MvdP was attacking through a gap, when Philipsen swerved right and closed the gap.

MvdP had nowhere to go.
I thought VDP too a huge risk trying to go through a huge gap on the cobbles and someone else paid the price. Sagan tribute move I guess.

I've never, in this situation, seen a solo rider be brought back in Roubaix
This is how most bike races nowadays are decided. Whoever makes the solo attack that causes hesitation behind wins. MvdP has really tried to make the race and has looked the strongest though.

Philipsen being in front on cobble section is not opposed to orientate backwards in all directions.
Though I'm very keen of Degenkolb, I'd say it was his own fault, being behind MvDP and looking forward.
Ok that's maybe a bit hard. I'd call it a 'racing indicent'.
