it really is a shame that team like that is even allowed to exist in civilized world

Team like what? They didn't even started

started with what? torturing people who don't obey/agree with you. well... sure they already started
hope they got booed during whole season. and don't even start with "don't mix sport and politics" - it's *******t once the team is owned by a dictator, abuser and torturer.

Bahrain and his leader are no different to any other gulf country, yet I didn't mention you were bother with World Championships in Qatar, or with races in Emirates and Oman

Are Russian (Tinkoff, Katusha), Kasakhstan (Astana) or Chinese (new Lampre) teams much better? I don't think so. Also ruled by semi-dictators. You have to accept that the sport are financed by questionable people.

It's hard to name one ethnical team. News Corp and Orica aren't angels either.

Re: Re:

Well it all depends on where we ethically draw the line isn't it, there isn't a person walking the earth who hasn't done something bad before, but there is a difference in the levels of badness. If I am to punch someone in the face, that doesn't then mean I can't then criticise another for murdering someone. The difference between, people who like you guys are saying are are dodgy (I include Murdoch in that) and the kind of crimes the Bahrain government are committing is the difference between holding your tongue and saying enough is enough. Accepting it and brushing it off as "it is what it is" just lets the ceiling become the floor, where then do we draw the line.

He's sold his soul for a payday, I've heard 'yeah it's not for you to criticise how a man provides for his children', when he is helping legitimize evil it is, it's my business and yours, and I doubt the guy is living hand to mouth as is.

Why should Baharin hire Purito for the likeable factor? What's wrong with Nibali and co?

Purito never won a GT, he´s liked because he lost those, because he´s an attacker, because of his surname, oh purito here purito there, oh the cigar! super!

he never overdid it (clinic). see how many fans hail him, they immediately forgot about the Bahrain Khalifa, if they ever cared...

i'm not looking for angels here or there. but straight out dictators and torturers are something completely different.
i'm also boycotting the WCH in Russia 2018.
i do have my principles and i'm staying by them or at least i try to as hard as i can.

Still the question if he will ride though. He says the team purely signed him because of his WT-points, and he doesn't need to ride in '17.

But most sources say he has to ride for his new team, otherwise the contract is invalid.

I personally think he will continue till Liege. One last try. But if not, he will not ride at all and getting in the technical staff immediately.

Most sources are wrong. Only requirement is a contract, at least minimum wage, insurance and racing team equipment. Otherwise, what if he gets injured on January 1st and is out for 1 year?

I also think that he'll target a few important one day races, he wants to go out on his terms, that's why he was so mad about the fact that he was forced to race Lombardia and Milano-Torino when he wasn't in shape.

"After taking my time to think, and trying to come back to a working routine, I realised it is not possible for me. That's why I have taken, with the help of my family and friends, the decision of not coming back to the competition.
I would like to say thank you to all those supporters that pushed me to come back; I am honoured and you really made my decision a difficult one, but I believe it's better not to come back if I am not sure of being able to do it at the top level.

Of course, a big thank you also to the team Baharain -Merida. They believed in me, they gave me all the facilities for a return, but I realised, speaking with them, that I am not prepared physically, and mentally, for a come back at 100%. I prefer to say this now, before the start of the new season, because the riders are the protagonists. They deserve the attention.

I will work in the future for the team Baharain-Merida, trying to help and trasmit all my experience to the young riders in the team. It is a big challenge, thank you.
I hope I can continue as proud as I am with my 17 years of cycling career in my new role. Having that special feeling I have with cycling and cycling fans.
And as I said when I said good bye in the past Tour the France, Thank you to cycling, you are, and always will be, the best thing that happened in my life.

Thank you everyone
Joaquin Purito Rodriguez"

glad that he won't be racing for that shady team. on the other hand though, weren't his points crucial for their WT license?

yes, he got hired for those points. kind of rules-bending but the fans love him.
he´ll stay at Bahrain-Merida anyway, coach/ds role I think.

If you already have retired in your head, your legs have retired too. Logical decision.

Of course he was signed by Bahrain for his WT-points. But also because he will play an important role in the team the next couple of years, in terms of coaching young riders. I understand why he 'hired' himself for his points. As long as the UCI gives the space to act like that, it's totally understandable imo.

Anyway: thanks for all the great memories Purito! Will be strange to watch cycling without you from now on. But for the past 10 years, it was a splendid experience. Gracias Campeón!

Just sitting here alone and reminiscing on how great of a rider Purito was. I had completely lost the interest in cycling after the Tour in 2012, but the battle between Purito, Valverde and Contador had that Vuelta was epic despite its flaws. Purito should have won 2 GTs that year but ended up with 0. :(

I really miss him in the peloton, for sure he wasn't the most attacking rider, but an insanely great one trick pony with a lot of charm. I'll still wait for the rider who could beat Purito on a proper murito in peak shape.

The sad part about browsing through these old posts is to see all the regulars that are no longer, or very rarely participating in these conversations.

Unfortunately, over the last few years, there were a few fanboy mods/admins that would ban other users just because they did not agree with their opinion.
