Last year his biggest competition was Jesus Herrada and Ruben Guerreiro in this race..
He'll win again this year but he is against Gaudu, Rodríguez, Carapaz, Martinez and Powless. That's very different competition!
Gaudu finshed over Vingegaard in Paris-Nice last year fx.
Gaudu was so-so on Mont Faron. I don't think he will be strong before Paris-Nice.

It will be interesting to see how Johannes Staune-Mittet does in this race. He was not good in TDU but hopefully he can show similar strength as for example Lecerf, Morgado, Christen, Faure-Prost etc. Those are riders that he was at least on par with if not outright better than last season.

Might be wrong, but get the impression it's more difficult for neopro GC riders to make a breakthrough at TVLB, than these other teams. He's probably 4th in the pecking order here, at a 2.1 race?

Gaudu was in good shape, but vingegaard had a bad preparation before paris nice, because of personal problems. He even had to let sooner than expect the altitude training camp in teide.

Always thought that was a bit of a media stunt. He game to the race and was quite over confident in interviews. But who knows..

Well there was gossip going on, even in the non sport press, before the race. It was not something they concocted after the fact.

That may certainly be the case but he can still show a lot better form than in TDU where he was getting dropped from the peloton even on the flatter stages.

"We also really enjoyed the stage race last year. The organisation is excellent, the stages are challenging, and there is a time trial again. This discipline is essential for the rest of the season. This year's Tour de France ends with a time trial in Nice," he explains.
