Steelers and Rodgers making the playoffs was worth it to see this game. It looked like it’ll be extremely close with all of the Texans mistakes but they finally pulled away. Their whole team as a whole dominated the Steelers, CJ just can’t repeat all those turnovers he had. On some funny notes; Rodgers has never scored this few points in the playoffs, Tomlin never had less than 14 points in the playoffs, and Steelers haven’t scored less than 10 since 1997. This should be Rodgers final game playing while being the worst quarterback of the week and Tomlin’s last game has to be coming close even if not actually fired.

Nick deserved every second of that!

Ahhh yes, Steve Grogan, the poor stiff who threw the hospital pass to Darryl Stingley, and the good Lord looked kindly upon him, as no one remembers him from that play. They only remember Jack Tatum.

Herbert is just one loss from tying Andy Dalton, to go 0-4 in the playoffs. He's absolutely capable of catching, and passing Dalton. Especially if Harbaugh sticks around as the Chargers coach, in his life's quest of getting Herbert to the HOF. Herbert reminds me a little of Steve DeBerg. Some decent years for the Chiefs, but for a big dude, never did all that much.

In tonight's game, Steelers look about finished. Solid game for Houston, especially their impressive D.
Herbert is much more talented than DeBerg or Dalton ever was. Lol. Basically, Herbert, like Allen, is another TE that can throw the snot out of the ball. If you don't believe me compare their physical traits: Same height & weight (Herbert is actually an inch taller at 6'6"), Herbert is a little faster in the 40 (4.68), same 20 yd shuttle time. Arm strength is basically the same with a slight edge to Allen who can throw a tad bit further (suffice it to say both have cannons). And Herbert is a gunslinger having thrown for that 5000 yd season in his 2nd yr (Allen has never thrown for 5000 - Staffy once & Mahomes has done it twice).

Let's listen to Steve Young who would certainly know about these situations - he says Herbert needs more weapons.

What a drubbing. I can't imagine Rodgers has the stomach to keep repeating this, but maybe his ego is so big, he'll try again with a new team next season (Vikings?).

I think if Tomlin is done, it will be a mutual decision between he and Steeler management to some degree. I just don't see them up and firing him. But he too must be getting a bit tired of this. With no tangible QB to build around, they are just floating out there doing the same thing year after year.

Steelers were lucky to make the playoffs and the game was fairly predictable based on what the Texans have done lately. Steelers couldn't get anything going on offense and looked a lot like the Chargers offense without the Herbert scrambles. Steelers getting Metcalf back made no difference. Be surprised if Rodgers plays another season although the way he was talking about Rivers, who knows ? That was as far as I expected the Steelers to go.

Good time for the Steelers to move on from Tomlin like Harbaugh at the Ravens, and they need more play makers on offense as well as a younger more dynamic QB.

If there was ever a time for the Steelers to go a new direction, and even accept a rebuild, it's now.

This game could have been worse. CJ didn't have the best game, though he did make some good throws and kept drives going as the game went along. But the score easily could have been 20-6 at halftime. Still, his QBR was a very high 62.4, however ESPN's computers figure that.

Early thoughts are Seattle will pull away from SF. I think Chicago and LA could be entertaining if the score gets going. Last team with the ball wins kind of game. Texans at Pats could be a real low scoring slugfest. And the hardest to predict to me is Buffalo-Denver, like I posted about before.

Good analysis of the Bills-Broncos game...couldn't agree with you more.

Herbert is not a "big stiff" because he's as mobile & athletic as Allen. You saw those runs last night - the way he can accelerate through the open lanes, the moves he can put on defenders. He was even putting stiff arms on defenders with his broken hand.

I don't see how the OL was playing that well when the Patriots blitzed nearly half of Herbert's dropbacks, generating 45% pressure on those plays, compared to 29.2% on standard downs (Next Gen stats).

