There are allegations and rumors that he took opioid painkillers. I couldn't find a reputable source to substantiate those, however. But IF it's true (big if) one can do a lot of damage to oneself if your natural pain response is blocked by drugs.

Doping didn't end with Lance Armstrong. Scott Mercier on NewsTalk.

He explained why he thinks the UCI have not been hard enough, saying "I think we need to reach a point where everyone is held accountable."

He added that based on what has been coming out recently, "doping did not end with Lance Armstrong" and that he is disheartened by the way money continues to talk and prevent real change in cycling.

DID THE PUNISHMENT for what Tiger did exceed the crime? As someone with some experience along those lines, I'd say it did. What happened was, the media changed. Somewhere between the end of Michael Jordan's career in 2003 and Tiger's scandal in 2009, the media stopped being compliant to athletes and celebrities. They no longer protected them, because they no longer needed them. In the digital world, all that matters is the scoop. The mainstream media is right there with the TMZs and Deadspins, because they can't afford to be beaten. The upshot is that there are no more sacred cows out there, and a lot more harshness. If John Kennedy and Frank Sinatra were alive and conducting their lives the way they did in their primes, they'd be devoured.

NEXT MONTH I'm playing Augusta National for the first time. I've been invited by the former president of Nike, Charlie Denson. Lanny Wadkins is coming, too. Two of Lance Armstrong's longtime business associates have agreed to pay $500,000 to the United States government as part of a conditional settlement in a lawsuit filed by former Armstrong teammate Floyd Landis.

Capital Sports was just a bit player, receiving just a small fraction of the overall cash as a fee. The big money flowed to Lance.

Mathematically:

1/(small fraction)*$500k = very large number

That small amount in light of the fraud would indeed only make sense if it came with a testimony of sorts. Especially since it's written they "agreed" to pay these amounts so someone (the lawyers of the US Government?) would have had to make that offer and $500k doesn't sound like it's worth anyone's time given what's at stake.

The government is sitting with a full boat, and Armstrong is drawing dead. Notice that there is nothing suggesting that Stapleton and Knaggs settled with a stipulation that they admitted to no wrongdoing...that isn't there for a reason.
