I've been having a bit more of a play around, and I've got to be honest: I don't really like it much. A lot of the features just appear to be rearrangements of functionalities we already had, and the layout not being conducive to long posts or reading anything in-depth is not a positive development imo. Quote trees I can take or leave - it definitely cuts down on repetition, but at the same time once we get to sizable quote trees it just cuts off before you can actually see what's being responded to. A lot of the new added features are things I really can't see myself using very much, and certainly I feel that having more emojis is not a worthwhile trade for readability. Is there a way to stop displaying the eleven billion trophy icons, too, because they're just annoying really. Most of them are to do with longevity and number of posts anyway, you can see my join date and post count already which renders most of them pointless.
With all the benefits of the new forums tending toward the direction of more added emojis and post reactions it feels like a directional shift away from discourse and towards two-sentence soundbite-type posting. I find the fact that a discussion forum is a forum for actual discussion to be one of its benefits, and if I wanted reddit type bite-size posting, I'd post on reddit (but I don't, and so I don't). Time will tell, and I know a lot of people weren't keen on the last forum upgrades but quickly got used to them, but I'm very sceptical. I'm aware that I'm something of a curmudgeon, and that others will not be as concerned as me about the loss of readability of long posts because they don't make so many as I do, but I have to say I'm underwhelmed.