But I'll say this: If Herbert doesn't improve in the postseason, he'll end up another Steve Grogan. Lol. Do you remember Grogan back in the 1970s Patriots? (Chuck Fairbanks era). Grogan had elite size (for that era), a cannon arm & was mobile & athletic (He was the first big QB with a elite arm strength that could run effectively). But he couldn't win in the postseason & injuries finally took their toll on him.
I agree that Allen and Herbert share a bunch, but intention, decisive football moves, it's all a fraction of a second, Allen makes up his mind a split second faster than Herbert has so far in his career. A major criticism for Allen is running downhill and never shying away from either delivering or taking a hit. Fans, his agent, team , ownership, insurance companies all look on in horror as Josh smashes into people at full speed with absolute no reservation..runs like he means it. Justina Herbert is never downhill, his torso is upright and he is always looking to slide himself to safety, always looking to avoid giving or getting hit. Most would argue that is an intelligent philosophy. Herbert is 6-6 @230 and Allen is an inch shorter, still 230..Allen blasts into guys twice as hard as Herbie the love bug.

Allen also noticeably getting dinged up more now. think last year was his best for QB runs. Watching him and Cook sometimes it's like watching an extra RB. Not sure what his figures are this year but the run yards must be pretty high.

Tomlin's departure is not surprising, and arguably predictable (we talked about it). Who are they going to get to replace him? They've had just 3 head coaches over the last 57 years!!! There are already reports on where he will go next, with many assuming he's going to take a new job as HC next year. I don't see that. I see him stepping away from the NFL, maybe forever.

It's a good year to be a head coach. Over 1/4 of the league has openings! On the flip side, I think there is actually a fair amount of talent on the market all the same.

Josh Allen is a much better passer, more accurate, and significantly better in the clutch when it really matters than Herbert. Aside from their size there is no comparison between the two.

Allen is listed at 237 lbs & Herbert at 236 lbs on their rosters, and the same on the weigh-ins at the combine. They're both a couple of TEs that can throw the snot out of the ball. Lol.

Allen's style of running the ball has always been that way. TBH, he's been extremely lucky to have not sustained a major injury. Big guys get hurt all the time in the NFL. And we saw what happened with Mahomes when a major injury finally caught up with him.

Yep, Herbert slides & runs out of bounds a lot to avoid getting clocked. Wouldn't you? Definitely a smart guy: He's a Walter V. Campbell award winner his senior year at Oregon which is awarded every season to the player with the best combination of academics, leadership, and on-field performance (considered the "Academic Heisman").

And Allen is a better all-round & more successful postseason QB, and is rated as one of 5 "Tier 1" QBs currently (Mahomes, Burrow, Jackson & Stafford). Herbert is rated as a Tier 2:

A much better passer? Definitely a better overall QB as a top dual-threat, much better in the clutch and of course far more successful in the postseason. But the passing numbers are fairly close with a slight edge to Herbert:

Herbert:

YPG: 261
Pct: 66.5
Y/A: 7.2
TD/INT: 163/58
Rtg: 96.3

Allen:

YPG: 235
Pct: 64.9
Y/A: 7.4
TD/INT: 220/94
Rtg: 94.4

Also, are you discounting Young's opinion of Herbert as "elite" and in the same conversion with Mahomes & Allen?

Yes, I'm discounting Herbert. I don't think much of him. He's 0-3 in the playoffs, and you (not specifically you, Nomad), like other Charger fans and Herbert apologists can toss out all kinds of stats, complain about his offensive line, his OC, his head coach, praise his size, arm, Wonderlic score and so on. But the fact remains he's simply not delivered after six seasons in the NFL as the anointed franchise QB with a $262m deal at $52 per year. So yes, I'm discounting him.

You can say Allen hasn't got the Bills to the big dance, and that's true, but he's 8-6 in the playoffs in his 8 seasons, and come up big time and again in big games, and clutch moments. Throw out that collapse his defense did in 2022, and again in 2024, both against Mahomes when Patty was incredible, and Allen goes to, and wins the Super Bowl at least once, if not twice.

It's one thing to pile up huge yards between the 10 yard lines, or throw TDs when the game isn't on the line, and another entirely to do so, carrying your team, when it absolutely matters most. The first is Herbert, the second is Allen.

We can even play a game around this. You're drafting a team today, from scratch. All the other big QBs have been taken, the two left are Allen and Herbert. Are you taking Herbert? I'm taking Allen if I get to choose first, and it takes zero thought on my pea brain to make this decision.

