Biathlete Mari laukkanen seems to have improved quite a bit. Within a week she beat mäkäräinen in a biathlon duel and today she beat Finnish xc A team athletes in a sprint race, which she also won. Ok, it is very early season still and it was a sprint, but nonetheless quite surprising.
Laukkanen's been a decent XC sprinter for a while though, as you can see from her FIS XC profile.

8th in Lahti sprint quali 2014
15th in Olympic Games sprint Sochi 2014
5th in Toblach sprint quali 2014 (21st in ensuing sprint)
1st in Sochi sprint quali 2013 (5th in ensuing sprint)
2nd in Finnish national championships sprint (quali & finals) 2011
1st U23 World Sprint Champion Hinterzarten 2010
2nd U23 World Sprint Championships Praz-de-Lys 2009

My thinking is that with it being early season and having a decent record in sprints anyway at least at reduced field World Cups she may have made a step forward in ski speed but it's not going to be astronomical. Her problem was always shooting, although she had a disappointing season last year.
Agree with your overall point, i think she has improved. However, i thought pärmäkoski was the fave so it was a surprise to me anyhow. Especially after Laukkanen's last season.

Shooting is gonna be the bottleneck as you said.

Which makes me think that she made a big mistake in switching to biathlon. Yes, she only has Makarainen to worry about, but still. Finnish biathlon nowadays is about getting anybody to ski for them, anyone. In all seriousness Laukanen should have stuck with XC. Individual skate races, particularly skate sprints is what the Finnish women are lacking. They are good there, but not as good as they are in classic races, so she would have been a strong card for the Finns. I have no idea what the financial situation is for either biathlon or XC but I will venture and say it's better in xc.

an impressive sprint by a norge junior against most of the norge hard hitters in beito...the klæbo kid dispatched the elite iversen, krogh and golberg as if they were an old story.

falla prevailed but it was good to see a none norge runner up. i actually though vesna may catch her...

in ruka, both the men and women quals are just over.

i am looking at the both top-30 lists as i type...

among the men the klaebo kid was the qual winner with another 3 norges making the QF. somewhat surprizing pelle was only 15th, kriukov barely made it (26th)...good to NOT to see sundby in the QF (34th). Hattestad also did not make it to my mild surprise. calle was the 2nd fastest swede

among the women also some mild surprises...
parmakoski won over stina in 2nd as well as over 2 more swedish girls...justyna was 5th which speaks of good form for tomorrow. a little surprising was that no less than 6 russian girls are in the QF, with matveeva ahead of bjoergen (15th). the fastest norge lady was oestberg (6th)

the QF will start in a little less than 1H...

Klæbo is the coming king, seemingly, if he can keep this kind of form up. Obviously this early in the season, people who have had to fight to get into the squad are going to likely be in better form than those whose places were fairly secure, so it was in some ways a slightly odd event. Golberg basically being there as sub after Northug pulled out was case in point, going on to win it. I liked the hill just before the finishing straight as it meant a bit of variety in the sprints, with some people you mightn't normally expect up there going for it. And some odd results like Luusua beating Jönsson. Have to say though, the performances of the Russian women, Belorukova in particular, were impressive after a lean period for them, and the Norge domination wasn't quite as strong as anticipated, Bjørgen looked off the pace, and Ingvild Flugstad Østberg didn't seem to have the usual spring in her step this early in the season, struggling on the climb in the semi-final and missing the final as a result. Stina Nilsson looks like this could be her year, she's another year older, stronger and the Norwegians look a little more beatable at the moment, if she can rack up a few wins before they hit their stride, confidence will be high and she'll likely be able to break their hegemony a bit more often.

I really thought this was Panzhinskiy's race. He looked so good all day and then fluffed up the final. He is notorious for this. He'll qualify among the first few places, look good and then come up with a big fat zero in the finals. Sometimes it's bad tactics, sometimes it's a fall, sometimes it's getting tangled up with another racer, but most of the time it's because he runs out of gas. He's 27 now, certainly not old, but it's crazy that he hasn't won a single world cup race in his career. He won at World Juniors, won at U23's, won a silver in Vancouver at 20, won bronze with Kriukov at World's in Oslo 2011, but no individual win, not even a podium!!! He's gonna break that soon, right?!?

Yes, it was nice to Nilsson get one on the Norwegians, in particular Falla, who dominated last year. It's too bad for Finland, at their home tracks, not have had podium finisher in either the men's or women's races. It's been a while since they had a podium finisher at their home world cups in sprints in particular.

Matveeva is an experienced and consistent sprinter, the best the Russians have had in the last few years, but she didn't quite have enough to challenge the Scando's. Belorukova is very talented. One of the best juniors and U23 skiers (still a U23 at 21) in the world, particularly in classic. This may be a good a omen for the Russian's. Their women haven't had much to celebrate over the past few seasons, mostly due to overtraining and the core of their national team is very young, so experience is key for them now.

Klaebo's form is very high right now, to say the least. I don't think he'll keep it for the rest of the season, but the fight for spots on the Norwegian men's sprint team will be fascinating. Neither Northug or Brandsdal raced today. Hattestad didn't qualify and you still have guys like Krogh, Golberg (coming back after two down seasons), Fossli, Iversen, and a plethora of other skiers that didn't even make it to Kuusamo. Since Northug won in Falun, they'll have an extra spot (5) for that sprint team, so that makes it slightly easier, but we'll see how long they are in form.

Surprised to see Kowalczyk not make it out of her quarterfinal heat. I don't know why she chose heat 1, seeing how both Parmakoski (1) and Nilsson (2) both chose that one. More rest for the semi and final? Still, I would have picked another heat.

