I think Tola had this once he got the gap. Was constantly looking back and not committing fully, but still stayed in front of them.

Let's see who attacks first from the chasers.

Bekele 39th. Glad the great man finished.

Kipchoge is great too, but Bekele easily had his measure on the track and cross country. Lot of recency bias with those who consider Kipchoge greater.

Their first meeting in a major championship (if not overall) was the Paris World Championship in 2003, the 5000m, Possibly the greatest distance race of all time, with Kichoge winning, El Guerrouj 2nd and Bekele 3rd. They were on world record pace for the first half or so, but slowed it down and when it was El G taking over with just over 2 laps to go, the pace was exceptional. The final lap was epic.

Lanterne Rouge once did an analysis video of that final, but he‘s sadly deleted all his old unlicensed videos.

Finally a gold medal for Ethiopia after a few disappointing performances in the track events.

Ethiopia has had some strange tactics in virtually all their track events. They would have 2, even 3 runners leading the pack, then slow down, lose the lead, and then be in bad positions to respond to the inevitable bursts in the latter stages of races. Really weird. That said, Kenya hasn’t exactly tire things up either. Neither has Jamaica in the sprints. 3 traditional power houses in track have not had a super Olympics.

A great race indeed, and performance from Kipchoge. Bare in mind that El Guerrouj and Bekele were both attempting doubles (first ever sub 27 in a major championship), whilst Kipchoge was fresh. The following year El Guerrouj got the better of them both to win the olympics (when both Hicham and Kenenisa were again going for their second gold medals of the championships). After those olympics El Guerrouj retired and Bekele pretty much dominated the 5 and 10 for the rest of the decade.

If they were using the Dodger Stadium or the Rose Bowl instead of the Memorial Coliseum, then they would have a lot of hills right by the stadium to use. Hell, Fargo Street would be a possibility, probably at about 2/3 distance if they finish at the Memorial Coliseum I think?

Plenty of possibilities in the Elysian Heights or maybe up and down by Griffith Observatory?
Nah, we both know that Fargo steet and the like, alongside a finish near the Dodger Stadium belong into the cyling RR.

I would also rate Bekele higher overall and there’s a good case he could’ve been superior at the marathon if he focused on it earlier, but respect to Kipchoge for what he’s done.

Gold for the home team in men's VB!

I'm assuming that the 'behavior' police were not watching since there are no posts about all of the cheering, gesticulating, etc.

When it comes to combined boulder/lead event, though, it's hard to imagine someone can top her these days. One of the most dominant athletes around IMO.
she actually looked surprisingly not-dominant today, but apparently injured her finger during bouldering. That probably played a part.

Agree. Or maybe that's how high the standard one expect from her, we expected her just to streamroll the competition, and today she didn't. Didn't make a complete set at boulder, also Mori and Pilz bettered her at lead. And still came out with 12.5 points lead in the end.
