I think most viewers don't realise what actually happens during the commentary with Phil and Paul. First they are in a booth with a smallish monitor or two - not a large widescreen TV that most of have these days. They also have either written notes or laptops containing info about the riders and Paul has the handbook that explains the the areas the race is passing through; the castles and churches etc.

They are also commentating to several different TV channels at the same time; UK, USA and Australia are the ones I know about. These channels go to commercial breaks at different times so they need to match their commentary to the various breaks. This is why you may hear one of them give a round-up and the inflection in his voice would indicate that there is a commercial break coming up but after a short pause the commentary continues because it was another station that left, not the one you may have been watching. They then have to keep an ear open for when that station returns and you may hear them repeating something they have just said for the benefit of viewers to the TV station that has just returned. At the same time they are listening to race radio in French. I suspect that they also tailor their remarks to suit the countries they broadcast to, giving perhaps a little more prominence to the "home" riders.

Here in the UK we tend to hear more of Paul than Phil for long stretches because they maybe providing different commentaries to different channels at the same time. It's not surprising they get in a muddle sometimes and miss the odd incident. I've listened to the Eurosport commentators and find them all very irritating. Phil and Paul may not always get things right but I am often amazed by the way they can keep their commentary going - even when there is not much happening on the road.

@Celeste
Good that you provided some balance. I think as long as our poking fun is in good humour ('don't have to listen to those two clowns' is not good humour) then it's fair.

It was definitely a red kite (on account of it being red and not having any black bits :) ).

No, I recall them saying black kites don't hunt carrion. I think they got this one right. At least that is what I took away from the comment.

I think the `punchline' was that the riders would be safe because black kites are not hunters.

Paul yesterday was talking about nicknames, and said one rider in the past had been called the `Eagle of the Mountains', I think he meant `Eagle of Toledo' Federico Bahamontes.

Later Paul noted that the riders were taking their rain jackets off, he said this was so they didn't overheat, fair enough, but then went on to say that overheating leads to the bonk, never heard that before.

Personally I don't mind the two of them, but the totally random remarks seem to be increasing, perhaps it's time for some fresh blood?

Bonk means a lot of things, perhaps they meant what I thought it meant. :)

No, please keep them, I would miss them terribly, were they to be replaced.

Paul reminds me of commentary in a sports video game, standalone snippets recorded and stitched together according to some algorithm based on what's currently on the screen.

they also said AC's bike fractured in two and that the fracture caused the crash not the other way around. do we have confirmation of this?

If they didnt see the crash how would they know? If they can tell Greipel from Kittel then wtf???

I got so tired today of hearing about JRod's supposed ambitions to win the Tour; how he'd had such a terrible week and now was forced to ride for the KOM jersey. Do these two clowns really not know that he was riding the tour to find form, maybe win a stage and the KOM, with the goal of training for the Vuelta?

They must have made the blatantly wrong point about JRod having an "unexpectedly bad" first week of the tour half a dozen times today. Really grating.

You might not realize that the small monitor view is further hampered by the bottles of wine between P&P and the screen.

P&P whoring themselves out to multiple broadcasters might do wonders for their bank accounts, but does a disservice to viewers in multiple viewing areas rather than just one. In fact, because they are juggling viewership they might be even worse than if they were country solo.

I am just surprised that, because they overuse phrases and ideas, that today they did *not* tell us again and again about how Tony Martin's family escaped East Germany just prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The way Paul kept harping on about it was a bit odd to me, as I liken the story to the analogy of a prisoner escaping from jail right before he gets paroled.

Focusing on narrative rather than facts :D

One of them also said that Kwiatkowski was the best climber in the break today. This was later in the stage, so they already had evidence of a coming-into-form JRod going uphill. They might have misspoken as to what they were trying to convey, but it was still a blatant error that was not corrected.

I was steaming the Tour at work today and hit upon one of the links on Steephill. It was a feed of BeIn Sport's broadcast with...Phil and Paul doing the "pedal-by-pedal". It ran the whole stage with no commercials, and these two were nothing like the wierd bumbling duo on NBC's broadcast(I like them on NBC, and yes they do make mistakes, but I like their voices.)
On BeIn they were crisp, with no mistakes, no repeating of each others points like on NBC(which does annoy me) Anyway not sure where BeIN comes from but just wanted to say I enjoyed the broadcast, while calibrating a few Intra-aortic balloon pumps

Do they jump back and forth between broadcasts or something, while NBC has its 50 commercial breaks?

EDIT--Just read Celeste's post above..interesting how that works with the different broadcasts. Guess when you have been doing this 30 some years, you just are the go to duo.
