Probably the only gold medal Saint Lucia will win for a while, congrats to Alfred! Definitely didn't see that coming, will be a heck of a party in Saint Lucia tonight.

That was a demolition job by Alfred, but Richardson looked like a nervous wreck before the start.
Still, Alfred already bossed the semifinal, ran a great time despite the rain and I really like her cold demeanour before the start. It's a breath of fresh air that makes her stand out.

First medal for them ever, one of the very few countries with more nobel prize winners than Olympic medal winners...

Richardson looked genuinely nervous coming in, like I've never seen her before. She's always been so cocksure, but it made you feel like, unlike Lyles, there's a bit of hamming it up, because she showed vulnerability that she doesn't usually display. Winning domestically or in DLs is nothing like this pressure and the Worlds came from an outside lane after scraping through qualification, whereas here the expectation, nay, given the pre-event hype, DEMAND, was for her to win, and it looks like it got to her in a way I really didn't expect of her.

Desperately upset for Marie-Josée though, and if that jeopardises the 200m for her too it is a really sad way for her to limp out of the sport.

I thought she'd be all flashy being these are the Olympics, but what she wore (or how she wore it) and her makeup looked unusually subdued. Hm, this isn't the Sha'Carri I'm used to seeing.

Probably true. She definitely had a horrible start.

I hope she can get revenge in the 200 meter.

Meanwhile a pretty great battle between Titmus and Ledecky!

Pretty great way for Bol to redeem herself from this from last year:

Decathletes about to finish up their toiling in the upcoming 1500m - some of them are good runners, some are not, but it could probably be said they are all pretty tired after two days of grueling competition.

Femke Bol you beauty, wtf was that?!?
That was awesome, is what it was. After she got the baton she was running so calmly I thought maybe she was running just to secure any medal but maybe given up the win. But it was just the way she and other 400H athletes have to run in even measured strides around the track to make sure their steps are right approaching the hurdles.

Two questions:

1) Why do some of them change outfit from the semi-final to the final?

2) What had Terry done to her legs before the semi-final and why was it gone for the final?

After the women's 4x4 at Budapest I thought gold was still in play as soon as Haydock-Wilson couldn't make a clear gap on the Belgian and Dutch athletes on their leg. Bol's closing speed is phenomenal and her running so relaxed so while she has had moments like the Mixed 4x4 last year, so you never EXPECT her to pull out something like that, it remained possible. It was a fabulous moment and given that McLaughlin coming back to the hurdles means she may not get her own personal gold, at least she has a gold medal out of this so a bit of pressure comes off the individual races for her.

I am so looking forward to that hurdles event.

The Danish commentator said that she had been timed at about 0.3 seconds slower than the world record on a flat 400 meter on her race tonight. Of course with a flying start but still an insane level.

It's incredible how slow the slowest decathletes look on the 1500 meter, yet they still run at pace 3:10 or something like that...
