Oldcrank you are quite the messenger for Cookson ! Such close ties.

As to the reference from the Hitch and Benotti. This is a slow burner. A bit like the Lance story. Nepotism is a key contributor of systemic failure.

However, just for the moment let's be happy that in this case Cookson is very busy making sure he doesn't go and look in places where he is sure he would not like to observe what he would see.

Move a bead one place to the right and say once again "That all happened.....

Michael Brian needs to keep on with the program of supplements from CNP or whatever they call themselves these days. (half way down read "Kayes" for "Keyes".) All good stuff.

Smacks of nepotism.

It's kinda sad when plain ol' top level political nepotistic appointments seem like a welcome relief to the stratospherically more crazy nepotism that would cause, say, a Malaysian federation to nominate an Irishman for the top post when he's been rejected by his own country, or for other cycling officials to publicly compare someone looking to challenge the legality of that nomination to war criminals.

If Mr. Michael Brian Cookson OBE is elected UCI President
there is a very good chance the Absolute Hour Record will
be resurrected and co-exist with the Athletes Hour Record.
A number of bike, component and wheel companies that give
great support to professional cycling have been pushing for
the return of the Absolute Hour Record for a number of years.
NEWSFLASH: Mr. Cookson has announced today that Mr.Tony Martin
and Mr. Fabian Cancellara will now be allowed to use modern
technology to pursue the Hour Record, as I correctly
suggested was a strong possiblility last year.

But the pre-Athlete's hour records still won't count, so whoever goes for it first will have a pretty easy target

Yes, my friend, you are correct. However, as Mr. Bobridge
has beaten Mr. Boardman's pursuit record the court of
public opinion will also expect Mr. Martin or Mr. Cancellara
to beat Mr. Boardman's Hour Record. I also believe that
Tony or Fabian themselves would target Chris' 56.375km.

He's going to do nothing until the last few months of this term as President, then the UCI will bust some small fish maybe a medium one and in his quest for re-election he will point to those busted(I'm sure it will be due to the BP, natch!) to show he's tough on doping and tough on the causes of doping. SSDD :)

Uhh. so, what does "modern technology" mean?

Is the superman position fair game?
Are seat tubes or even a "triangle design" required?
wheel size?
fairings or equipment molded with a fairing?

It's one thing to permit "modern technology" it's other to publish the definition of "modern technology."

Will only one Hour Record be recognized?
Yes, my friend, that is the case. The Hour Record has now
more or less fallen in line with the Pursuit and Team Pursuit.
One record for each discipline, and similar regulations as to
bikes, wheels, bars, helmets, etc. although pursuit and team
pursuit records can be set in competition while, obviously, the
Hour is strictly a record attempt sanctioned in advance by the
UCI who will appoint the commisaires.

Presumably so long as the bike frame has one of those stupid UCI stickers, it will be usable.

Can't wait until the UCI 'sanctions' Strava segment attempts.

Without McQuaid around and looking for handouts, though, maybe that won't happen.

Dave.

The amended rules are on the uci.ch website, my friend.
The 'modern technology' phrase was mine, and was not
included anywhere in the UCI press release. Sorry for
any concern or confusion it may have caused.

Actually, my friend, I am hoping the new Hour Record
regulations may result is some meaningful improvement
in wheels and helmets that may allow me to maintain
my pursuit times and sprint speeds for another several
years or until my arthritis won't allow me to swing my leg
over a bike anymore.:)

Hmmm, so we won't have a meaningful comparison to Merckx's performance. Bummer. :(
