Why do some think the mechanical was fake?

He always has difficulty to stay with the peleton on the bunch sprint. After he puncture, he just needs to finish the stage to have the same time as the winner.

There were only 45 riders in the first group who got the same time, so he could very well have been behind the split(s) if not for the mechanical.

Doesn't sound like there's much to go on, in whether it was faked or not, except for assumptions. Might have been faked, might not have, I don't care that much either way.

Probability of a flat 100 meters after the 5km banner vs. probability of a rider abusing the rules to gain an advantage. If you had to bet money on one or the other, which would you choose?

In my book, all cheating is equal, whether it's doping, cutting the course, or faking a mechanical. In my local races, officials check to make sure you actually have a flat before giving you a free lap. It's sad the rules are better enforced for amateurs than at the top level of the sport.

It's far more likely that he actually punctured before the 5 km banner but kept going until they crossed it.

What PED can give Pozzovivo an equal ability to Cancellara ? on one day....corticosteroids ?

we don't really know cancellara's true ability, do we, or pozzovivo's for that matter.

although they're almost of the same age, cancellara belongs to the old 'brown envelope' generation, whilst pozzovivo started racing in 2008(?) so he's techinacally part of the new clean viz. micro-dose-bandwidth-doping generation.

not sure what I'm suggesting here, by the way.
just saying cycling's a mess where current performances unfortunately can't be judged for what they are.

Pozzovivo became a pro in 2005. Was also top U23 rider in 2004.

Speaking of envelopes, he tried to buy the 2004 U23 WC when he was away together with Sioutsou. Sioutsou was not impressed and simply attacked away from him.

Attempting to buy races is never a good sign, like puncturing just within the limit.

Is it really much better than 2012?

Depends if you believe Evans, Quintana and others didn't care about his attack or just couldn't follow imho.

In 2012 they clearly let him go.
