To quote hrotha on the first stage, Tour de Fukushima this upcoming July. Valverde disappointed a few months after that comment suffering through the cold and rainy Tour of 2014 when he had all the chances in the world of grabbing stages and podium. Pretty sure he won't this year...

Pretty sure he said he had family problems during that Tour and had zero motivation.

Also said he had the same problems all year 2013.

at this rate Valverde to win 5 TdFs in a row...............

And he'd still be younger than Vuelta Moto-Horner

I like Valverde as he is the anti-new-generation-Vaughters detox Kool-Aid. Too much of JV then just take a sip of icey-cool Valverde in a can and you know the old generation is alive and still kicking

In a few years Dawg will start to decline, a good chance for Valverde to win Le Tour.

Maybe he already started. We can only know retroactively

The new marginal gains are going to be front wings to provide enough downforce to combat the kind of oversteer Piti suffered at the last hairpin today. Had to lift off the gas for a long time to steer safely up the mountain.

Missing F1?
:p
I woke this morning to find a lot of other people missing F1, apparently, as the footage of that freewheeling around the final switchback is doing the rounds now.

I don't see anything that screams motor doping in that footage, seen similar things by riders on steeper grades going through corners over the years and more than one occasion actually braking. I doubt they were motor doping, I say watching Valverde do what he did is down to good old jet fueled doping

Will ASO want a TeamSky scandal at this years TdF? maybe not and Movistar gets the nod and Valverde gets his TdF win.

Looks to me like the great training effect from riding at the sharp end of three GTs in one season, is reaping its rewards for Valverde this spring. That, along with pretty weak opposition, seems the most logical explanation for his great results.

I struggle to believe his doping has radically changed - he's in his late 30s and was already at an insane level before this season, consistently winning big races - why mess around with the program that he had?

Wow, Valverde has a secret that the peloton would give anything to know what it is...

FFS, he's the best rider in the world right now!
Best rider right now? Hes been nº1 UCI for four or five years, I dont remember well. This man has been in the elite of cycling since he passed to profesionals.

And even before that he was crushing everyone. He just doesn't know how to do anything else

Meh, having the most points in a season does not mean they're the best rider in the world. It just means they gathered the most points.

Being the "best" means winning races, which is what he's doing now more than he ever has at this point in the season (I think..). He has nine wins already (twelve if you include points and mountains competitions) and it's only the beginning of April? Holy ***! This is not a joke!

Good post, I have the same feelings. I also struggle to understand if people think he's like the only one doping, or the objection is that it's still working at his age? He's always been a class rider, whatever level he's been at. Doesn't surprise that he's still going well. I'm not a big fan of Valverde in any way, but I struggle to find him objectionable in a peloton where far more absurd and unlikely riders seem to do well.

Agree the level in general is not the highest we've seen in recent decades.

You mean the great effect of many years of heavy doping abuse. Doping has a long term effect. He should have been banned permanently, like all the rest, including Contador.

Maybe the peloton is cleaner, but some renegades like Valverde refuse to back down on the doping abuse.

He only won the WT ranking twice.

Pretty obvious he isn't doing something out of the ordinary. He just has 1%, maybe 2% more than he has had in previous years and the luck necessary to pull it off. Pretty much only facing Contador in these stages races and he is past his prime (still a mighty fine one week rider but still). Also has a lot better of a program than what he has had the last many years - finally he is racing these races. Las year, only T-A when the mountain was cancelled.

Its too easy to say he has found a wonder drug and call him a fraud..