Allen was a turnover machine in his first few seasons but he sorted that out then he became a true dual threat and started running much more. No doubt Mahomes was the big blocker in the playoffs for Allen and Lamar, you could also say that Mahomes was the blocker for Shanahan as well. He rescued them in both SB's against the 49ers, helped out by Jimmy G as well in the 2019 one and some iffy play calling by Shanahan at times when the game was on the line.

As much as Seattle's lineup should have the edge on SF the week off benefits them for recovery. Preparation and any "rust" from a week off might cause a slow start from their offense. I hope not but coaches tend to like daily checks to know for sure. Buffalo-Denver might be the best game of the week.

Forecast for the game in Chicago is high temp of 19 and nighttime low of 9. Since it's the late game it should already be in the mid-teens during the game. Wind about 15 mph (though always seems windier there). I don't think games in the 20s this time of year are a big factor, but that forecast will probably effect the play. Though I'm not sure it always hugely benefits the "cold weather" team. Sometimes favors the better running team. The bigger factor (I think) are the more random dropped passes, wind blown field goal attempts and punts. As for QBs, smaller hands is a drawback in cold weather.

We're in a very mild stretch of weather in Seattle this week, and that is supposed to continue through Sat, with highs in the 50s. Non-factor for the game. Crappy for skiing though!

With the Bills they also lost WR Shavers. While Gabe Davis is a bigger name he only played in a few games this season, Shavers has been productive. Allen has however spread the ball out all over, in fact, last week every receiver had just one single catch. Amazing! They still have his top targets: Shakir, Kincaid, Knox, Coleman, and of course Cook out of the back field.

Dante Moore returning to Oregon next season. The 2027 NFL draft could be loaded with QBs: Moore, Arch, Sayin, and a few others.

I don't think the weather will be that much of a factor in Chicago. Stafford and Adams played in that division for years, including games in winter in Green Bay, for example.

Strange season so far in the entire pacific northwest. Between torrential downpours causing flooding and a high freeze level (yep, really bad for skiing), there has also been stretches of clear weather (good for cycling. I managed to ride nearly 20 miles yesterday as it was maybe 45, light breeze, mostly sun. More like October or March).

My question was are you arbitrarily dismissing Steve Young's professional opinion of Herbert? (maybe a bit of semantics here).

And no...I'm not a Charger fan, Herbert apologist, nor president of his fan club & all that. Lol. (isn't "unchained" the Charger fan here?). Like you with the Raiders, I grew up with the Broncos, met John Elway at the one of preseason training camp practices at UNC back in the early 80s, and had season tickets during the 80s & most of the 90s at the old "Mile High Stadium" before I discontinued them because of expense (haven't been to a game in over 25 yrs now. Lol).

In fact, how many times have I said Herbert is a "colossal underachiever" due to his poor postseason performance. And you're right - he makes a pretty penny as a top paid franchise QB but hasn't delivered in the postseason. In fact, Herbert & Tua are the only two top-10 salaried QBs that have not won a playoff game.

However, the point of my whole post was to provide some evidence that Herbert - as bad as he is in the postseason - is a better pocket passer than Allen. Of course, Allen is a far better overall QB as one of the top dual-threats in history of the game. And his "Tier 1" status would bear that out. But when it comes to pure passing, Herbert has got him on that.

I provided the head to head stats proving that Herbert is better passer than Allen. And since you dismissed what Hall of Famer Steve Young has to say, let's see what thee GOAT & part owner of your Raiders has to say on this matter:

"Tom Brady says Justin Herbert is the best passer in the NFL when the Chargers protect him."

"If they protect Justin Herbert, he's the best passer in the league," Brady said "Get him help with quick plays and screens, and support him with the run game to avoid unnecessary hits."

It sounds like the Chargers need to get Herbert better pocket protection & some weapons guiding him more toward a pure pocket passer instead of an Allen-type dual-threat that Greg Roman was trying to instill in him.

Don't you think this Texan D will make life miserable for Maye? Look at what they did to Allen & Mahomes earlier this year. Both had the worst games of their careers with Allen behind sacked a career high 8 times. And last week Stroud turns the ball over 3 times & the D still kept the Steelers out of the endzone. McDaniels & Maye have to be looking at film thinking how in the heck can we throw the ball against these monsters?
