His comments about Larssen yesterday were what got me. keep your piehole shut when you lose, otherwise you sound like a whiner.

I understand that in the immediate disappointment of how the race went, guys might say things they regret. Even Mr. Tranquilo, Sastre, unloaded after a tour stage this year. But he, like Evans at the Vuelta regarding gesink, apologized for those remarks afterwards.

One would hope that at a minimum, Wiggins makes a similar apology.

I think a lot is being made of nothing here really

Wiggins said he didn't deserve third sitting behind Cancellera cheating Martin out of Bronze. Calling Larsson numb nuts and doing the same thing is a bit out of order but looked light hearted more than anything and not an excuse for his own performance. This is quite different from the Evans cry baby crap. Certainly didn't scream into some guys face or threaten to chop heads off

http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/398479/wiggins-accepts-worlds-time-trial-defeat.html

Comment in the media still not particularly sporting so an apology would be appropriate. Like Evans he is not good in front of the camera so and is a bit misunderstood.

Everyone gets fired up in racing and loses some cool in frustration when getting a mechanical. His throwing the bike down was much less intense than Millar or Riis in a similar situation. He seemed to get it together again afterwards as well.

One thing quite interesting is there is almost no postings about how Millar was robbed of his third place by his mechanical in other words Wiggins fans just let it go and move on.

I have looked at the BBC piece a couple of times.

There is no doubt that he slighted Garmin with his comments - although he was caught off guard. But I don't believe he was saying it in a jokey way.

One point about his Wigan v Man Utd analogy - while his Tour performance was impressive he is not good enough to make a 'Man Utd' team!

The only team that would build a team around him is Sky - more for patriotic reasons than signing a genuine Tour contender. He should be tweeting his apologies to JV and the rest of the team.

So now garmin are manchester united now? How so? Until the tail end of the season they had won ****** all! I am no fan of the shirt selling "club" from manchester but comparing garmin to them is insane. Sky are also not manu either though they have not done anything yet. Columbia are manU.
Garmin ARE wigan, a middle order team with not the biggest budget but make the most of what they have, no shame in that but they are not a top tier team. Amazing how americans seem to think they know anything about football:rolleyes:

i would say columbia where more liverpool.. very good at knock out competitions, but not enough strength or depth to win the league.. (astana> madrid bunch of pre-maddonas who cant get on together)

i think the last "man utd" we had was postal.. i dont think wigan is too bad an analogy to be honest.. been in the top flight a couple of years, had a few good results, and in with a chance of winning some smaller trophies but a long way to go before challenging for the big ones..

nb: wigan ARE a top tier team, just the middle of the top tier...

talking of liverpool.. 5-1... only 1 short of cavs record.. :D

edit: 6... :D yup.. columbia are liverpool..

Garmin are the people going around desperately trying to sign Contador in front of Wiggins' face - they clearly have no interest in building a team for Wiggins - so Wiggins has no obligation to be nice about them.

Secondly, it was quite clear that Gustav Erik Larsson was slip streaming Cancellara. The commissars had to warn him for it. Wiggins was doing the decent thing by calling him out on it. Wiggins really hates cheating. Some people may not like that about him, but fair play is just part of his personality. He can't change that.

it is interesting here that a bunch of people where accusing him of slipstreaming.. some of those people are now critisising brad for suggesting it...

one small point...

wigan are currently 3-1 up against chelsea...

LeMond won the Tour riding for ADR - a team weaker than Wigan.

Alberto could win the Tour riding on Wigan.

But that is beside the point...I believe Brad when he says:

So what you are saying is it is OK if Wiggo does it, but not OK if Evans/Millar/Riis does it. Is that your position?!

There are many doctored/fake videos on the InterWebs - that could very well be another one.

Or maybe I just do not appreciate British Humour?
"she turned me into a 2 faced whiner...
...I got better"

Complete blurb from Mr Pelkey below:

Author:*Charles Pelkey*
Date:***09-25-09 13:17

I pulled the story as it was originally posted, because I was seeking comment from Wiggins, Vaughters and others.

In part, Wiggins wrote:

Hi Charles,
I got misquoted, Its a load of ********, I have a lot of love for Garmin and these storys are not my thoughts on Garmin ...

I found that to be strange, since the original has a video and those are direct quotes and so, I followed up. He says that while he made the comments, the AFP story - and several others - misconstrued the meaning. I figure you can read, watch and make your own conclusions.

In his defense, I'd dispute many of the disparaging remarks made in the above posts. He's always been approachable and a very reasonable fellow to work with and he's always been a team player. Now, put yourself in his shoes and see what you might do were you being actively recruited by a heavily-financed team in your own country. I, for one, would at least hedge my bets to see how things play out.

how do you know this?

Because I do.

For your reference as many on here don't believe me read Cycle Sport magazine from June 2009. "In Search of Alberto" article: "Christian is a very good friend of mine and apart from that being a very focused rider who can do a good major Tour. He's ultra motivated. In face, he could start an entire war on his own".

Actually that was another point I spotted from the BBC interview - he was asked about the Sky move directly, so he had an opportunity to flat out deny there is any attempts to leave Garmin or even just politely say "no, I am under contract".

It is quite simple - he has a contract with Garmin through to the end of 2010.
Of course he would like to ride for his home country and get the opportunity to be a the GT leader of the team - but it simply cant happen unless Garmin get Contador, which I doubt even though I expect him to get out of Astana.

Even Brailsford said that as much as they would like to have him he is under contract to Garmin and "we respect contracts".

That's a complete representation, of course. Wiggins said he sat up to avoid drafting. He didn't admit to doing the same thing as Larsson. And if you look at the way Cancellera rode away from Wiggins compared to his struggle to shake off Larsson, who was warned by the commisars, this makes sense.

As for the quote, I think he was trying to say the analogy didn't come off as he wanted it to. He probably wasn't trying to criticise Garmin but was refering to his place in Garmin compared to his place in Sky, where he would be the team leader.

But you've got to remember that he has worked with British cycling for years and rates them very highly indeed. If he thinks they are more professional than Garmin then maybe he is right.

Sorry for not understanding the British humor, I do get the reference to football teams now.

I'm still annoyed with his Larsson comments, the guy is an OL silver medalist!
To me it looked like Wiggins got upset after Larsson passed him, stayed on the same slipstream until he figured out there was something wrong with his bike.
Sure.

Sure.

He was gaining time and would probably have gotten bronze. There is no way he would pretend there is something wrong with the bike. After he got up the hill he was about the enter his fastest part of the course.

I love all the backtracking he did, he knew he said something wrong but still tries to blame it on the BBC when it was him that says it on video.

Haven't you been banned like a million times? Why are you still posting?

Wiggins was a bad loser, what else can you say? Slamming Larsson was lame.

Wa wa wa wa wa wa wa

Wiggins this ... wiggings that ... :(

Boo hoo!

Hey, I think with all the speculation, I would f with people as well.

I also think his comment on Larsson was fair game.

None of us will know for sure if he is an ungrateful bugger, or if he was toying with us, until Garmin and Sky complete their rosters!