Bjoergen may not have looked great, but let's be honest, 20 months since she last raced world cups? Can you blame her? She'll be ok later in the season, no doubt.

I second what python said, glad Sundby didn't qualify. Though I think he'll be good tomorrow. As will Vylegzhanin for the Russians.

I dared to hope that the curse would break today, but alas, it was not to be. I should have known better

...on panzhinski: indeed, he was very strong today taking 2nd in the quals (less then 1 sec off klaebo) and winning both of his heats. there are 2 factors in my opinion that did him in the final. the 1st was his choice of heat 3 in the QF thus loosing the precious recovery time. if he was attempting to avoid klaebo in the 1st QF, which is understandable, he certainly should have started in the 2nd QF heat. he was so strong that there was no doubt he's advance in to semis. the 2nd reason, i speculated, was the combination of his size (he looked like a bus - i bet he added 2-3 kg of muscles compared to the last year) and the long, steep last hill. he paid for stumping it earlier with little time for recovery..

halfvarsson surprised, didn't he, having run a smart race. and of course, i am still high on the stina victory :)

Marit only won by a few seconds this time though, since she's clearly got a bit of race rust still. Parmakoski made it reasonably close, and Weng. Still, good to see some with decent form. Since 10k isn't really a proper "distance race" it's still doable for the likes of Stina, and Østberg is pretty good over all distances as we know anyway, but to see proper distance specialists like Kowalczyk and Jacobsen getting good times bodes well, although Kalla was an obvious exception. Impressive from Victoria Carl too, having lost Denise Herrmann to biathlon the Germans need somebody to focus their program around since Fessel is 33 and Böhler is 35 and a distance specialist. She's been hyped for a while but at 21 seems to be starting to show what they need from her.

niskanen winning a home course was not a surprise. congrats, keep it up livo. sundby 3d is suspicious. i will let others to speculate why. of course we knew that olsson will be back, didn't we. bess only 8th. a disappointment, but nowhere nearly as bad as vyleg...cologna = disappointment too. i expected more from belov.

right now it seems that mussy has progressed amazingly ! him, calle, bess, harvey, perhaps ustiugov when he recovers his shoulder and that's about it to fight the norge onslaught this season...

Seemed to me björgen was timid / very cautious on the first lap and only started to up the speed on the latter one. As expected lacking race place. Pärmäkoski said she felt really bad, almost abandoned at 1k and was awestruck when heard her splits. So decided to carry on.

About niskanen, he has stressed that last year he made mistake in training, to wit too much intensity overall and especially on easy days. He has adjusted accordingly, but also upped volume overall. I think he is in a very good form.

From what I have read, all top finns seem to have adopted the so called Norwegian olympiatoppen or "polarised" training model this year. Meaning low intensity volume is upped both in total and as a percentage of all training (85% of all), threshold training goes down to a minimum (say 5%) and hard efforts are done above the threshold but below traditional vo2max speed (say 8-9%) and the remaining fraction is all out speedwork.

Seemed to work

It's way too early to tell who will fight the rest of the season. Niskanen won in Ruka two years ago and then disappeared (almost) until winning today. Apparently overtraining did him in. Cologna doesn't always fire on all cylinders this early in the season, neither Vylegzhanin. These guys are veterans. Look at two years ago when Vylegzhanin won in the skiathlon at the world's in Falun, he was very quiet for much of the early season. Solid results (top 10 overall in the TDS), but then won Rybinsk 30km and took another few weeks off and won the 30km in Falun, 4th in the 50 (bad tactics and Bauer stepped in front of him coming into the stadium). He is a bit like Olsson, he knows how to peak for the big events. Having said that, I am not sure what happened in the second half of the race today. He was fairly competitive placed 10-15th for the first half, then he dropped to the 40's. Did he fall? Did he simply run out of gas? Did the skis abandon him and he simply didn't want to extend himself? He caught the guy in front of him, but then the guy ended up ahead of him in the results. Strange.

The Finns dialed their preparations. Both the women and men had great races today. Heikkinen can be up and down, but this performance bodes well for them this season. Not sure what the weather will be like in Lillehammer next week, but two more classic races of the mini tour next weekend should see them continuing their good start. The problem is that the Norwegians will ski even better next week. Last year it was almost unwatchable. Sundby toyed with the field there were like 7 or 8 Norwegians in the top 12 men and something similar in the women's 15km where Johaug won by a couple minutes.

Like Vylegzhanin in the men's race, what in the world happened to Kalla?!?

Even Slovakian and Slovenian don't know who is who.

You would find a lot people who don't confuse these two nations.

Not to go completely off topic, but I am not sure you are correct on that.
That I am not correct on what?

Windy women's normal distance race in Östersund yesterday. Many struggled with their shooting, badly, and the race was a bit too much of a lottery to my liking. Dahlmeier won in the end, with two missed shots and good skiing. Bescond second and Jurkevitch surprise-podiumed.

Difficult to say where the faves are at n relation to one another. All seemed to be skiing quite well.

I agree. Very much a lottery, as witnessed by Koukalova's hit percentage of 65% and Hildebrand standing almost 1 minute without firing a shot at her 2nd shooting! Dahlmeier had pretty good wind conditions most of the time, but she also appeared cool on the last shooting by taking her time to fire the shots.

Anyway, I would certainly say that Habert is below form. She was not even among the top 10 skiers and almost 1½ minutes back on Dahlmeier and Koukalova who had the 1st and 2nd fastest course times, respectively.
