Shame as it was not that long ago he was a 40 year old rider that destroyed Nibs in the Vuelta. Doped or not, that is Fu&&ing some achievement and its a disgrace that he never got a real chance to have another go at a GT.

No, it shouldn't!

Logically, the organizers cant risk inviting a team of one aging star + bunch of no name kids.

Obviously, if Horner was unable to ride ToC for whatever reason, there is no replacement so we cant blame the organizers for choosing other teams that are already tested.

He will have to show strong riding in early US races like San Dimas and Redlands in order to receive invite to Utah and Colorado and perhaps next year, if he is still around, ToC organizers may invite him back.

Most of the US based conti teams would do those so I dont see any reason why he shouldnt. San Dimas uphill TT is suited for him as well. Horner is regular on local group rides so I dont think he will have any problems with doing those races either.

And literally at no time before that was he a considered a GT candidate by his team (or anyone else who followed cycling) until his miraculous 2011/2012 season. So I'd be very careful about casting aspersions on others.

Pretty big statement by the TOC. Leaving out Horner's team is a very clear statement they don't want him in the race, & in terms of why, that's pretty obviously a statement that he's 'undesirable.'

I understand why Horner is blacklisted in the CNF trendy cycling sphere. He is from north america and has good results. That alone makes him the most reviled rider since Ryder Hesjedal.

What I don't get is why teams and race organizers have blacklisted him under the supposed reason of doping when there are so many unclean and past cheaters that get invites to the events and get to join these same teams.

Too bad, but really, who cares about the Tour of California? This is one of the biggest soft ball races out there. International riders show up for the vacation mode. Despite the state containing epic after epic roads, they continue to set up boring courses that favor neutralizing finishes for the finishing city contracts instead of making a challenging course.

No joke. The farther they get from Sonoma and Napa counties the worse the courses get. The problem was Cav and others whined a lot about the harsh conditions on those stages and quit coming.

Not always... There was the freak May snowstorm a few years back (2011?) that required they cut the Tahoe/Nevada City stage (or was it two?), and shorten the stage to Sacramento.

Totally agree though, ToC has a lot of unused potential.

Well what can you expect when you build your rider interest on the fun vacation factor rather than the epic racing and results that actually mean something. Heck even when they planned to come to the mountains of Lake Tahoe (cancelled cause of weather) they never even planned an epic summit finish.

With the ToC directly overlapping the Giro there they will have a hard time getting me to watch this in addition to the Giro until the course improves from a rolling parade to a race.

Sadly there are amazing roads all over the state that are being neglected because they can't find a finishing city they find "adequate". IMO the race has been going on way too long for this modality of course design. At some point you need to make the course more about the race than the corporate parade and if you can't rationalize doing this it is an indicator that the race will ultimately fail.
