. . . . he had even a Dutch girlfriend. In the Netherlands we have the opinion that you should not play back to the future with taking away titles of the past from Lance. . . . . This shows that we never punish sporters on this for life and for that reason we feel sorry for Lance.
I totally agree that Lance cannot compete on professional cycle courses anymore and I respect the rules of the WADA on that. I do not respect the opinion that he can never participate in recreational running events like ours. And we cannot be bounded by WADA rules indeed. Everyone should have the right to participate in a local sports event. We do not check on drugs so I see no reason why he should not be welcome in our event. I do not believe that this will cause any damage. In The Netherlands this is not such a big deal. We believe that Lance will generate a positive vibe around our event.

Please do not speak on behalf of all Dutch. Lance has built a business empire based on a massive fraud. And wants to continue this into other sports/events. With Mart one of his great supporters from way back. . . . Suggest to think beyond your own Hoorn event about the bigger picture? You have kids who are good at sports and/or are looking at societal role models? You have cancer in your family? If so you need to know most of the Lance generated cancer funding makes no impact on cancer treatment or outcome. It goes towards Lance and Livestrong branding and cancer awareness. I for one don't need more cancer awareness. Put the funds towards mental health awareness, schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, etc. everyone knows what cancer is/does. It's a devious scheme to build the Lance and Livestrong brand to give Lance more societal power, perhaps for future business endeavours or a political career. That's all. Based on a massive fraud. Suggest to invite some real role models to Hoorn...
I fully agree with Tinman here and fear the Waaijer effect of Lance Armstrong on sports (cycling, MTB, triathlon) needs to be broken. Let the wind pass through and clear out all this falsehood and deceit.
I don't believe all the Dutch or even all the Dutch media support this. But I have been astounded by the amount of complicity in this affair by some leading Dutch media and riders. Most especially the role of De Telegraaf/Telesport, which seems to have played a role in the Armstrong camp with its so-called leaked names of witnesses, right through to the major media coverage of the USADA affair. It was unprofessional and abhorrent.
Frankly, I would hope that if Lance does show up at the Hoorn Marathon, that he is the sole runner. And be careful with how you have portrayed the Hoorn affair: Lance was invited by the organizers. This is inviting a known doper, international drug trafficker, person who drugs younger riders, conspirator, liar, cheat. WADA rules aside, what ever possessed the organizers of the Hoorn Marathon to invite Lance? This is just pure greed at the cost of honest sport.
I think until Lance comes clean, admits what he has done, and actually asks for forgiveness, your sympathy is misplaced. I do not see how you can possibly sympathize with someone who insists on such an enormous wrongdoing. I do agree that not all dopers need to be band from all sports for life. But those who have cheated and continue to lie and deny, deserve to be kept off the local basketball court, by the police if need be.
I cannot agree more with what Tinman wrote. And he said it better. Just on cancer. Please don't let LiveStrong influence our view on the importance of cancer awareness, cancer research, cancer therapy, and care for cancer patients and their families. I know there is a ton of awareness out there. LiveStrong, however, IMHO has nothing positive to do with the cancer world. For me this remains Lance's greatest crime.
And apologies to Mongol. I don't think it was badly intended. I just don't think it is thought out.
