Except for the fact that he won Vuelta and Tour stages? The green jersey? He's always there in AGR and G-W? Pais Vasco sprints? T-A sprints? Paris-Tours. Yeah, he's a one race rider all right

The guy is old and had a lot of injuries throughout his career, but are you really going to hold that against him? Besides, he's not a pure sprinter, he could top ten in LBL.

He never did.

I never stated he did, I said he could do it. He was 11th once, that shows you can do a top 10.

If I said he did it I would have said "he has done" instead of "he could"

He rode it most years in a long career and never finished in the top 10. 11th is not top 10.

I guess you could find a few people who might not should have been there.

Valverde might have been banned. Rebbellin would test p just 3 months later and Frank might should have been banned.

Dekkers in there too.

It's pretty darn close, hence he could have done a top 10 with a bit more luck on his side. How many sprinters do you know that could potentially top 10 in LBL? Would you be surprised if you saw Oscar Freire coming in tenth? I would not. Hence he could have done a top 10.

Thomas Dekker's results got scrapped. So that would indeed promote Oscar Freire to a tenth place. Thanks for reminding me about that, so actually he did top 10 :p

We can also ignore PFANNBERGER Christian and Rebellin, so that would promote him to 8th. Valverde probably shouldn't have been there, but you can't blame him for the bad handling of Operacion Puerto, so he won that race. He already got punished anyway, so it would be unfair to not see him as the winner.

Otherwise Andy Schleck would win his second LBL

I think the criticism people have of armstrong was his ignorance to the other grand tours. Likewise its the same with andy schleck.

I remember bernard hinault once saying if merckx done what armstrong done he would of won 20 tours.

Well, Leipheimer isn't much better in that department. He rode the Vuelta twice, once when he was young and unknown to the world and the second time in 2008 because he wasn't invited to the Tour. He rode the Giro twice, once in 2008 because he did not get an invite to the Tour and once in 2009: Armstrong was there as well. I think they decided to ride both editions that year because both the Giro and Tour were "easy" that year and Armstrong needed the kms in his legs after his long retirement anyway.

If you're going to criticize Armstrong, please do the same with Leipheimer. And I actually kinda like Leipheimer and am one of the few on this forum to defend when he wins. When he won in Suisse I think it was only me and Hitch who weren't upset with it.

Great logic. Can I ask you to apply the same logic to this result and let us know who won?

Interesting thread. Funny byplay between ElPistolero and Hitch!

I would have thought that Menchov rides various GT's and more than one in many seasons? Like this year he was top ten in Giro and Vuelta, a good achievement.

I think that in recent times Sastre was the best in regards to competitiveness at numerous GT's - usually at least 2 a season he would do well in.

Maybe it is easier for the specialist TT's to be on peak or close to it, then the climbers. Cancerella (though maybe more pre 2011) and Martin appear to ride to a high standard for most of the season.

Most GC riders can only peak for one GT a season. Whereas it is a little easier for the sprinters. Cav could be the most regular on peak rider out of everyone.

Kloden is as guilty as anyone for a major TDF focus. Only rode Giro and Vuelta in '08 when Tour wasn't an option and has picked up the occasional stage race win along the way, more as preparation for July than anything else.

Vino seems to have peaked a lot in his career - more than a one race rider.

What about Mosquera? Doesn't he only focus on the Vuelta (and only race in Spain)?

As for Armstrong, he usually had good results in Dauphne or Swiss before TDF, so not really a one race rider. And just on that, it seemed more possible then for a rider to have good form in June and then still have that in July. Is that just clinic related or something else?

Mosquera focused on whatever races he was invited to. Which wasnt a lot before and is significantly less now:p.

In 2010 it was Catalunya, Pais Vasco, Castilla y Leon, Communidad Madrid, Bayern Rundfahrt, Asturias, Burgos and La Vuelt a Espana.

He top 5'd in 5 out of the 8.

Hey! Where's our Classics fans? :(

Tom Boonen, only concentrates on Flanders and Roubaix. At this point in his career it wouldn't hurt to win a few other races he hasn't won and those mid week semi-classics are not what I'm talking about.

How does he only concentrate on flanders and roubaix. He has won 6 tour stages, the green jersey, 2 vuelta stages and the world championships. On top of that he has won ghent wevelgem twice and E3 four times.

Boonen has an impressive palmares and is a lot more open to the cycling calender than many other riders.
Lets not forget 2nd places at MSR and Paris Tours.

Come on, you both know that anything other than Flanders or Roubaix and his season is pretty much bad no matter how many Tour stages or other races he might win or 2nd in. Those other races are to only make up or add on to his season climax.

Are we going to ignore Cancellara's time trial capabilities now and call him a one race day rider(Paris-Roubaix and the Ronde)?

If it's not Oscar Freire, please tell me which of the sprinters is best suited to this category.

I think Freire is a lazy cyclist who is satisfied with one big win per year, not more, and that's usually MSR or Worlds. So it's a little different to my OP but I think that's the best fit for the sprinter riders.

Answering my own question with a few ust for starters..>>

Ivan Basso - Tour or Giro
Menchov - one GT per year
VDB2 - Tour
Gadret - Giro

And ones I am thinking about:

Sam Sanchez - Tour of Basque & Tour de France
Igor Anton - Vuelta

-Basso competes in Lombardy
-Mehchov competes in other weeklong stage races
-Gadret races a full season of cyclo-cross along with his road racing
-Samu does the Ardennes as does Anton, who has done the Giro and the Vuelta in the same season, in addition to other week long stage races

Just to clarify, this is the type of rider I was takling about:

Ohgmyod Hitch & Pistolero your back and forth has been hiiiiiiiiiiiilarious!!

Hitch - thanks for clarification on Scarponi. Agree.

Levi is definitely not a one race rider.

Another question; since we've been talking a lot about sprinters n the forums. I'd say OSCAR FREIRE would be the biggest one race rider of the sprints category- MSR and Worlds.

Didn't he win a Tour green jersey within the past 4 years, along with Paris-Tours? I think sprinters would be the most difficult to accuse of being one-race riders just by the nature of their discipline. They have to be ready to contend for the win in any flat/flattish stage/event that they enter.
