Caleb Ewan should definitely be among the favorites in the U23 race. I haven't been following him that closely this year, but he's been climbing quite well, right?

Dylan Teuns has been very impressive lately, showing some promising stuff in Tour of Britain and GP Wallonie, but I must admit that I don't know that much about him.

Ruben Zepuntke was strong in Alberta, but how does he get over hills? The same goes for Mike Teunissen - can he climb?

One rider that hasn't been mentioned yet and who definitely deserves to be mentioned amongst the favorites is this year's perhaps most impressive U23 rider, Magnus Cort. He climbs well and is fast. The route should be pretty good for him.

Also, what type of rider is Ilya Davidenok? He has had quite a season as well.

I would add Eddie Dunbar to that list, He is in amazing form at the moment. I know im Irish and probably a little bit biased but he has a very strong team all commited to him this year. He definately wont be far away.

Dunbar is a junior,he races 1 day later.

Davidenok is a power sprinter/puncheur.
Teuns is a better climber than Cort Nielsen, but is climbing really the deciding factor on this course? Geelong also had some hills, even steeper than what we have in Ponferrada, yet all RR's were sprints.

Mathieu van der Poel has got to be the big favourite for the U23 race, if he's in any type of shape. In the Tour d'Alsace he was in the same group as Power in the queen stage over the Grand Ballon and won a hilly stage and in the Tour of Belgium he was countering attacks by the likes of Greg van Avermaet in the Ardennes. I can't see him getting dropped by anybody on these rather weak hills in this course. He's also proven to have an excellent sprint this year even getting good results with the pro's.

Off course guys like Robert Power are very strong and explosive and sprinters like Ewan can get over a hill, so it's not a given that Mathieu will win, but he should be the favourite I guess. I don't see who's going to ride away from him on the hills and even in a sprint after a hard race Mathieu should still be one of the favourites.

Im really looking forward to the U23 race, will be some great racing and a lot of names who can win this. For me Teuns is the favourite, he has the backing of a strong squad and he has been very impressive in his last races.

But so many strong contenders who could win: Ewan, Power, Cort, Kung, Meintjes, Kudus, Godoy, Van Der Poel, Teunissen, Lopez, Gavira, Latour, Boudat, Geogeghan Hart, Kirsch, Eiking, Enger, Foliforov, Rybalkin, Herklotz, Buchmann, Almost the whole Italian squad (no idea who will lead them), Grosu, Pibernik, Carpenter, Putt (and probably forgetting some.

My top 5 prediction
1 Teuns
2 Van der Poel
3 Ewan
4 Cort
5 Zurlo

Mike teunissen can do well in short climbs or he is only good in the cobbles and the flat? I ask this because he won a minor classic last week, I read that he was in the breakway all day and despite that he won in the sprint again riders like coen vermeelfort.

You read that well and it's true. He attacked a few times, was in the break and when they all got reeled in he still beat them in the bunchsprint.
Problem I also don't know if he can take on these hills.

No-one from Spain? Who would be the leader for the team riding for a home crowd?

Teuns? This course does not favoruite him at all, and it's made for Benoot. That said, Teuns will go on attacks I guess, whereas Benoot can follow wheels. Not sure how you could have missed Benoot from that list considering he's been one of the most impressive this year and crucially he's a puncheur with a lethal sprint, but is exactly perfect for this course.

Ewan, at this point, is vastly over-rated. He may develop into a front-liner but that is far from a dead certainty. His performances at Comm Games and Ride London clearly showed he isn't nearly strong enough nor have the legs to mix it with the big boys .... and he'll need to develop considerably before being able to do so.

Even in this race, he will be mixing it with guys who ARE currently matching it with seniors at Pro Conti level and are therefore at least one stage of development ahead of him. Those expecting results from him next year at OGE may be wise to reconsider.

He has 0 wins this year. He'll be alright, but winning is something else.

I'm wondering if Luca Chirico can deliver the surprise. Normally i would say no, but you never know. But the last weaks, he's not riding to well.

People look at the guy with the most eye-catching results and immediately place him on top. What kind of rider is Teuns? A sort of semi-climber and allrounder, I guess. Can he sprint? Is he good at one day races? Is he explosive? Nobody knows, we've hardly seen him.

Ewan mostly just seems to be rather small (literally) to mix it up with the big boys. I don't know of any classics riders his size... Gerrans is closest but even he is considerably taller.

He's quite allround. His speciality are the hills. He's a guy for Amstel, Liege, Canadian races. He can climb relatively well, but he's not a pure climber at all.

And he's quite fast too. Don't know really with who i can compare him. Perhaps Slagter?

Like Van Avermaet maybe?

Benoot has said in Belgium media he will ride in support of Teuns, who in my opinion is very suited to this course, more then Benoot who needs a little harder route. Although it isnt till after this race we have a better view on how difficult the course is.

Ah I forgot about the Spaniards probably missed some more, I havent seen a startlist yet. The Spanish team isnt the strongest though, they were also disappointing in Avenir and I expect the selection will be similar. This is their home race though so they will probably have some extra motivation and be a bit better but I cannot see anyone for the win in the U23 category.

Benoot needs a harder route? I think Teuns has a bigger engine than him atm. I also think Belgium should protect De Buyst for a possible sprint.

Teuns was 2nd in both the Omloop U23 and Liege U23... so it's a bit early to say, don't you think? Apart from the fact that these U23 races don't really say anything at all about their future career.

That second part of your answer couldn't be better;)

With the pro's, speciality becomes even more important. And he's got the most talent for the hilly classic, that's for sure.
