk. Neither have played at the level before their major injury.

It seems that the 49ers were about to select an O line man but then the Raiders went O line with picks 98 and 99. That's how it goes in the draft sometimes. They picked up one in the 7th round who is good against the run supposedly but not in other areas while they just signed a vet to a one year contract. The reason they didn't get a quality o line man in free agency was probably because of the Kittle extension, Purdy contract and the upcoming Warner extension. Also the reason they let so many free agents go to other teams and most of those were well paid. Plus Feliciano retired which hasn't helped. If Williams misses multiple games then it will only be worse for the O line..

49ers were picking in an awkward position at 11 especially when they also had to address the defense which they did, hopefully well. Next year's draft is supposed to be much better for O line players. Rebuilds usually take more than one draft and this looks like a rebuild although some want to quibble over wording. If CMC has another injury prone season, he will be gone as well you would think. They definitely need their core players on the field regularly to have any hope of making the playoffs even with a weak schedule. The problem last year was the divisional games as they only won one of them. The NFC West is now competitive again unlike a few seasons ago when the 49ers were unbeaten in the division two seasons straight.

Carson Beck transfered to Miami for an estimated $4m in NIL dough. I read a report that Ohio St was offering Ewers in the neighborhood of $5 to $6m to transfer (with the departure of Will Howard they were looking for someone of Ewer's caliber to step in - who, btw, originally recruited him). And if Ewers stayed at Texas he'd be in the backup role as Sarkisian has already declared Arch Manning as the starter this year.

It'll be an interesting battle in Dolphin land between Ewers & Wilson for the backup spot...with the loser to the practice squad?
