At the 2015 IAAF World Championships, van Niekerk won the 400 metres gold medal in a time of 43.48 seconds, which at the time was the sixth fastest in history. When the race was over he collapsed on the track, supposedly with exhaustion ?, and was then taken to hospital. Although he later recovered, I,ve have always thought that perhaps it was a reaction to something he may of had in his system. The new world record time of 43.03 is mind boggling. He shaved 0.45 seconds of his personal best and 0.15 seconds of Michael Johnson's WR of 43.18, which had stood for 17 years.
I've collapsed with exhaustion before, with nothing weird in my system. OK, not collapsed, but thrown up and felt very bad.

I don't know if this has been asked before, but I'd find it very interesting to hear which sports at this Olympics people believe are PED-free. Not counting beta-blockers or anything purely designed to calm the competitors.

The list is depressingly short. Looking at the sports I only see four that I would have confidence in being clean: archery, sailing, shooting, and table tennis (maybe fencing as a fifth).

There was a discussion about fencing and shooting upthread (and by extension archery). Apparently beta blockers can have a significant effect on your nerve and your heart rate, and even recreational substances like cocaine and speed could help. Table tennis I'm pretty sure uses PEDs. Sailing is an interesting one; at the Olympic level, I'd hedge my bets but say it was probably clean. Yacht races like the America's Cup, however, are actually incredibly physical - to an extent often underrated. I would be amazed if PEDs weren't used in it.

When I was trying to think of likely PED free sports I hadn't considered sailing. I would guess rhythmic gymnastics as the scoring seems to be weighted heavily on the ability to be in the right place at the right time. But having said that, someone got popped for doping in boccia so who knows maybe no sport is safe. http://www.usada.org/u-s-boccia-athlete-anwar-accepts-public-warning-for-anti-doping-rule-violation/

For the layman - is the disadvantage of lane 8 just because the runner has no reference point?

That's pretty much the reason given for lane 8 being a disadvantage

Yes, I think that is a small handicap. It gives a tactical advantage to the runners in the middle who can gauge their effort. But with the wide sweeping turns, it is far preferable to lane 1 IMO. However, the main reason that people in lane 8 have never won in modern times is that you get that lane if you don't win your semifinal heat. Historically, the gold medal favorites can typically win the semi and still coast in ~45s. The USA have swept the medal stand in this race in the past, so parity has increased substantially in the rest of the world. The 4 x 400 might be one of the most exciting races on the track.

Coburn has been among the top American women for a number of years now, but a medal at the Olympics? Beating all the Ethiopians and all but one Kenyan (who beat her by a half second)? And the winner is Kenyan by birth, so I suppose she was beaten by the Kenyans, but since we now know that the Kenyans are more than suspicious, and Coburn ran with them the whole way....I don't know...Did she switch to the Salazar group as well?

Really?

Aren't you like in your early 20's. I think every current record will be broken by the Dubai olympics.

Koch's 400m?
FloJo's 100m & 200m?

Darren Campbell on BBC Radio's 5 live this lunch time predicting FloJo's 200m record will go in the final - track super fast - see Van Nieckerk's time, felt Bolt would have run something silly without a botched start. I got the impression that he thought Thompson would double up and be the one to beat the time.

Wonder if the organizers, IOC and IAAF intentionally made it fast or has it always been fast?

3 WR in 3.5 days of athletics. Clearly banishing Russia is working out in cleaning up the sport.

Your seeing it all wrong. Tainted records from the past set by dirty doping cheaters from the east are being replaced with new clean records by clean athletes from the drug free west.

yes, that's what makes sense. Doping is supposed to give athletes a competitive disadvantage. Russians are just stupid.

Seems like the women's hammer slipped under the radar here. Wlodarczyk broke the WR again with a throw that's inside the top 200 of all time regardless of gender. Wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being further than the winning distance in the men's competition, let alone around 6m clear of everyone else in the women's event. Knowing how dodgy throwing events usually are, surely that can't possibly be right

I just can't trust anything I see in athletics any more. Even without the Russians, the middle and long distance events are being dominated by Kenyans, Ethiopians and other athletes with dodgy links like Farah, and the Jamaicans are still bossing the shorter distances. At least the men's 400m hurdles is wide open now that Bett and Tinsley are gone

For the record the mens hammer weighs considerably more than the womens hammer.

Ah. That explains everything. Thank you.

[Crosspost from Russia thread] And it's unclear exactly what is happening but now the only Russian allowed in track and field (long jumper Klishina) seems to have been banned from competing by the IAAF and is appealing to CAS. Seems to be new evidence related to McLaren Report..

Klishina reinstated by CAS!

http://www.tas-cas.org/fileadmin/user_upload/Media_Release__English__Klishina_final.pdf

The CAS Panel applied the IAAF
Competition Rules to conclude that the previous decision of the IAAF DRB, that the Athlete complied with the relevant criteria because of her permanent residence outside Russia, still applied despite the additional information provided by Prof. McLaren. Relevantly, the Athlete established that she was subject to fully compliant drug-testing in- and out-of-competition outside of Russia for the “relevant period”.

Hopefully we get more details about what the McLaren info actually is (supposedly evidence of sample tampering & two different DNA samples in one sample).

Strange. Good for tv and viewers though I guess..

Ah, fair enough. But even so, all the other leading throws are nowhere near. She's the only woman ever to throw over 80m, and she's now thrown 2m beyond that. She has the top 6 throws of all time. She's absolutely light years ahead of the competition - known dopers are well behind. To someone who doesn't really follow it closely, it smells absolutely rancid

What can the Americans actually win, though? They've won 2 field events and from what I know, they have a chance to win 2 or 3 more - Taylor will probably win the men's triple jump, Eaton should win the decathlon, and maybe the women's long jump; not really sure about the rest. But on the track, they're looking at Felix in the 400m, the relays and not much else. This may be a disappointing games for them in terms of athletics
