PS is going to start Rio XCO Olympic race (according to Slovak Cycling Union). Michal Lami will go as his 1st substitute and M. Haring will take part in the road race. So I guess, UCI didn't grant Slovakia the wild card (intended for Sagan) - which is weird as it would be great marketing bump for MTB. Wonder which country they went with - rumor is: Russia :(

I confirm. It's all over Slovak media.

And Sagan will not start in the road race.

I was wondering why is Peter's FB profile fed up with pictures of him training on mountain bike. Well, OK, it might be fun, but in the same time he might be completely sinking his chances in Tour's green jersey competition. I'd rather see him having strong TdF then one day with uncertain results in Rio.

Not seeing the connection. He will be strong at TdF. And he will have 4 weeks to seriously prepare from MTB after the Tour. Don't think he plans to compromise his TdF preparation the events are not immediately after each other.

Olympic road race without rainbow jersey. Silly. Nevermind this is the best confirmation that profile is really hard otherwice Sagan would go for it. To tell the truth I thought the race profile was not so bed and if ridden defensivly he had a chance. Lets see how he can handle the preparation befor the Tour and after the Tour.

I'm really surprised he won't even participate in the road race. A victory would be unrealistic, but not at all impossible.

I mean, the 2008 olympics was way too hard for Cancellara on paper, but he still ended up with a medal.

well... but then there are things like marketing, showbiz and he's quite interested in these things too - a showman. he would have been invisible in RR but this xco thing - it's gonna make some noise for sure.

So Sagan decides he wants to ride the dirt and Lami and Haring are basically told to stick it? Pretty unfair if you ask me.
Haring owns the spot and he has got his compensation. Paid vacation in olympic willage as our rider for road race. Probably he is glad that he does not have to participate and finish one round behind. Who knows? It is Peter who risks a lot. Besides the broken collar bones he is risking the shame oh his life. He will be under microscope watch and he cannot afford not to finish in top ten. When I heard it first time I was pretty pissed he is nor riding the RR but now I am fascinated with his balls.

Yes, I'm sure most athletes would be glad they don't need to compete in the most important event and the one they've spent years building up for because someone who doesn't need that opportunity can take it from them on a whim.
Well but if they are still not good enough even after that  Definitely very frustrating for them but not everyone could be another Sagan :D
p.s.I am sure he will be happy even cleaning Sagan bike after race

lol i cant forget in previous olympics one of slovakian "athletes",long jumper or somesuch, failed to register a single valid jump because she claimed that she was distracted by audience in the stadium

the point is id much rather see sagan trying for a solid result, possibly even a medal than to see below average **** who has less than zero chance to register anything and vacationing in brazil for two weeks,f*** that

It could easily be decision beyond Sagan control. Probably people from Specialized with very precise excel table of road bicycle sales of last last 12 months think that with podium or even top 10 on Olympic XCO race they can boost they sale of mountain bikes considerably. Even for them is very rare opportunity. Who knows. Who cars.
I just wonder why UCI did not want to give the wild card to him. Who could race both and they could profit from it as well.

Why is the sport Haring's, Lami is the national champion isn't he? I thought that would automatically qualify him for the sport.

Saying an athlete would be glad not to participate at the Olympics in the sport they have dedicated their lives to is ridiculous I'm afraid. They travel all over the world to get lapped in the XCO World Cup so I'm very sure they would want to go to the Olympics.

Sagan obviously has way more star potential than any other and the coverage would be through the roof. It would be fascinating to see one of us telling Sagan that he can't go in the shoes of the Slovakian jury or whoever decides these things

Honestly I think it'll hardly even give a percent bump to ratings. Sagan is famous among cycling fans only, he doesn't transcend the sport and he isn't going to attract many more viewers to the mountain biking than would probably already be watching. In mountain biking Schurter, Albason, Kulhavy etc. are big enough names. Unless he comes in and medals, which seems highly unlikely, just look how well Van Der Poel has done, I doubt they'll even be an article on it outside of the cycling press.

Boohoo, this is sport not socialism. If the team thinks it can get a better result with Sagan, then that's that. It's not a right to go to the OG, so if he wasn't good enough to secure himself that he got the spot, no biggie.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care much and I have no idea how the Slovakian federation chooses its athletes, it just seems silly. Mathieu Van Der Poel, the guy who was meant to go into XC and tear the competition apart has been rubbish and I would expect his training and abilities are much more suited to XC than Sagans are at the moment.

Boost Specialized MTB bike sales? Specialized have Jaroslav Kulhavy, current Olympic champion on their bikes. I don't think Sagan riding them would have much of an effect if any at all.

As for podium or even top 10? Look how well Van Der Poel has done.

Exactly, this is just sport. You know, if not for Lami and Haring, Slovakia wouldn't even have that spot in MTB race. Anway, worst outcome is for Lami as it appears. He should ride MTB race end ended with empty hands.
Maybe they've received gave some compensation, who knows, like proposal you refuse :) Or compensation even is the feeling that you did something good for someone struggling.

:) nothing against Kulhavy, he is great rider a fun to watch, but his popularity and his contribution to sale potential of bikes are way behind Sagan ones.

It looks like you and Kokoso were right regarding the Lami and Haring spot and he is probably pissed a lot then, unless he has got his compensation as well :).

You never miss the chance to kick to Sagan, don´t you. Sometimes I am not sure who hates Sagan more LS or you.
