New Forum! Feedback thread

Yeah not sure what happened with all that space on the sides, but it's gone now and much, much better for me.

Gotta agree that the trophies under the user are a gigantic waste of space. It's literally 70% of space my posts take unless I'm writing a novel.

I used to like jumping to the last read post from the little icon in the list of posts.
Can't find it now.
Any easy work arounds?

It seems that the transfer of the last read saved settings (I don't know what's a correct term for that) wasn't quite successful. Now you need to take 10 minutes of your time and open all the threads you're interested in on last pages (preferably on PC). Then the 'new posts' section will show you the threads with, well, new posts. After clicking on it it will take you directly to the first unread post

It'll be great for browsing on mobile/tablet but it will take a lot of getting used to on PC. Not a fan of thanks/point scoring tbh. It works well on reddit but on other forums it jst turns into a never ending back and forth point scoring *** measuring contest and cliques ganging up on users.

Fair play though, at least it solves the disaster during TDF with people being timed out of the forum.

The nested quote system is probably the worst thing about the new forum software, at least that I've noticed so far. It's rather important for at the very least the last quoted message to be displayed by default instead of having it all hidden behind an expand button.

Just mark forums as read. Takes a lot less time.

Thanks to the Devs for giving us a workable, likeable new forum to play in :). Reducing the space taken up by shortening the list of accomplishments to the highest achieved would ease the issue. I'm Ancient, no need to show the 4 icons I went through to get there. Doing the same in other categories and my line of icons is One instead of Seven. That is valuable real estate on a mobile device :).
I'm learning all the new options and how to navigate around, but I Like It! Thank You CyclingNews and the Devs!

this user-script makes it easier to read on pc (I use Firefox/ViolentMonkey):

CSS:
.p-body-sidebar,
footer.footer_site,
.uix_fabBar,
.trophyShowcase,
.shareButtons
{
    display: none !important;
    width: 0px !important;
}

.structItem-cell
{ padding: 0 0 !important }

div.uix_contentWrapper[uix_component="MainContainer"]
{
  width: 125% !important;
}

.pairs--justified
{ line-height: 1.1;}

I second this regarding the mobile version.
I'd love to be able to customize what user info/awards will be shown to me - I'd probably hid all of them anyway :)
EDIT: Nah, it's wasting the space in full (desktop/PC) version also. Please address this devs, thx.

Cant really put my finger on it, but it just seems kinda sucky to me. Really like the old forum much better, but hopefully I will get used to it. Dont need all the fancy stuff at all, Im getting confused over there

Keep exploring the forums as time allows and be sure to post again once you've pinned down your specific concerns. There may be ways we can help, but to make sure to give everyone the best experience we will need to know specific points of concern.

Thanks to you for being part of the community! We're listening to all the feedback, so we really appreciate hearing from everyone. We'll never be able to make a forum that is perfect for every user/situation, but we're very happy to have you all working on the new, much more robust platform. It will take some getting used to, for sure, but we are confident this was a big step forward for CyclingNews.

I'm really liking the dark mode, it makes a giant difference for me. I agree about all the trophy/symbols taking up too much room. Who needs those?
A direct one-click link to new posts on the main forum page (instead of, or as well as the currently "what's new" link) would be nice, the previous forum had this. New Posts are now more than one click away, even if choosing from the top left menu. However I can live with that if it can't be changed.

I honestly don't understand how the devs messed up restoring the content. I hope they still can restore the lost messages of the past one and a half / two days. A cyclist died on monday, and there is a gap in the thread where people were paying their respects.
That really sucks. We're sorry we lost some during the migration. Unfortunately the old forum software was really on its last legs and a massive security risk to boot. It was quite buggy and needing an upgrade. We attempted to put the board into read only mode many times, but we're unsuccessful it seems. The good news is that the new forum platform has much better support. It is highly unlikely you will lose content ever again.

I've always felt that far too few people using the old forum actually knew how to quote properly, they'd reproduce a 700 word screed just to reply to one sentence in it. So, thumbs up from me for nesting.

I distinctly recall reading a warning saying that any posts made during the upgrade process on Wednesday might not appear on the new forum.

So the PC/desktop version works generally fine for me, in terms of user friendliness, as it looks and feels almost the same as the previous one. The main reservations about it are those that were already mentioned several times:

  1. Compress the user info panel to the left of the post so that it is shorter and does not unnecessarily increase the vertical length of the post
  2. Get rid of avatars of thread creators in the thread list - before, threads had their own icon (usually just standard one, but some threads had some special emoji or similar). Now with the avatars it is useless, confusing, and annoying. Or if you want to have some fancy pictures there, enable a feature that when creating a thread, we can upload any image to accompany that thread. E.g. a Froome thread would get Chris's smiley face, race threads would get race logos, etc.
As regards the mobile platform, I think I need more time to find my way around it...

I distincly remember a post saying the forum would be offline for a day before the upgrade would take place.
Was that the message posted before the Tour? Cause I don't recall that being in the one I read this week saying the updgrade would take place on Wednesday and posts made during the upgrade could be lost.

Come on, be honest here: it's not like anything vitally important to humanity is likely to have been lost, no one posted the cure for cancer on Wednesday, did they?

The old system where old quotes would just keep piling up until the whole thing broke down was atrocious and too few people made the effort to manually tidy up their posts, I agree. The current system where clicking on Reply only keeps one quote level is much better in my opinion. However, it's still bad that nested quotes don't display the newest one unless you expand them.

You can now also highlight the element of text you are directly replying to and a dialogue will pop up, giving you a reply option that will quote just the relevant part of the comment (I haven't worked out what the other option, Quote, does, probably summons Satan). Previously you had to manually edit code a bit to quote succinctly, which I do accept was sometimes a bit of a palaver, especially on mobile/tablets when quoting from a mega-response.
