People are underestimating the effort of riding 2 consecutive GTs and going for GC in both. For the double Tour-Vuelta just check Evans 2007 (dropped from 2nd to 4th in the last two decisive stages) or Sastre 2008, who was never a threat to you know who. I don't think Froome can compare to Sastre regarding his capabilities to podium in two consecutive GTs.

contador will wipe the floor with froome, what has froome done to prove he is anywhere near a contador or andy in top form on the mountains?

He means best stage racer of this year. If he manages to podium the Vuelta (having been best rider and podiumed the Tour) and be the first rider to podium 2 consecutive gts in the same year since, ummm

Certainatly against 1 Vuelta win and a Tour de San Luis podium.

Good points. Should be a great race. If Froome continues his TT from from this tour and the vuelta, I'd put my money on him by a reasonable margin following ACs lay-off although I appreciate he is no Schleck against the clock.

I bet you 200 squid right here right now that Contador will beat Froome.

Seriously? When was the last time Contador lost 40 seconds to a GC contender in ANY TT, never mind one with a cat 3 climb?

I know you've been keeping your expectations low because of whatever reasons, but that's like saying Cavendish will beat Contador on the Angliru. :p

Alberto has shown enough in the TT versus Evans, Wiggins, Cancellara and others in the past that he is no slouch.

No I mean he won't lose very much time, if he is in great form he will lose a couple of secs and if he is in not so good form 1 sec per km = 40 secs.

Yep. I think its unlikely that Froome will even finish 2nd which half of the forum seems to think it is a minimum. Evans also said last year he was going to do the Vuelta. did he do it? No. Froome is having a great tour, giving it all and it is likely he will want to rest after it. If not, then he will not be on form, simple as.

Sky won't have nearly as strong a team around him at the Vuelta as he and Wiggins do for the Tour. Even if the squad is the exact same (with a replacement for Sivtsov), Rogers and Porte will be quite tired and likely not up to the task of grinding away.

Saxo probably won't have a super strong team, either, but the level of attack of Contador in Spain relative to Evans or Nibali in France is significant.

EDIT: Also, there are going to be more top tier climbers in Spain and far fewer TT kms, which will work to Froome's disadvantage somewhat. I am particularly interested in what that young rider from Movistar (Quintana?) can do in the mountains in a GT.

Three reasons why, if he rides and is leader, Froome will win:

1) He has a major point to prove after being the best all rounder in both the Tour and last years Vuelta, but was shackled with team orders.

2) Contadors going from no racing to a hard GT. He can prepare all he wants but his lack of racing is a factor.

3) Froome will hand AC his backside in the TT, as will Sky do to Saxo Bank.

4) Contador won't be able to have any 'food supplements'

Congrats on starting to follow cycling this year.

He beat everyone except Evans last year at the Tour in a completely flat TT while completely out of form. You are seriously underestimating Contador if you think he'll lose time to GC guys in a hilly TT, Froome is no Big Mig.

Why would I underestimate Alberto

Froome is a great time trialist, Alberto is "just" good.

*snickers* Of course, he was out of form.

Seriously: Everybody should be glad if there was just any competition at the Vuelta. We have seen how boring a GT may get when a three-week-contender takes on a bunch of 7-day and classics-riders in the 2008 Giro (the one Scarponi won ;-) ). So everybody should be glad for any battle at the Vuelta between serious contenders. If AC comes out and wins such a battle at the end- It would be fine with me. If not: Even better (cCycling surely does not need this certain guy).

However I doubt that Froome will be close to his Tour-form at the Vuelta. Same for Andy Schleck who apparently will not be able to ride it in proper form...

Froome wont win with a long le tour in his legs. As for Contador, why is everybody assuming he's going to jump on his bike and ride away with the race? I'm going to go out and a limb and say he almost certainly wont win the Vuelta. On his day Contador is almost untouchable but he's not invincible, he's only human and he's had a long stint away from the sharp end so it's silly of the fanboys to act as if he's won it already.

They should just have a no holds barred Froome Conti mountain-fest. No testing, no worries about who is more "prepared" (that's all I am going to say on that subject), just let them have at it and attack attack attack.

It would just be interesting to see these 2 climbers/TT riders go at it :)

Let's just see what Froomey can do when Senor Stake and Andy attack in the mountains, before we get our expectations up because he outclimbed Evans.....
