Totally off topic, but possibly pertinent: I learnt a few weeks ago that 1200 people a year die in police custody in SA. 1200 per year! In custody! That is crazy!

I wonder how many are white?

Did you see the footage of the Mozambiquen taxi driver who was bashed by black police over parking illegally? Handcuffed to the back of a police van only to be dragged backwards whilst the vehicle moved? For good measure a cop slammed the door in his unprotected face. Died in custody a few hours later. Other inmates said he was horribly bashed at the police precinct.

Was big news two weeks ago. This doesn't surprise me in South Africa. The stories coming out of there are horrible. Think of that Indian couple who are GB citizens who went to SA in 2011. Honeymoon there, wife is kidnapped and murdered. The husband is another Pistorius.

Didn't see the taxi footage, but I remember the faux murder of the tourist.

Sketchy country...

I wonder if she was able to send any texts from the bathroom...

I have this deep down feeling she was playing WWF and was about to hit a double double word when all of a sudden BANG BANG!

What a great statistic to argue why everyone should get bail in SA! Either that or be issued with a cricket bat pending trial.

When a few days go by with no posts to this thread and I see a new post, I expect to open the thread and find out that Pistol has killed somebody else or himself or somebody involved with the case has killed someone.

Was there not a report of him hiring a PR firm shortly after the murder?

I would think the PR guy was on the job immediately. He seems way more concerned with his career than with shooting his gf.

"Pist-off"-ius keeps coming into my mind :p

he does seem to be a powder keg

Can we please try to keep it on topic (Oscar Pistorius) and not make it a commentary on your opinions of South Africa in general

cheers

This does relate to Oscar. He plans to make a fresh bail application to change his conditions. This statistic underscores why a white guy "hero" with money got bail in the first instance.

Good reference videos.

With the cricket bat I believe that was bad chinese whispers the British and South African press got a hold of. The police confirmed the bat wasn't bloody. At least that is what I last read 2 weeks ago. Pistorius said he used the bat to pry the door open to the toilet after he had shot.

Note this was around the same time certain papers were guessing the layout of the bedroom and getting it wrong. That same paper also had the bat drawn in the picture for dramatic effect.

The thing to note is Pistorius damn well knew that the person was trapped in the toilet stall within the bathroom. He had a gun. Law in South Africa is clear. You can shoot an intruder in your home IF they attack you. Someone locked in a stall is not an immediate threat. He had no legal right to shoot. He have distance and a gun regardless of whether Pistorius had his prosthetic's on or not.

The legal rights on self defense against house intruders was one of the first issues raised in papers. What I read was clear. By his own testimony, he illegally shot a person. Didn't think to ask who they were did he? Didn't warn them he was armed. He just shot. Even if it was an accident, he acted irrationally and without consideration. Hence why I believe his supposed alibi is a lie. It's a quickly put together lie. Truth be told I think he saw her iPad and found messages to other men that were sent as SMS, completely lost the plot (in tune with stories about his rage) and completely went into a hideous rage. Worse. He had guns in the house and a lack of mental restraint that would stop a normal person who was angry from wielding them against another person whom their rage/anger is directed towards. Just like the Shining videos.

IMO he lost it. I've seen people do it unarmed, sure not to that degree, but to the point where another person (me) had to physically intervene or something or someone was going to get beaten or perhaps killed. They're already highly agitated, venting and holding onto their wrath and one thing tips it over. That tipping point is never rational BTW. It's illogical. Chemical imbalance in the perpetrators brain brought on by their cognitive habits (what they think and do daily, monthly and annually aka they made a choice to be like this). I think it was jealous rage that was unleashed after finding a text from another male his insecurity deemed a rival. His story has holes all through it. It fails the common sense test.

Now somebody may excuse him with FEAR. Another psychological imperative that drives people to do and commit bad and negative things. It is also irrational. I don't buy it here. As I said, he had the person his testimony states was THOUGHT TO BE AN INTRUDER, cornered and locked in a toilet stall. They were not going to get out of the house if he backed away and got his legs other than thru a window. Anyone see the pictures of his dogs? Massive cross bred monsters who would tear chunks out of anyone who jumped into his back yard. Did he give a warning? Nope. Had all the power and control and fired. Not once, but four times. So IMO fear goes out the door as well. He wasn't afraid.

That's about what it looks like to me, too. This case looks to be about degree of guilt. Proving premeditation might be a challenge, but it sure looks like an unpremeditated murder case is very strong.

killing people something might be wrong

no shame might be offensive

he might be able to write a book like OJ did.

Funny you should say that, blackcat.

That's EXACTLY how I've been describing this case to my friends. I'm certain he'll get off, and I'm also certain that OJ style justice will be abundantly evident...

(Caveat: Certain for me <> certain for others - not going to get into an argument about it all)

He is bound to get off BETTER than OJ.
Look at him, he's a WHITE double amputee that made the Olympics.

He is closer in personality to Lance though, so there is a glimpse of hope.

Tarnishing what is left of the name and image of Hansie Cronje. :D

Figures that would be the case. When South Africans sportsmen fall, they fall hard.

One of the unintended consequences of the Boston bombing is that a few very decent runners are likely to be on blades in a few years. I would love it if one of them won the Boston Marathon in the future, not just because it would be a great triumph over disaster, but because it would provide further evidence that Pistorius is really just a somewhat above average runner who has received an enormous advantage from technology. This could be an interesting experiment.

Edit: Actually, I don't know if any of the runners in the race were among the amputees. But if any were, I would be very interested to see how they do with prosthetics.

I suppose that's one way to describe a plane crash.

I realised after I posted the additional ideas that can be gleaned from my comment. Did not mean it that way. Meant metaphorical, not literal as in 'falling from grace.'

am bumping this thread because I see his name in the news again.

Evidently there are awful and bloody photos from the scene that are on the internet...I am not even going to post the link nor did I look at them...

if you're interested it was on google news..prolly a million other places.

But if I remember correctly it seemed that June was the date for some sort of hearing..trial..or whatever he will be going through?
