New Forum! Feedback thread

You can now also highlight the element of text you are directly replying to and a dialogue will pop up, giving you a reply option that will quote just the relevant part of the comment (I haven't worked out what the other option, Quote, does, probably summons Satan). Previously you had to manually edit code a bit to quote succinctly, which I do accept was sometimes a bit of a palaver, especially on mobile/tablets when quoting from a mega-response.
It's a bit of a byzantine system, but apparently you only click Quote if you want to quote several different posts, so you do that then click on Insert quotes under the message box thingy and another window pops up where you can rearrange them before inserting them. I might like it, not sure yet (most of the heavy quoting will be done through the Reply button anyway, so I guess if you need to post several people it's OK that it takes a bit more work).

Can it? What purpose could it serve? Is it really important to see avatar of those who opened the thread and assign such prominent space to this information?
You can think of it as a soft block list if you really want ;o). Plus, the old icons were totally meaningless, to a baffling degree, at least these impart some meaningful information. And it's not like they're taking up real estate, on either PC or mobile, not like, say, those *** Trophy icons.

those people complaining about the size of the forum on pc, what resolution are you using? On my pc (1080p) looks just like the past version...
I'm on 1366x768 and, as previously posted, when not logged up, more than 500 of the 768 px height can be taken up witth headers/ads top and bottom of the screen when not logged in. The issue is when you're not logged in.

Getting old-ish I thought I had accidentally clicked on something on my own laptop to make the forums look this way, took me a while (and this thread) to realize CN is actually supposed to look like this now. Heh!

Anyhoo, I tweaked a few things on my end so that the forums are more readable/navigable to me, the only thing I don't care for is the new trophy and points and whatnot stuff under the usernames. It takes up too much space, and cyclists being competitive anyway I hope it doesn't lead to some petty popularity contests.

Otherwise, eh, I suppose it's all right. It's just something new I'll have to get used to.

The first thing I noticed is what fmk pointed out. You can't go directly from the thread link on the forum to the last page. I appreciate that you can apparently go to the first unread post (I haven't tried that), but if a thread has been really busy since I last browsed it, often I just want to go to the last page to get an idea of what's going on. Then I can make the decision whether to go back and look at some of the preceding unread posts.

There is another forum I frequent where they do the same thing, and I always liked CN because of the ease of going to the last page of any thread. For sure, I never want to go to the first page of any multi-page thread once I've read the first post.

I think only showing the most recent post quoted is very helpful. In the past, lazy people have quoted a long list of previous posts, which IMO logs up the forum. Granted, sometimes it's easier to follow a discussion when you see a string of posts all at once, but too often we would see the same string repeated again and again, with one short new response each time. So I think the new system is better.

I haven't yet seen how threads that have had activity since I last opened them are distinguished from ones that haven't. From reading this thread, I take it there is a difference in color, which I will have to check on. In another forum I frequent, newly active threads are shown by being bolded, so one can tell in a glance.

I also see that after starting this post, and not wanting to post it yet, I can go back and look at other pages in the thread without losing what I've already written. That is a big plus. I tend to modify posts on the fly, as I acquire more information, and this is a big plus.

On the whole, I'm having a little trouble with the new format, but that may be just a matter of time getting used to it.

No, on a laptop. And just in replying to you, I see that I apparently have to click on Quote, then on Reply. Just clicking on Quote doesn't do anything.
Bear with me, Mi, I'm just experimenting with how to quote somebody if I want to reply to them. I've bolded "Reply" in your post just for *** and giggles because that is what I'm directly trying to reply to. So far it seems to be working ok.

I'm on a laptop as well, btw., are you trying to just quote a certain post you want to reply to? (I think most confusion will come from people using different gadgets and using different terms for the same things. Kinda like with bicycle parts. Heh.)

Read my first message.
And if that's the take, then why even bother restoring the forum. No cure for cancer was posted in the previous 10 years either.

Yeah it’s a shame that a couple of days worth of posts were lost, but it just shows how completely out of date the old software was, it was that bad that devs couldn’t even do pretty standard tasks when migrating across.

I think it’s a small price to pay to have a forum that now works well. It was pretty clear that next to nobody was happy with the performance of the old forum over recent months.

No automatic "bad word" censoring anymore I just noticed, lol.

If it's a feature, not a bug, I'm totally fine with it, but surprising.

Really…? *** *** *** *** ***! (Right, I'l behave myself now…)
Apparently it was a bug...

I distinctly recall reading a warning saying that any posts made during the upgrade process on Wednesday might not appear on the new forum.

I distinctly remember reading that the upgrade would happen the 7th (Wednesday), yet a lot of the lost posts were made the 6th (Tuesday).

Ah, so you just hit reply, and the quote comes up. Then what's the point of the quote button?

OK, I have a strange one:
Was using new forum without any issue whole day yesterday (in work, PC and mobile version). I came home and could not access it - I only saw the old one and content was missing since 7th of Aug (I even posted in this thread but can't see my post in within the new forum. I can in the old one though :)).
Now I turned my work laptop on (working from home today) and the new one is accessible again. But on a mobile and home PC I can't see it - I see just the old one. WTF?
I tried to clean the cache and cookies yesterday bu to no avail.

EDIT: Looks like a DNS propagation delay... I tried to change my ISP DNS to google public ones and voila - the new forum is presented to me at home too. So if someone has the same issue, just give it a try.

PS: Found a little bug - when I log in the page stays the same - it still says login on top right but I'm already logged in. I have to click at some button (in forum) and only after that the page recognize me being logged in and load all my settings (theme included).

The more I use it the better it looks like. Great work by the devs with a few very useful tools here and there.

I like the bookmark feature in each post, I can save posts for future reference and even label/tag them to easily retrieve them in case of need.

The quoting system is a huge improvement too. The feature allowing readers to highlight specific portions of text and having a quote button popping up immediately can be a difference maker. Nesting is great. Multiquoting is much easier too.

And let's not forget the timeout, bad getaway, blacklist issues we kept having until a couple days ago. That alone is worth the change.

I think you're right, I tried it again and it does work. So that's good, althought not as good as before where it took you to the last unread post I think. But it's better than having to manually go to the last post. A very useful thing for mobile pages would be to have a page selector at the top and the bottom, in stead of just the bottom. That would help massively.
