I was frequently threatened with spanking(flat hand on bottom). I think I might have received it once, though it could also be a false memory. His father though was a real disciplinarian, so much that when my father and his older brother were teens they returned the favor to him. He was extremely religious in a very religious society.

Here in Norway corporal punishment has been illegal for ages, and it has been enforced in the home as well since a supreme court ruling back in 2005, when a guy was found guilty of spanking his children.

Corporal punishment doesn't really work either. It creates more problems than it solves.

From what I read about Palestine,tx where AP is from, it sounds like the way my father had it in in the 30s and 40s.

So for me that part of Texas seems a bit backward.

You only need to go there to confirm what seems to be. Save for the part of Austin that Lance doesn't live in.

Come on, it's not ALL that way. Yeah, lots of rednecks in the ranchland, plenty of trailer parks, Dallas and Houston are a lot of asphalt and concrete, and El Paso is a dump surrounded by dirt. But San Antonio has the famous River Walk. Corpus Christi has lots of beaches and history. there are certainly parts of other towns that are nice, with good people and some Southern comfort in the right areas. The Schlitterbahn is awesome too.

Oldman just wanted to slap the entire state of Texas down with one crisp redneck claim. :D

Well to be fair to Oldman .....ChrisE and Patrick both live there in the greater Houston Area ....they are rednecks? I don't thinks so but hey you can argue with them about it.

Btw--Houston has around a little more than 7 million people living around there. It grows everyday with new folks moving in from all the "blue" states.

Palestine Texas is just blip on the highway with a giant flee market on the north-side of town. It is a place to stop and grab some FAT food and Beer while on your way to Paris. What a place. (don't ask me how in the hell I know that).

Honestly Glenn, you're right. I've had great times in Texas and met great people from Texas. Most of the people I met that I didn't like spent a lot of time telling me they're true Texans and ran down the list of qualifications. The rest were from Phoenix...

In other news.....next up, Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer, dropped after being charged for domestic violence against a woman and infant.

Yea, kinda.

Why can't the ****ing Eagles just lose. Come back twice in a row? They are going to end up playoff bound in their **** division.

I couldn't possibly agree more, since I hate the Iggles. Don't worry though, you won't have to come back on Sunday, you'll have the lead from the start and just run away......:(

Okay, here we go. For Elimination Football® this week, I say Jacksonville and St. Louis will not get to the Super Bowl (to add to my last weeks picks of NY Giants and Cleveland Browns).

For Survival Football™, I say Minnesota will lose this week (to add to my previous picks of Indianapolis, and the NY Jets. I currently have 0 strikes).

For tonight's game:

Survival Loser of the week (up to now zero strikes, waiting for the updates Alpe, had Indy & KC so far); TEN

HFA-System-Picks™ ;); all home teams, except JAX (thus 1st non home pick this year goes to... IND)

Study: Spanking Favored In African-American Households

Republicans and African Americans may not agree on much, but they tend to be on the same page when it comes to spanking, according to a longtime study by the University Of Chicago.
Black Americans are more likely than any other racial group to spank their children, the results showed — and right wingers were right behind them.

“Republicans are more likely than either Democrats or independents to favor spanking,” the website FiveThirtyEight, which analyzed the numbers, added. In addition, 80 percent of born-again Christians support spanking. However, overall support among the rest of the people surveyed was at 65 percent and decreasing. Seventy percent of people surveyed favored spanking as of 2012.

That’s down from 84 percent of the country in 1986, when the University Of Chicago began collecting data for their spanking research. The study also found that the decline in spanking mirrored a decline in religious Americans.

Two years ago, the Pew Research Center reported that a fifth of Americans had no religious affiliations.

In addition, people from the Northeast are less likely to back spanking than Southerners. The study comes as NFL Minnesota Vikings player Adrian Peterson (pictured) deals with child abuse charges for hitting his 4-year-old son with a tree branch. The switch left welts on the boy’s leg and scrotum.

All my stereotypes are true!:D

If it's fine with everyone else I think I'll pick tomorrow. I'm thinking of picking the steelers, but I need to find out what the panthers injury status is. I don't wanna pick Minnesota. That just seems too easy.:D

Well I enjoyed my time in Texas. I lived off and on there since 1994. Unfortunatley I went to Canada for a couple of years or a little less than a couple. When I tried to go back this time they had closed the border...errrrrrrrr I was unable to get employment. Weird like that sometimes.

The most difficult thing to find in Houston is an actual honest to goodness Houstonian! It is almost like trying to find Buffalo in 1970's!

I see Patrick chimed in with Pickup Truck and spit cup smack.

By the way ....how come ChrisE or Patrick have not mentioned the Texans on the thread? Weird.

Don't worry about those two Rednecks errrrrrrrrrrr gents! haha

I can't wait for ChrisE to come on and talk about the Texans. They are 2-0 which is a dam big suprise even if we consider who they played. I figured "start the Carr" was going to go off on them to get revenge for his brothers poor play while in Houston.

Maybe in addition to Elimination, we should play a new game called Exempt. Name the next player to be charged with DV. We’re up to five now by my count, and the season is young. The SB winner might turn out to be the team with the fewest suspended players.

Also, it seems that a new word has been added to the English language: re-deactivated. Or should it be de-reactivated? Hard to keep up with the news. The only thing we haven’t seen yet is a story claiming that Goodell was abused as a child, and it’s affected his stance on the players. Speaking of the devil, I hadn’t realized that his father was Charlie Goodell. You old-timers will remember him as a liberal Republican Senator from NY who spoke out against the war in Vietnam. He was the conservative whipping boy back in those days, in their view the poster boy for everything that was wrong with the party.

I thought of a new twist to add to Elimination that would make it harder, though probably most here would not do it. The two teams you pick each week have to be playing each other. That greatly eliminates your choices, of course, but also forces you to look ahead on the schedule. Anyway, I’m going to do it this week with:

KC and Miami (previous week: NYG, Jax)

Survival – MN (1 strike) – and if the Saints lose again, I’ll retaliate by putting them next on my elimination list. Previous: Miami, NYJ.

The Texans are for real, methinks. Remember, even when they fell apart last year their defense was very good, it only crumbled in the end because the weak offense put so much pressure on them. Indy is not going to have a cakewalk through the division this year, even when they start winning again.

That was just awful. I shut it off when it was 42-0. The worst NFL game I have seen in years. Even my rebuilding Raiders don't lose that bad on their worst day. And Tampa is supposed to have an improved roster this year. Is it too late for the Bucs to ask Greg Schiano and Mark Dominik back?!

It got so bad that former Buccaneers safety Ahmad Black tweeted this during the game:

This is who I got cut from?
— IG: @ahmadblack35

Eric LeGrand, former Rutgers star who signed with the Bucs, but never played due to paralysis and is in a wheelchair, even got in on it:

Y'all need me to suit up Bucs???
— @EricLeGrand52

Ouch!

Best part of the game was Hester's return for a TD, and seeing Deion smiling on the sidelines. That was cool. Mike Smith congratulating a teary-eyed Hester on the sidelines was great to see too.

Aren't you a Saints fan? I still think there's potential for them to win quite a few games this year. But it's going to start with this weekend. It's their first home game, and they have to make a statement I think.

Thanks Amsterhammer for that list. I'm going to create a spreadsheet to help keep track.

Some interesting stats (and great graphics), on NFL.com about this week.

I think I copied that template from you, Alpe?

Any of you anoraks remember a game that featured 10 TDs and no other scores?
