Obstruction of justice

Regardless of the technicalities of the legal system as brutal as a (fraudulent) hero to (exposed) zero story it is, I do believe Lance deserves to go to jail and more than Marion Jones or Tim Montgomery did.

Lance did a lot of damage to society, not just to the lives of people he ruined but also to many kids growing up who wanted to be professional athletes, looked at Lance and genuinely believed that you could win without drugs.

Tim Montgomery dealt hardcore narcotics and money laundered. That's why he went to jail.

As bad and all as Armstrong is - "setting a bad example" doesn't come close to "dealing f***ing heroin".

People maybe need to catch a grip and get a bit of perspective.

Armstrong cheated, relentlessly, in a sports event. he lied on oath. He bullied witnesses on what was then a civil trial. He probably bribed too. He's a sh!t. I hope Armstrong does time for perjury. I'd have a good laugh if they got some fraud to stick too.

He's a nasty, unpleasant man. But he's not unique, and he's not the devil. Hell, he's probably not even particular unique as a doper; there were any number. He's just a c***.

Montgomery dealt f***ing poison for kids. Different f***ing ballpark of moral obscenity.

And as for damage to society. Perhaps if fans stopped looking for moral guidance from a f***ing athlete, and accepted the athletes only job is to compete, clean.

you want moral guidance, go to a synagogue, not a bike race.

Me, I'd be happy with cleaner sport. I leave the moral instruction for the professionals at the weekend.

I am aware of Montgomery's crime but from what I understood he only dealt a couple of times whilst being desperate for cash, it might have been more serous but he was no head of the mafia. Ask Keith a Richards if a dose of Heroin is a death sentence. It's apples and oranges anyway.

I don't think your post will change the fact that millions of kids right now are looking at their favourite athletes as role models, as noble as it was.

That's really wishful thinking.

The most he's looking at is first time offender time for obstructing justice, or something like that. But the feds haven't even moved on that front. Looks like they are putting all their eggs in the civil enforcement basket. Still . . . time will tell.

Yah, you are probably right.

First time offender. White collar crime.

Who cares?

I mean do you really believe that they would put somebody like Lance in jail?

I mean, he is like the Martha Stewart of professional sport.

Dave.

Lying under oath. They have it on film.....

Armstrong lied to the courts and the judicial system did nothing. Zero. The American judicial system is Armstrong's b!tch.

Armstrong's legal squad shows the American judicial system for what it is: given enough money, there are few laws that apply.

It sounds nice - LAs big well paid legal team keeps him out of jail, but the fact remains very few people get done for perjury.

More importantly, LA did not lie in Court - it was an arbitration which is now back in play because of his lying.

This discussion reminds me of an earlier discussion. . .and there was even a grand jury that time!

I think Lance may have done kids a favor. Why would we want out kids living in the fantasy? It was good for the 2nd grade.

Now kids want a college degree. I'm not upset about that. And they cycle because they love it. And I'm not upset about that.

Each professional rider had their own choice to make and it appears to me, most the very top chose to use drugs to win. That is not something I blame Lance for.

On Lance being a criminal/jail. I don't care so much. He should be prosecuted in-line with what others that do the same are.

So lying about PEDs should carry a bigger penalty than lying about having sex with an intern? I say disbar him!

Well this is a cycling forum, full of fanboys and obsessed haters. Lance Armstrong is basically the devil to a lot of folks, even though it really boils down to a guy lying about cheating in a cheaters sport, and making a few people butthurt ("destroying" people's lives...LOL!).

Who lied about having sex with an intern? You need to brush up on the definition of the word "is" :)

Regardless, Lance lied in support of the multi-million dollar fraud he was committing. That is worse than having sex. And if you disagree, I've got a bridge in Manhattan I'd be willing to sell to you.... ;)

^^That ain't no Ben Foster. That's Lance... i think..

I thought that myself at first sight but if you look closely it's Ben Foster.

The picture has been widely reported as that. As you can see from the link I posted above David Millar is helping out with it. Studio Canal are working on the movie and they tweeted about it. Millar also tweeted a link to the picture.

Well below is an original - from the stage to Sestriere:

The only major difference is LA was using Nike mitts while in the movie they appear to be USPS mitts - that and the shorts appear slightly different, but its a really good likeness.

Assuming this would be a USA court.
Specifically:
What crime can he be convicted of?

I am not an attorney, but try to use CSI kind of speak. "Ruining lives" does not count.
If the wider spectrum of activities he has been alleged to have participated in are true, potential charges could include fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, drug smuggling, unlawful possession of pharmaceuticals, distributing pharmaceuticals without a prescription, practicing medicine without a license, conspiring to commit all the above, tax evasion, perjury, suborning perjury, witness tampering and RICO.

The script used by the Lance apologists claims that there is no more physical evidence that Pharmstrong committed many of these crimes than there is that he doped, and all that remains is hearsay. Which is a deliberate attempt on their part to taint eye-witness testimony as hearsay. Many's the criminal who has been convicted entirely on the basis of eye-witness testimony and in absence of "physical" evidence.

I'd be p!ssed off too if someone had my livelihood destroyed, slandered my name in the media, had their fans send intimidating messages, offered money for proof of me doping etc etc.

Some people say, 'hey it's been such a long time, why doesn't Lemond forgive Lance?' - and that sounds terrific, nice and might show Lemond to be the bigger person but:

there is also the argument as to why should he? Given that he destroyed his life and finances for a significant period of time and that it is in fact normal for a person to keep holding a grudge in these circumstances and indeed if he did decide to extend an olive branch of forgiveness to Lance in the hope of perhaps some form of reconciliation with him, how would he know that Lance would be sincere in accepting it if he indeed did choose to accept it?

Also, there is the argument that Lemond doesn't want to give Lance the satisfaction of believing that he has had the final 'win' in this regard in that LeMond was the one to initiate the act of forgiveness and reconcilliation and not Lance himself.

Play on Greg
